An Improved Contention Access Mechanism for FPRP to Increase Throughput

  • Five-phase reservation protocol (FPRP) is a contention-based media access control protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. FPRP uses a five-phase reservation process to establish slot assignments based on time division multiple access. It allows a node to reserve only one slot in an information frame. Once a node has reserved a slot, it will cease contending for other slots. As a result, there may be less contending nodes in the remaining slots, so the time slots in an information frame are not fully used by FPRP. To improve time slot utilization, this paper proposes an improved pseudo-Bayesian algorithm, based on which an improved contention access mechanism for FPRP is proposed, in which nodes are allowed to contend for more than one slot in a reservation frame according to a certain probability/priority. Simulation results indicate that the proposed mechanism performs better than FPRP in time slot utilization and hence the network throughput under various scenarios.

Frame Synchronization for Mobile WiMAX Femtocells Using IEEE802.11 Based Wireless Backhaul (IEEE 802.11 기반의 무선 백홀을 사용하는 Mobile WiMAX 펨토셀을 위한 프레임 동기화 기법)

  • The use of femtocells in buildings and homes has been widely studied as a means to enlarge the cell coverage and increase the network capacity of mobile communication systems. Femtocells for Mobile WiMAX (M-WiMAX) using time division duplexing (TDD) requires frame synchronization with neighboring base stations to avoid interference between uplink and downlink signals. In this paper, we propose a new frame synchronization method for femtocell using IEEE 802.11 based wireless backhaul, which transfers the time information of mobile network to femtocells via the beacon signal provided by IEEE 802.11. Also, in order to reduce timing error of the proposed method, we modify the collision avoidance scheme in the transmitter of IEEE 802.11 and apply a timing estimation technique designed in the sense of least squares to the receiver of IEEE 802.11. Through computer simulations using the proposed scheme, we evaluate the performance of frame synchronization for femtocells and show that the recovered timing information satisfies the timing specification defined by M-WiMAX standard.

  • In this paper, a interpolation error concealment algorithm of motion compensated interpolated frame for motion compensated frame rate conversion to reduce the block artifacts caused by failure of conventional motion estimation based on block matching algorithm is proposed. Experimental results show good performance of the proposed scheme with significant reduction of the block artifacts.

  • This paper proposes a video tracking method for a deformable moving object using an active contour model. In order to decide the convergent directions of the contour points automatically, a new energy function based on a frame difference map and an updating rules of the frame difference map are presented. Experimental results on a set of synthetic and real image sequences showed that the proposed method can fully track a speedy deformable object while extracting the boundary of the object exactly in every frame.

  • 기존 IEEE 802.11 MAC (1)에서는 Fairness를 보장하며 Resource를 제공하는 것을 목표로 동일한 DIFS, Back-off 알고리즘, Source가 같은 경우 동일한 Frame size등을 사용하는 Specification을 작성하여 구현한다. 최근 Home Network과 같은 특수한 Ad-Hoc 환경에서의 이런 Fairness Resource Usage가 오히려 기대 성능을 떨어뜨리는 결과를 가져오고 있다. 이에 802.11 MAC에서 Backward Compatibility를 유지하면서 Prioritized DIFS/Backoff/Frame를 통해 차등화된 서비스를 제공하는 메커니즘을 제안하고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 목표이다.

  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are advanced applications which, without embodying intelligence as such, aim to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management and enable various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks. However, ITS has the different size and shapes according to the city environment policy to adjust the city scene and it has to be displayed by different message on the information display device in real-time. And the information service providers must make the information display system which has the different information and data each time. That is very time and workers consuming and auto message frame generation system is necessary. In this paper, we design and develop the message frame generation system which can set several parameters easily for the generation of the message frame automatically on the windows environment and we do not need to go the field to get the test data.

Improving Encoder Complexity and Coding Method of the Split Information in HEVC (HEVC에서 인코더 계산 복잡도 개선 및 분할 정보 부호화 방법)

  • This paper proposes the coding method to predict the split structure of LCU in the current frame on the basis of the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. HEVC encoder determines split structure according to image characteristics in LCU which is an basic element of CU. The split structure of the current LCU is very similar to the split structure of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. Thus, this paper proposes the method to reduce the encoder computational complexity by predicting split structure of the current LCU on the basis of that of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. And it also proposes the method to reduce the BD-Bitrate by coding after the prediction of the CU split information. The simulation results of changing only encoder showed that the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 21.3%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate increase by the maximum of 0.6%. Also, the method changing encoder, bitstream, and decoder improves the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 22%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate is improved to the maximum of 0.3%. When compared with the conventional method, indicating that the proposed method is superior.

Block-Time of Arrival/Leaving Estimation to Enhance Local Spectrum Sensing under the Practical Traffic of Primary User

  • With a long sensing period, the inter-frame spectrum sensing in IEEE 802.22 standard is vulnerable to the effect of the traffic of the primary user (PU). In this article, we address the two degrading factors that affect the inter-frame sensing performance with respect to the random arrival/leaving of the PU traffic. They are the noise-only samples under the random arrival traffic, and the PU-signal-contained samples under the random leaving traffic. We propose the model in which the intra-frame sensing cooperates with the inter-frame one, and the inter-frame sensing uses the time-of-arrival (ToA), and time-of-leave (ToL) detectors to reduce the two degrading factors in the inter-frame sensing time. These ToA and ToL detectors are used to search for the sample which contains either the ToA or ToL of the PU traffic, respectively, which allows the partial cancelation of the unnecessary samples. At the final stage, the remaining samples are input into a primary user detector, which is based on the energy detection scheme, to determine the status of PU traffic in the inter-frame sensing time. The analysis and the simulation results show that the proposed scheme enhances the spectrum-sensing performance compared to the conventional counter-part.

Extracting Graphics Information for Better Video Compression

  • Cloud gaming services are heavily dependent on the efficiency of real-time video streaming technology owing to the limited bandwidths of wire or wireless networks through which consecutive frame images are delivered to gamers. Video compression algorithms typically take advantage of similarities among video frame images or in a single video frame image. This paper presents a method for computing and extracting both graphics information and an object's boundary from consecutive frame images of a game application. The method will allow video compression algorithms to determine the positions and sizes of similar image blocks, which in turn, will help achieve better video compression ratios. The proposed method can be easily implemented using function call interception, a programmable graphics pipeline, and off-screen rendering. It is implemented using the most widely used Direct3D API and applied to a well-known sample application to verify its feasibility and analyze its performance. The proposed method computes various kinds of graphics information with minimal overhead.

The Political Attitude of Newspapers and the Coverage of Political Scandal (언론의 정치 성향과 프레임: '이해찬 골프'와 '최연희 성추행' 사건의 보도를 중심으로)

  • This study is a comparative analysis of news frames between Chosunilbo and Hankyereh which have shown contrastive political attitude. The coverage of two political scandal, the Prime Minister Lee Haechan's golf happening and an Assemblyman of opposition party Choi Yeonhee's sexual harassment were analysed. The two political scandals were occurred one after the other and had some similarities. But two newspapers showed very contrastive frame on the two political scandals. On the Prime Minister Lee's scandal Chosunilbo showed politicizing frame, lobby golf frame, immorality frame, resignation frame. In contrast Hankyereh used depoliticization frame and human error frame. On the Assemblyman Choi's scandal Hankyereh showed politicizing frame, personal responsibility frame, immorality frame, resignation frame. But Chosunilbo used social responsibility frame and human error frame. In conclusion two newspapers showed very contrastive coverage according to the respective political attitude.
