Alterations of cyclin D1, one of the main regulators of the cell cycle, are known to be involved in various cancers. The CCDN1 G870A polymorphism causes production of a truncated variant with a shorter half-life and thus thought to impact the regulatory effect of CCDN1. The aim of the present study was to contribute to existing results to help to determine the prognostic value of this specific gene variant and evaluate the role of CCDN1 G870A polymorphism in brain cancer susceptibility. A Turkish study group including 99 patients with primary brain tumors and 155 healthy controls were examined. Genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The CCDN1 genotype frequencies in meningioma, glioma and control cases were not significantly different (p>0.05). No significant association was detected according to clinical parameters or tumor characteristics; however, a higher frequency of AG genotype was recorded within patients with astrocytic or oligoastrocytic tumors. A significant association between AG genotype and gliobilastoma multiforme (GBM) was recorded within the patients with glial tumors (p value=0.048 OR: 1.87 CI% 1.010-3.463). According to tumor characteristics, no statistically significant difference was detected within astrocytic, oligoasltrocytic tumors and oligodentrioglias. However, patients with astrocytic astrocytic or oligoastrocytic tumors showed a higher frequency of AG genotype (50%) when compared to those with oligodendrioglial tumors (27.3%). Our results indicate a possible relation between GBM formation and CCDN1 genotype.
A genetic polymorphism study on butyrophilin gene was carried out to explore variability of this gene and to estimate effects of such variability on milk quality traits in crossbred cattle. Polymorphism was unraveled by conducting Hae III PCR-RFLP of this gene. Three genotypes such as AA, BB and AB and two alleles namely A and B were observed in crossbred population. The frequencies of genotypes and alleles were 0.78, 0.17 and 0.04 for AA, AB and BB genotypes, respectively, and 0.87 and 0.13 for A and B alleles, respectively. The nucleotides, which have been substituted from allele A to B, were observed as C to G ($71^{st}$ nucleotide), C to T ($86^{th}$ nucleotide), A to T ($217^{th}$ nucleotide), G to A ($258^{th}$ nucleotide), A to C ($371^{st}$ nucleotide) and C to T ($377^{th}$ nucleotide). The nucleotide substitutions at $71^{st}$, $86^{th}$ and $377^{th}$ position of the fragment were found as silent mutations whereas nucleotide changes at $217^{th}$, $258^{th}$ and $371^{st}$ positions were detected as substitution of amino acid lysine with arginine, valine with isoleucine, and leucine with proline from allele A to B. The genotypes had significant effects ($p{\leq}0.05$) on total milk solid%, fat%, SNF%, while showing nonsignificant impact on total protein%. AA genotype produced highest average yield for all the traits.

The drill bit, which directly transmits percussive forces and torque to the rock, is the core part of a rock drilling machine. For effective drilling, the button arrangement of a drill bit should be optimized because it is the most important design factor in determining drilling efficiency. Furthermore, a quantitative method is necessary to evaluate the button arrangement for the optimization of the drill bit button. Therefore, we propose a new method for the evaluation of the drill bit button arrangement using new evaluation indices, which include the overlapped impact area, blank area, and moment. Moreover, we verify the suitability of the proposed evaluation method by applying it to the conventional button arrangement.
Background: The nematode species belonging to genus Anisakis occur at their third larval stage in numerous marine teleost fish species worldwide and known to cause accidental human infection through the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish or squids. They may also draw the attention of consumers because of the visual impact of both alive and dead worms. Therefore, the information on their geographical distribution and clear species identification is important for epidemiological survey and further prevention of human infection. Results: For identification of anisakid nematodes species isolated from largehead hairtail (Trichiurus japonicus), polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA were conducted. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 gene was also sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. From the largehead hairtail (n = 9), 1259 nematodes were isolated in total. Most of the nematodes were found encapsulated throughout the viscera (56.2 %, 708/1259) or moving freely in the body cavity (41.5 %, 523/1259), and only 0.3 % (4/1259) was found in the muscles. By PCR-RFLP, three different nematode species were identified. Anisakis pegreffii was the most dominantly found (98.7 %, 1243/1259) from the largehead hairtail, occupying 98.7 % (699/708) of the nematodes in the mesenteries and 98.1 % (513/523) in the body cavity. Hybrid genotype (Anisakis simplex ${\times}$ A. pegreffii) occupied 0.5 %, and Hysterothylacium sp. occupied 0.2 % of the nematodes isolated in this study. Conclusions: The largehead hairtail may not significantly contribute accidental human infection of anisakid nematode third stage larvae because most of the nematodes were found from the viscera or body cavity, which are not consumed raw. But, a high prevalence of anisakid nematode larvae in the largehead hairtail is still in concern because they may raise food safety problems to consumers. Immediate evisceration or freezing of fish after catch will be necessary before consumption.
The mechanism of enzymatic hydrolysis of raw corn starch by the purified glucoamylase and a - amylase in an agitated bead reaction system was studied by investigating the changes of sugar profiles produced by each enzyme, the granular structure of raw corn starch, the amount of enzyme adsorption on residual starch, and the amylose content in residual raw starch. The sugar profiles produced by the action of exo-type glucoamylase or endo-type $\alpha$ -amylase in an agitated bead system were not recognizably differed with those produced in reaction system without bead. Without enzyme the intergenic microcrystalline structure of starch granule was not changed by the simple mechanical impact of solid media, but it was cleaved. However, starch granule was fragment into large number of small particles by the synergistic action of enzyme and attrition-milling media, identified to be the major saccharification enhancing mechanism along with the increased amount of enzyme adsorption. The amylose content decreased more readily in an agitated bead reaction system, especially by $\alpha$ -amylase.

