This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of frictional contact problems in axisymmetric bodies using the rigid-plastic finite element method. A contact finite element method, based on a penalty function, are derived from variational formulations. The contact boundary condition between two deformable bodies is prescribed by the proposed algorithm. The program which can handle frictional contact problem is developed by using pre-existing rigid-plastic finite element code. Some examples used in this paper illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulations and algorithms. Efforts focus on the deformation patterns, contact force, and velocity gradient through the various simulations.

Effects of frictional laws on finite element solutions in metal forming were investigated in this paper. A rigid-viscoplastic finite element formulation was given with emphasis on the frictional laws. The Coulomb friction and the constant shear friction laws were compared through finite element analyses of compression of rings and cylinders with different aspect ratios, ring-gear forging, multi-stage cold extrusion and hot strip rolling under the isothermal condition. It has been shown that two laws may yield quite different results when the aspect ratio of a process and the fractional contact region are large.
In the case of axisymmetric thermal analysis of drum brakes, the distribution of frictional heat produced on the interface and temperature difference between mating frictional faces are very interesting problems to computational researchers. In this paper, heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled by using a thin interface element, so artificial division of the generated frictional heat between pad and drum is not necessary. Temperature difference between mating frictional faces is successfully modeled by using the interface element. The influence of some parameters on tile thermal stress was checked. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.

In the case of axisymmetric thermal analysis of drum brakes, the distribution of frictional heat produced on the interface and temperature difference between mating frictional faces are very interesting problems to computational researchers. In the first part, the influence of the s-cam load angles and elastic modulus of the pad on the contact pressure distribution between pad and drum was checked by a three dimensional model. In the second part heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled by using a thin interface element, so artificial division of the generated frictional heat between pad and drum is not necessary. Temperature difference between mating frictional faces is successfully modeled by using the interface element. The influence of some parameters on the thermal distribution is checked. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.

This paper deals with the dynamic stability of a brake shoe under pulsating frictional forces. A lining part of brake systems is assumed as a distributed spring, and the supported elements of a shoe are assumed as translational springs for a constant distributed frictional force and a pulsating frictional force. Governing equations are derived by the use of the extended Hamilton's principle, and numerical results are calculated by finite element method. The critical distributed frictional force and instability regions were investigated for the change of distributed spring constants and translational spring constants.

The paper presents the dynamic stability of a flexible shoe in drum brake systems subjected to a frictional force. The frictional force between the drum and the shoe is assumed as a distributed frictional force, while the shute is modeled as an elastic beam supported by two translational springs at both ends and elastic foundations. Governing equations of motion are derived by energy expressions, and their numerical results are obtained by employing the finite element method. The critical distributed frictional force and the instability regions are demonstrated by changing the stiffness of two translational springs and elastic foundation parameters. It is also shown that the beam loses its stability by flutter and divergence depending on the stiffness of elastic supports and elastic foundation parameters. Time responses of beams corresponding to their instability types are also demonstrated.

We conduct finite element simulation of a cross-wedge rolling process using AFDEX 3D. The die is realistically modeled with emphasis on the hatched plicate over the slope or forming region. Coulomb frictional law is used to prevent slip between material and die. Constant shear frictional law is also investigated and it is esmphasized that the constant shear frictional law is improper for cross-wedge rolling simulation.
A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of double subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was performed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.

The braking system is one of the most important components in vehicles and machines. It must exert a reliable braking force when they are brought to a halt. Generally, frictional heat is generated by converting kinetic energy into heat energy through friction. As the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy, high temperature heat is generated which affects the mechanical behavior of the braking system. Frictional heat affects the thermal expansion and friction coefficient of the brake system. If the temperature is not controlled, the brake performance will be decreased. Therefore, it is important to predict and control the heat generation of the brake. Various numerical analysis studies have been carried out to predict the frictional heat, but they assumed the existence of boundary conditions in the numerical analysis to simulate the frictional heat, because the simulation of frictional heat is difficult and time consuming. The results were based on the assumption that the frictional heat is different from the actual temperature distribution in a rotating brake system. Therefore, the reliability of the cooling effect or thermal stress using the results of these studies is insufficient. In order to overcome these limitations and establish a simulation procedure to predict the frictional heat, this study directly simulates the frictional heat generation by using a thermal-structure coupling element. In this study, we analyzed the thermo-mechanical behavior of a brake model, in order to investigate the thermal characteristics of brake systems by using the Finite Element method (FEM). This study suggests the necessity to directly simulate the frictional heating and it is hoped that it can provide the necessary information for simulations.
