  • This paper presents a new approach to the problem of designing a cascaded three-parameters controller for a given linear time invariant (LTI) plant in unity feedback system. We consider a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and a first-order controller with the specified overshoot and settling time. This problem is difficult to solve because there may be no analytical solution due to the use of low-order controller. Furthermore, the zeros of controller just appear in the zeros of feedback system. The key idea of our method is to impose a constraint on the controller parameters so that the zeros of resulting controller are distant from the dominant pole of closed-loop system to the left as far as the given interval. Two methods realizing the idea are suggested. We have employed the characteristic ratio assignment (CRA) in order to deal with the time response specifications. It is noted that the proposed methods are accomplished only in parameter space. Several illustrative examples are given.

  • This paper presents a high-precision magnetically levitated (maglev) stage to meet demanding motion specifications in the next-generation precision manufacturing and nanotechnology. Characterization of dynamic behaviors of such a motion stage is a crucial task. In this paper, we address the issues related to the stochastic modeling of the stage including transfer function identification, and noise/disturbance analysis and prediction. Provided are test results on precision dynamics, such as fine settling, effect of optical table oscillation, and position ripple. To deal with the dynamic coupling in the platen, we designed and implemented a multivariable linear quadratic regulator, and performed time-optimal control. We demonstrated how the performance of the current maglev stage can be improved with these analyses and experimental results. The maglev stage operates with positioning noise of 5 nm rms in $\chi$ and y, acceleration capabilities in excess of 2g(20 $m/s^2$), and closed-loop crossover frequency of 100 Hz.

  • This paper presents a tuning-free conditional integration anti-windup strategy for induction machine with Proportional-Integral (PI) type speed controller. The on/off condition of integral action is determined by the frequency domain analysis of machine torque command without a prior knowledge of set-point changes. There are no tuning parameters to be selected by users for anti-windup scheme. In addition, the dynamic performance of the proposed scheme assures a desired tracking response curve with minimal oscillation and settling time even in the change of operating conditions. This algorithm is useful in many high performance induction machine applications not to allow the oscillation and overshoot of speed/torque responses. The main idea can be extended to general applications such as chemical processes and industrial robots.

  • This study presents a genetic algorithm (GA) to design a PID controller systematically for an inchworm operated by piezoelectric actuators. The performance index considering overshoot and settling time is adopted to search an optimal PID gain using GA. The piezoelectric actuator shows nonlinear characteristics including hysteresis and residual displacement. The PID feedback system combined with an integrator is used to improve the ability of tracking the complex input signals and suppressing the steady state error. The PID controller tuned by GA can track the various motion contours effectively. However, the PID controller shows an improper residual vibration under the application of high-frequency square input. The input shaper combined with the feedback system can overcome this limitation of the PID controller.

  • As track density increases, the effects of nonlinearity in pivot bearing of hard disk drive on the servo performance are becoming more important in considering the range of inertia force and the input torque during settling and tracking mode. Recently, an increasing attention is given to more precise experimental observations and modelings of pivot nonlinearity for achieving higher performance of servo control. In this paper, we propose a new model that shows an improved prediction of the pivot nonlinearity than existing preload-plus-two-slope model at matching simulations and experimental results in both time and frequency domains. Experimental measurements are carried out to validate and identify the specific nonlinearity presents in the pivot bearing when its in fine motion. Using the experimental results new model along with the existing one are characterized and compared for relevancies.

  • In this paper, novel analog duty cycle corrector (DCC) with a digital duty error detector is proposed. The digital duty error detector measures the duty error of the clock and converts it into a digital code. This digital code is then used to accurately correct the duty ratio by adaptively steering the charge-pump current. The proposed duty cycle corrector was implemented using an 80nm DRAM process with 1.8V supply voltage. The simulation result shows that the proposed duty cycle corrector improves the settling time up to $70{\sim}80%$ at 500MHz clock frequency for the same duty correction accuracy as the conventional analog DCC.

  • The deadbeat control has many advantage such as the ouput response without a ripple and the fast settling time. This paper presents a deadbeat control system to damp out the sustained low frequency oscillation. The proposed deadbeat control system consists of th integral controller and the state observer, and it is simulated on the one-machine infinite-bus model of a power system. The efficiency of the proposed control system is verified through the several case studies.

  • Conventional P/PI speed controller of today's servo drives should be manually tuned the controller switching set-point by trial-and-errors, which may translate the drive system down-time and loss of productivity. The adjustable drive performance is heavily dependent on the qualify of the expert knowledge and becomes inadequate in applications where the operating conditions change in a wide range, i.e., tracking command, cceleration/deceleration time, and load disturbances. In this paper, the demands on simple controls/setup are discussed for industry servo drives. Analyzing the frequency content of motor torque command, P/PI control mode switching is automatically peformed with some prior knowledge of the mechanical dynamics. The dynamic performance of the proposed scheme assures a desired tracking response curve with minimal oscillation and settling time over the whole operating conditions. For comprehensive comparison of traditional P/PI control scheme, extensive test is carried out on actual servo system.

  • A single chip Programmable AC to DC Power Converter, consisting of wide band gap SiC MOSFET and SiC diodes, has been proposed which converts high frequency ac voltage to a conditioned dc output voltage at user defined given power level. The converter has high conversion efficiency because of negligible reverse recovery current in SiC diode and SiC MOSFET. High frequency operation reduces the need of bigger size inductor. Lead inductors are enough to maintain current continuity. A complete electrical analysis, die area estimation and thermal analysis of the converter has been presented. It has been found that settling time and peak overshoot voltage across the device has reduced significantly when SiC devices are used with respect to Si devices. Reduction in peak overshoot also increases the converter efficiency. The total package substrate dimension of the converter circuit is only $5mm{\times}5mm$. Thermal analysis performed in the paper shows that these devices would be very useful for use as miniaturized power converters for load currents of up to 5-7 amp, keeping the package thermal conductivity limitation in mind. The converter is ideal for voltage requirements for sub-5 V level power supplies for high temperatures and space electronics systems.