Pseudomonas fluorescens pc78 is an effective biocontrol agent for soil-borne fungal diseases. We previously constructed a P43-gfp tagged biocontrol bacteria P. fluorescens pc78-48 to investigate bacterial traits in natural ecosystem and the environmental risk of genetically modified biocontrol bacteria in tomato rhizosphere. Fluctuation of culturable bacteria profile, microbial community structure, and potential horizontal gene transfer was investigated over time after the bacteria treatment to the tomato rhizosphere. Tagged gene transfer to other organisms such as tomato plants and bacteria cultured on various media was examined by polymerase chain reaction, using gene specific primers. Transfer of chromosomally integrated P43-gfp from pc78 to other organisms was not apparent. Population and colony types of culturable bacteria were not significantly affected by the introduction of P. fluorescens pc78 or pc78-48 into tomato rhizosphere. Additionally, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles were investigated to estimate the influence on the microbial community structure in tomato rhizosphere between non-treated and pc78-48-treated samples. Interestingly, rhizosphere soil treated with strain pc78-48 exhibited a significantly different bacterial community structure compared to that of non-treated rhizosphere soil. Our results suggest that biocontrol bacteria treatment influences microbial community in tomato rhizosphere, while the chromosomally modified biocontrol bacteria may not pose any specific environmental risk in terms of gene transfer.

Background : Orbital roof fractures are frequently associated with a high energy impact to the craniofacial region, and displaced orbital roof fractures can cause ophthalmic and neurologic complications and occasionally require open surgical intervention. The purpose of this article was to investigate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of orbital root fractures combined with neurologic injuries after early reconstruction. Methods : Between January 2006 and December 2008, 45 patients with orbital roof fractures were admitted; among them, 37 patients were treated conservatively and 8 patients underwent early surgical intervention for orbital roof fractures. The type of injuries that caused the fractures, patient characteristics, associated fractures, ocular and neurological injuries, patient management, and treatment outcomes were investigated. Results : The patients underwent frontal craniotomy and free bone fragment removal, their orbital roofs were reconstructed with titanium micromesh, and associated fractures were repaired. The mean follow up period was 11 months. There were no postoperative neurologic sequelae. Postoperative computed tomography scans showed anatomically reconstructed orbital roofs. Two of the five patients with traumatic optic neuropathy achieved full visual acuity recovery, one patient showed decreased visual acuity, and the other two patients completely lost their vision due to traumatic optic neuropathy. Preoperative ophthalmic symptoms, such as proptosis, diplopia, upper eyelid ptosis, and enophthalmos were corrected. Conclusions : Early recognition and treatment of orbital roof fractures can reduce intracranial and ocular complications. A coronal flap with frontal craniotomy and orbital roof reconstruction using titanium mesh provides a versatile method and provides good functional and cosmetic results.
Polyurethane oligomers (PUOs) such as UA8297, UP127 and EB8200 were utilized to enhance the anti-bullet property of Dyneema$^{(R)}$/vinylester composites. First, prepregs of PUO and vinylester (XSR10) were prepared via spray coating on Dyneema$^{(R)}$ fabric at 21 % resin content (by volume). In addition, spray coating and film lamination were also carried out with a mixture of XSR10/PUO for selected PUOs. Next, the prepregs were dried at RT for 1-2 h and then at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to remove the solvent and to provide partial cure when necessary. The prepregs were stacked in 24 layers and cured at $120^{\circ}C$ for 5 min under the contact pressure and for additional 25 min at 150 $kg/cm^2$. Finally, the anti-bullet properties of composite samples were evaluated by measuring $V_{50}$ with simulated fragment projectile (SFP, 17 gr). The results showed a 6.5 and 9.0 % increase of $V_{50}$ with UP127 and EB8200, respectively.

Over the last few years, marine environment was found to be a source of surplus natural products and microorganisms with new bioactive secondary metabolites of interest which can divulge nutritional and biological impact on the host. This study aims to assess the possible, inherent and functional probiotic properties of a novel probiotic strain Enterococcus durans F3 (E. durans F3) isolated from the gut of fresh water fish Catla catla. Parameters for evaluating and describing the probiotics described in FAD/WHO guidelines were followed. E. durans F3 demonstrated affirmative results including simulated bile, acid and gastric juice tolerance with exhibited significant bactericidal effect against pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhi, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This can be due to the enterocin produced by E. durans F3 strain, which was resolute by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) gel with amplification of the anticipated fragment of a structural gene; enterocin A, followed by antibiotic susceptibility assessment. Effective antioxidant potentiality against ${\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\alpha}$-picrylhydrazyl free radicals including lipase, bile salt hydrolase activity with auto-aggregation and cell surface hydrophobicity was similarly observed. Results are proving the potentiality of E. durans F3, which can also be used as probiotic starter culture in dairy industries for manufacturing new products that imparts health benefits to the host. Finding the potent and novel probiotic strains will also satisfy the current developing market demand for probiotics.

Sympathetic detonation (SD) of high explosives occurs when a detonating donor initiates neighboring acceptors. The present study focuses on the hydrodynamic simulation of one-on-one sympathetic detonation of 155 mm charge filled with PBXN-109. Both unbuffered and buffered SD configurations are performed while changing the distance between each charge, in order to investigate the detonation sensitivity to a donor initiation. The cause of a SD is by a shock impact for the unbuffered case at a close range, while at a distant range, blast fragment penetration is the primary cause. The buffers can reduce the incident sensitivity to a SD by reducing the strengths of shock wave and impinging fragments.
