The purpose of this study is to make "The Rainfall Frequency Atlas in Korea" by the analytical method with new hydrological concepts. In this study, all of the rainfall datas in Korea was used for surveying of the basic data, and so we can get 103 sites for annual rainfall data and 100 sites for the max. in a day that are suitable to the purpose of the study. The above data groups are possible to estimate the normal standard period by the moving average method with $\pm$5% of significance level of variance ratio between the max. and min. moving average and arithmetic mean, but it may be impossible to study until 1990's for the short duration under 18-hr because the sites, having the short duration data, are only 12. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The normal standard period estimated by the moving average method is 20 year with $\pm$5% of significance level of variance ratio, and 30 year with$\pm$2-3%. 2. For the annual and max. rainfall in a day, it is possible to make the rainfall frequency atlas with 30normal standard period, but it may be impossible until 1990's for short duration. 3. "Y-k method" developed by writer is best suitable in the rainfal frequency analysis in Korea because of its convenience and reduction in the amount of calculation compared with other methods. 4. To improve the utilization of the rainfall frequency atlas, the larger-sized and the more detailed iso-precipitation atlas must be drawn.atlas must be drawn.
In this study, South Korea is divided into 5 zones and is studied about the analysis of time-regional distribution of previpitation frequency and rainfall intensity in Korea. In the previpitation frequency analysis, the basic data groups of 39 stations were selected. The diagram of previpitation frequency was drawn, and the time-regional distribution of precipitation frequency was analized. In the rainfall intensity analysis, the basic data groups of 36 stations were selected. The probable rainfall, I-D-F curve, and regression equation between 24hr. and 10min.-18hr. areal depth were obtained. The results of this study are following; 1) The precipitation class of max. recurrence probability in every season except summer was commonly (1) 1-5mm, (2) 0.1-1mm, (3) 5-10mm in order. 2) The zone of max. recurrence frequency owing to the precipitation class was zone II in precipitation frequency of below 20mm, zone IV in precipitation frequency of 30-40mm, zone I in precipitation frequency of above 70mm for a year. 3) The recurrence probability of precipitation in Korea can be represented to the equation of exponential function; $$W(x)=e^{\alpha+\beta}$$ 4) The first and third zones were expected heavy rain for the short and long duration. 5) The I.D.F. curves were drawn, and established that the time interval for the least deviation of I.D.F curve is 10~40min., 40min. -4hr., 4~24hr. 6) The regression equations of areal mean depth between 24hr. and 10min.-18hr. for each zone were obtained. 7)The probable rainfall of 36 points were calculated.

This research seeks to derive the design rainfalls through the L-moment with the test of homogeneity, independence and outlier of data on annual maximum daily rainfall in 38 Korean rainfall stations. To select the fit appropriate distribution of annual maximum daily rainfall data according to rainfall stations, applied were Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO) and Generalized Pareto (GPA) probability distributions were applied. and their aptness was judged Dusing an L-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test, the aptitude was judged of applied distributions such as GEV, GLO and GPA. The GEV and GLO distributions were selected as the appropriate distributions. Their parameters were estimated Targetingfrom the observed and simulated annual maximum daily rainfalls and using Monte Carlo techniques, the parameters of GEV and GLO selected as suitable distributions were estimated and. dDesign rainfallss were then derived, using the L-moment. Appropriate design rainfalls were suggested by doing a comparative analysis of design rainfall from the GEV and GLO distributions according to rainfall stations.
This paper is results of analyzing the characteristics of rainfall triggering landslides and geometry of slopes, caused by the heavy rainfall and antecedent precipitation by Typhoons Ewiniar and Bilis at Chuncheon area in Gangwondo around July in 2006. As results of analyzing the characteristics of rainfall, landslides in 131 sites were found to happen due to the heavy rainfall having the maximum intensity of rainfall in an hour during July 15 and antecedent precipitation during July 12 to 14 causing the ground to be weak by increasing the degree of saturation previously. From results of analyzing the geometrical characteristics of 131 slopes where landslides occurred, the slope width were in the range of 6~10m. The average slope length and angle were 46m and $51.8^{\circ}$, which was relatively steep slope, respectively. Landlises occurred in the elevation of 400 - 500 m with the most probable frequency.

This research seeks to derive the design rainfalls through the L-moment with the test of homogeneity, independence and outlier of data on annual maximum daily rainfall at 38 rainfall stations in Korea. To select the appropriate distribution of annual maximum daily rainfall data by the rainfall stations, Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO), Generalized Pareto (GPA), Generalized Normal (GNO) and Pearson Type 3 (PT3) probability distributions were applied and their aptness were judged using an L-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Parameters of appropriate distributions were estimated from the observed and simulated annual maximum daily rainfall using Monte Carlo techniques. Design rainfalls were finally derived by GEV distribution, which was proved to be more appropriate than the other distributions.
This study developed a climate informed Bayesian nonstationary frequency model which allows us to forecast seasonal summer rainfall at Nakdong River. We constructed a 37-year summer rainfall data set from 10 weather stations within Nakdong river basin, and two climate indices from sea surface temperature (SST) and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) were derived through correlation analysis. The selected SST and OLR have been widely acknowledged as a climate driver for summer rainfall. The developed model was applied first to the 2010-year summer rainfall (888.1 mm) in order to assure ourself. We demonstrated model performance by comparing posterior distributions. It was confirmed that the proposed model is able to produce a reasonable forecast. The forecasted value is about 858.2 mm, and the difference between forecast and observation is about 30 mm. As the second case study, 2011-year summer rainfall forecast was made using an observed winter SSTs and an assumed 50% value of OLRs. The forecasted value is 967.7 mm and associated exceedance probability over average summer rainfall 680 mm is 92.9%. In addition, 50-year return period for summer rainfall was projected through the nonstationary frequency model. An exceedance probability over 1,400 mm corresponding to the 50-year return level is about 73.7%.

