  • Two methods are presented to calculate the natural frequency of an elastic thin circular cylindrical shell vibrating in fluid. Both of them give the natural frequency in analytical expression One is in a simple form and suitable for higher deformation mode of the shell. Another seems to be exact and be used to a case of the shell partially immersed in fluid. When the shell is fully immersed in fluid results show: fur the lower deformation mode of the shell, the surrounding fluid has remarkable effect upon the natural frequency; for the higher mode, the fluid effect becomes small. When the shell is partially immersed in fluid. it does not occur always that the greatest effect take place at the lowest deformation mode.

  • A trigonometric Layerwise higher order shear deformation theory (TLHSDT) is developed and implemented for free vibration and buckling analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates by analytical and finite element formulation. The present model assumes parabolic variation of out-plane stresses through the depth of the plate and also accomplish the zero transverse shear stresses over the surface of the plate. Thus a need of shear correction factor is obviated. The present zigzag model able to meet the transverse shear stress continuity and zigzag form of in-plane displacement continuity at the plate interfaces. Hence, botheration of shear correction coefficient is neglected. In the case of analytical method, the governing differential equation and boundary conditions are obtained from the principle of virtual work. For the finite element formulation, an efficient eight noded $C^0$ continuous isoparametric serendipity element is established and employed to examine the dynamic analysis. Like FSDT, the considered mathematical model possesses similar number of variables and which decides the present models computationally more effective. Several numerical predictions are carried out and results are compared with those of other existing numerical approaches.

  • This paper deals with the application of the numerical differentiation in the structural analyses. Derivative values of the geometry of structure are definitely needed for analysing the structural behavior. In this study, free vibration problems of arches are chosen for verifying the numerical differential technique in the structural analyses. The curvature parameters composed with the derivatives of arch geometry obtained herein are quite agreed with those of analytical method. Also, natural frequencies with curvature parameters obtained by using the forward fifth polynomial method are quite agreed with those in the literature. The numerical differentiation technique can be practically utilized in the structural analyses.

  • A guitar pickup is a transducer that converts string vibration to an electrical signal. The magnetic and piezo pickups are the most commonly used for the respective electric and electroacoustic guitars. The magnetic pickups are prone to magnetic interference between the steel strings and permanent magnets, while the piezo ones are not free from signal inference between the strings. Thus, this paper presents the development of an optical pickup for the electroacoustic guitar. The proposed optical pickup has the top-to-bottom structure. It uses two of Infrared (IR) Light Emitting Diode (LED) and one photodetector. The developed optical pickup is subjected to the evaluation with commonly used piezoelectric pickup. It becomes obvious that SNR with the optical pickup is increased by 45 percent in average, compared with the piezoelectric pickup. It can be concluded that the developed optical pickup has a potential to be applied to the acoustic guitar.

  • A simplified method for the calculation of dynamic characteristics of initially stressed antisymmetric cross-ply laminated shells is presented in this paper using the natural frequencies under unloading state. The equation of motion of laminated shell with two opposite edges simply supported is investigated on the basis of Rayleigh-Ritz method and Mindlin shell theory with effect of the curvature term. The relationships of the non-dimensional natural frequencies with initial stresses the coeffcients of critical buckling and the boundaries of te dynamic principal instability region can be characterized by the non-dimensional natureal frequencies under unloading state. Numerical examples are presented t verify the simplified equations and to illustrate potential applications of the analysis.

  • In this paper, a modified 10-node equivalent solid element(MQM10 element), which has smallest degrees of freedom among 3-dimensional solid elements accounting bending deformation as well as extensional and shear deformations of isotropic plates, is proposed. The proposed MQM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness due to the reduction of degrees of freedom from 20-node element or Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon, the modification equation of Gauss sampling points is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratio. The effectiveness of MQM10 element is tested by applying it to several examples. It is noted that the results of static and free vibration analysis of isotropic plates using MQM10 elements show a good agreement with those using 20-node element.

  • In this work, a simple four-variable trigonometric shear deformation model with undetermined integral terms to consider the influences of transverse shear deformation is applied for the dynamic analysis of anti-symmetric laminated composite and soft core sandwich plates. Unlike the existing higher order theories, the current one contains only four unknowns. The equations of motion are obtained using the principle of virtual work. The analytical solution is determined by solving the eigenvalue problem. The influences of geometric ratio, modular ratio and fibre angle are critically evaluated for different problems of laminated composite and sandwich plates. The eigenfrequencies obtained using the current theory are verified by comparing the results with those of other theories and with the exact elasticity solution, if any.

  • Due to the rapid increase of long-distance transportation, particular attentions have been paid to truck tires, especially to their dynamic characteristics. In this research, experimental modal analysis on two kinds of light-duty truck tires, i.e., radial tire and bias tire, are performed by using GRFP(global rational fraction polynomial) method to investigate differences of the dynamic behavior of the two tires. The test results have shown that the modal frequencies of bias tire are much higher than the corresponding values of radial tire with a similar mode shape, which is in accordance with the fact that the radial rigidity of bias tire is higher than that of radial tire. And most of the modal decay rates of bias tire are larger than those of radial tire within the scope of this experiment. In the frequency domain range of test, the bias tire has extra modes, which do not occur in the radial tire. This difference is based on the fact that the circumferential rigidity of the bias tire is quire low whereas that of radial tire is so high that the frequencies of the corresponding modes are out of the frequency range of test.

  • As for two dimensional added mass coefficients for straight framed hull forms in a free surface of an ideal fluid, theoretical calculations by F.M. Lewis, vertical, K. Wendel, J.H. Hwang, and etc. are available; vertical modes of rectangular and triangle sections by Lewis, vertical, horizontal and torsional models of rectangular and triangle section by Wendel, and systematical calculations for vertical modes of single chine forms by Hwang. In this paper, employing the conformal transformation by which a unit circle and its exterior region can conformally mapped to a polygon and its exterior region, the author calculated two dimensional added inertia coefficients systematically for straight framed sections with single chine in horizontal and torsional modes of vibrations. As the results, it was found that sloping side angle is an important factor measuring the magnitude of two dimensional added inertia coefficient for a set of given values of the sectional area coefficient and the beam-draft ratio. To grasp it cleary in physical sense, pressure distributions are investigated for some typical section contours. The numerical results are presented graphically in the form of two dimensional added sectional area coefficients with beam-draft ratios and sloping side angles as parameters, so that the data may conveniently utilized for estimation of the added inertia coefficients based on a three parameter technique.

  • It is known that tire plays an important role to the dynamic performances of a vehicle such as noise, vibration, ride and handling. Therefore, force and moment measurements have been a part of the traditional tire engineering process. In this paper, a computational analysis technique has been explored. A FE model is made to simulate inflation, vertical load due to the vehicle weight, and the slow rolling of a radial tire. A rigid surface with Coulomb friction is included in the model to simulate the slow rolling contact. The tire slip during the in-plane motion of the rigid surface is calculated. Results are presented for both lateral and vertical loads, as well as straight ahead free rolling. The calculated and measured tire slips are in good correlation.
