  • In recent years, the amount of sludge ash (SA) has considerably increased due to rapid urbanization and population growth. In addition, its storage in landfills induces environmental pollution and health problems. Therefore, its disposal in an environmentally friendly way has become more important. The main goal of this study is to investigate the reusability of sludge ash as an additive with polypropylene fiber (PF) to stabilize marginal sand based on the compressive strength performances from UCS tests. For this purpose, a series of UCS tests was conducted. Throughout the experimental study, the used inclusion rates were 10, 15, 20 and 30% for sludge ash and 0, 0.5 and 1% for polypropylene fiber by total dry weight of the sand+sludge ash mixture and the prepared samples were cured for 7 and 14 days prior to the testing. Freezing and thawing resistance of the mixture including 10% sludge ash and 0, 0.5 and 1% polypropylene fiber was also examined. On the basis of UCS testing results, it is said that sludge ash inclusion remarkably enhances UCS performance of sand. Moreover, the addition of polypropylene fiber to the admixtures including sand and sludge ash significantly improves their stress-strain characteristics and post-peak strength loss as well as UCS. As a result of this paper, it is suggested that sludge ash be successfully reused with polypropylene fiber for stabilizing sand in soil stabilization applications. It is also believed that the findings of this study will contribute to some environmental concerns such as the disposal problem of sludge ash, recycling, sustainability, environmental pollution, etc. as well as the cost of an engineering project.

  • The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of extracts from Phellodendron amurense was examined. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity of 60% ethanol extracts was determined as 25% and the inhibitory activity of 60% ethanol extracts against melanin biosynthesis in melanoma cell (B16F10) was 31.2%. The purified inhibitory compounds against tyrosinase by Sephadex LH-20, MCI-gel CHP-20 column chromatography from P. amurense was confirmed as obacunone by $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR and Fast atom bombardment (FAB)-Mass spectrum. The tyrosinase inhibitory activities of purified obacunone was respectively as 35.1%. The safety of essence with tyrosinase inhibitory compounds from P. amurense was also assayed by various safety profiles. First, pH and viscosity change of essence for 60 days were not detected. The essence also showed the stability against temperature and light for 60 days. All these findings suggest that extracts from P. amurense has a great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient, which has a potent whitening effect.

  • The sprayable waterproofing membrane is installed between shotcrete to provide crack bridging and hence prevent flow of liquid water as a waterproofing system. Because of its material characteristics, the sprayable membrane can be constructed at more complex structure than sheet membrane. The main component of the sprayable waterproofing membrane is a polymer-based material, therefore, moisture can migrate through sprayable waterproofing membrane materials by capillary and vapor diffusion mechanisms. The moisture transport mechanisms can have an influence on the degree of saturation and may influence the pore pressure and risk of freeze-thaw damage on concrete linings and membrane. In this study, long-term hygrothermal behavior was simulated with considering moisture transport and long-term effects on saturation of tunnel linings. From the simulation, due to water absorption and vapor transport properties of sprayable membrane, change of relative humidity and water content in tunnel lining can be evaluated.

  • To reduce the environmental load of the construction industry, there is a need to minimize construction and demolition by strengthening the eco-friendliness of building materials and extending the durable lifespan. Therefore, while many Hanok roof finishing methods have been proposed to address these problems, the current trend is to use the existing method due to issues such as economic feasibility, weight, and durability. The manufacturing method of clay roof tiles used as roofing materials for Hanok buildings is optimized by using a mixture of 64.5% Gyeongju clay, 15.0% kaolin, 15.0% FNS(Ferro Nickel Slag), and 5.5% MAS(Magnesia Aluminum Silicate) under optimal conditions. The results of the experiment involving firing at 1,125℃ showed that flexural strength of 12,102N, which is higher than the standard of KS F 3510, an absorption rate of 6.08%, a volume specific gravity of 2.15g/cm3, and the freeze-thaw properties were satisfied. A method for securing stable quality was studied.

  • The performance of high-early strength pavement concrete for large areas is influenced by the physical and chemical environment during service life. Generally, penetration, diffusion, and absorption of harmful materials that exist outside the concrete cause damage to its structure. Thus, we have to use a mixture for durability to keep the required quality for the planned service life. Moreover, in using high-early-strength cement and accelerators, a high heat of hydration to create the initial strength can cause cracks. Based on evaluations from optimal mix proportions of high-early-strength pavement concrete for large areas, we conducted water permeability, abrasion resistance, freeze-thaw, plastic, drying, and autogenous shrinkage tests. Test result showed that a mix of accelerator and PVA fibers showed excellent performance.

  • In this study, we tried to develop a coating agent for the fresh-cut fruits used in cakes. First, the coating agent mixing ratios of sugar, pectin, sodium alginate, carrageenan, xanthan gum, vitamin C, and purified water were selected to be 55, 2, 2, 0.04, 0.1, 0.05, and 40.81% (w/w), respectively. In a freeze-thaw stability of the coating agent, the viscosity remained constant for 3 cycles of freezing and thawing repetition process, but showed a slightly decreasing trend in the 4th repetition process (P<0.05). On the other hand, the sugar content, pH, and chromaticity remained constant even in the 4th repetition process. Pineapple coated with the coating agent had smaller weight loss, hardness changes, and total bacteria distribution compared to the uncoated pineapple (P<0.05). In the chromaticity, both of the two pineapples experienced browning with increasing storage duration, as L value decreases and b value increases. However, when the color difference was compared, the progress of browning for the uncoated pineapple was faster than the coated pineapple. Also, the progress of browning at $4^{\circ}C$ was found to be slower than the progress of browning at $25^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the storage stability of the fresh-cut fruits could be improved by coating the fresh-cut fruits for cakes with the coating agent and storing at a low temperature, which would contribute to extending the shelf-life of cakes.

  • CMDS (Coal Mine Drainage Sludge) is mainly generated from acid mine drainage during physicochemical treatment or electrical purification. CMDS is well worth considering on recycling possibilities in various areas. This research applies the liner and cover materials using waste disposal landfill generally to treat acid mine drainage sludge. In this Part I of the two parts paper, physico-chemical characteristics of CMDS, bentonite and cement to prepare the liner have been identified using XRD, XRF, FESEM. In addition, combining their physicochemical characteristics, the optimum mixing ratio has been determined to be 1: 0.5: 0.3 for CMDS: bentonite: cement by the batch tests. Initial permeability of CMDS was $7.10{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$. Through the leaching test, it was confirmed that its mixture was environmentally safe. In the Part 2, a large-scale Lysimeter was used to simulate the effects of the layer on the freeze/thaw for evaluation on field applicability and stability.

  • This study evaluates the physical mechanical properties, durability and sound absorbtion of porous concrete for pavement according to content of silica fume and steel fiber to elicit the presentation of data and the way to enhance its function for the practical field application of porous concrete as a material of pavement. The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of Korea National Housing Corporation as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than 0.6vol.% of steel fiber satisfied the Japan Concrete Institute proposition values. The mixture of silica fume and steel fiber presents the excellent intensity, though. The case when silica fume and steel fiber are used simultaneously presents the strongest durability because the durability shows the similar tendency to the dynamic characteristics. The case when 10wt.% of silica fume and 0.6vol.% of steel fiber are used at the same time shows that the loss rate of mass by Cantabro test became 27% better and freeze-thaw resistance became 60% better. As for the characteristics of sound absorption of porous concrete for pavement, Noise Reduction Coefficient is 0.48 to prove that it possesses almost 50% sound absorption.