This study was carried out to investigate the time distribution of single storms and to establish the model of storm patterns in korea. Rainfall recording charts collected from 42 metheorological stations covering the Korean peninsula were analyzed. A single storm was defined as a rain period seperated from preceding and succeeding rainfall by 6 hours and more. Among the defined single storms, 1199 storms exceeding total rainfall of 80 mm were qualified for the study. Storm patterns were cklassified by quartile classification method and the relationship between cummulative percent of rainfalls and cummulative storm time was established for each quartile storm group. Time distribution models for each stations were prepared through the various analytical and inferential procedures. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The percentile frequency of quartile storms for the first to the fourth quartile were 22.0%, 26.5%, 28.9% and 22.6%, respectively. The large variation of percentile frequency was show between the same quartile storms. The advanced type storm pattern was predominant in the west coastal type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with small total rainfalls. 3. The single storms with long storm durations tended to show delayed type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with short storm durations. 4. The percentile time distribution of quartile storms for 42 rin gaging stations was estimated. Large variations were observed between the percentiles of time distributions of different stations. 5. No significant differences were generally found between the time distribution of rainfalls with greater total rainfall and with less total rainfall. This fact suggests that the size of the total rainfall of single storms was not the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 6. Also, no significant difference were found between the time distribution of rainfalls with long duration and with short duration. The fact indicates that the storm duration was no the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 7. In Korea, among all single storms, 39.0% show 80 to 100mm of total rainfall which stands for the mode of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls. The median value of rainfalls for all single storms from the 42 stations was 108mm. The shape of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls showed right skewed features. No significant differences were shown in the shape of distribution histograms for total rainfall of quartile storms. The mode of rainfalls for the advanced type quartile storms was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 39~43% for respective quartiles. For the delayed type quartile storms, the mode was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 36!38%. 8. In Korea, 29% of all single storms show 720 to 1080 minutes of storm durations which was the highest frequency in the frequency distribution of storm durations. The median of the storm duration for all single storms form 42 stations was 1026 minutes. The shape of the frequency distribution was right skewed feature. For the advanced type storms, the higher frequency of occurrence was shown by the single storms with short durations, whereas for the delayed type quartile storms, the higher frequency was shown gy the long duration single storms. 9. The total rainfall of single storms was positively correlated to storm durations in all the stations throughout the nation. This fact was also true for most of the quartile storms. 10. The third order polynomial regression models were established for estimating the time distribution of quartile storms at different stations. The model test by relative error method resulted good agreements between estimated and observed values with the relative error of less than 0.10 in average.

The localized rainfall happens frequently in urban areas recently and then, he drain pipes of urban areas do not drain well when the localized rainfalls happen. Specially, the inundation by the backwater on the lowland should be solved certainly in urban planning and sewer rehabilitation. In this study, it was examined whether the carrying capacities of the drain pipe are satisfied about a current design standard of the rainfall considering the outflows of the urban areas by the rainfall analysis. Also, the backwater in the drain pipe and the inundation on the lowland were analyzed considering the water level of the discharged river and the propriety of the design standard was examined by the analysis about the rainfall frequency. Also, the results offered the basic data to decide whether the detention reservoir should be established and the scale of the pump station.

To account for the influence of heavy storm in Korea by climate change like global warming, the frequency analyses for annual maximum rainfall sequence in 12 rainfall gauge stations are carried out. In order to analyze the temporal change, the rainfall quantile of each station is estimated by the 30-yr data period being moved from 1954 to 1998 with 1-yr lag. Through the analysis for l00-yr rainfall quantile it has been shown that the recent heavy storms increase comparing with storms in the past. From the additional estimating of the rainfall quantile of each station by the 30-yr data period being cumulated from 1954 to 1998 with 1-yr, the change of the probable rainfall by including the heavy storm duration is realized. When the hydraulic structures are determined, it is important to select the data size and necessary to reestimate the flood prevention capacity in existing river systems.ystems.
This study proposes a theoretical methodology for deriving a rainfall intensity-duration- frequency (I-D-F) curve using a simple rectangular pulses Poisson process model. As the I-D-F curve derived by considering the model structure is dependent on the rainfall model parameters estimated using the observed first and second order statistics, it becomes less sensitive to the unusual rainfall events than that derided using the annual maxima rainfall series. This study has been applied to the rainfall data at Seoul and Inchon stations to check its applicability by comparing the two I-D-F carves from the model and the data. The results obtained are as followed. (1) As the duration becomes longer, the overlap probability increases significantly. However, its contribution to the rainfall intensity decreases a little. (2) When considering the overlap of each rainfall event, especially for large duration and return period, we could see obvious increases of rainfall intensity. This result is normal as the rainfall intensity is calculated by considering both the overlap probability and return period. Also, the overlap effect for Seoul station is fecund much higher than that for Inchon station, which is mainly due to the different overlap probabilities calculated using different rainfall model parameter sets. (3) As the rectangular pulses Poisson processes model used in this study cannot consider the clustering characteristics of rainfall, the derived I-D-F curves show less rainfall intensities than those from the annual maxima series. However, overall pattern of both I-D-F curves are found very similar, and the difference is believed to be overcome by use of a rainfall model with the clustering consideration.
