  • The presence of hydrogen in industrial plants is a source of damage. Hydrogen attack is one such form of degradation and often causing large tube ruptures that necessitate an immediate shutdown. Hydrogen attack may reduce the fracture toughness as well as the strength of steels. This reduction is caused partially by the presence of cavities and microcracks at the grain boundaries. In the past several techniques have been used with limited results. This paper describes the application of an ultrasonic velocity and attenuation in hydrogen damage. Ultrasonic tests showed a decrease in wave velocity and an increase in attenuation. Such results demonstrate the potential for ultrasonic nondestructive testing to quantify damage. Based on this study, reliable recommendation is suggested to detect hydrogen attack.

  • In this paper to investigate mode I and mode II critical energy release rates, G sub(IC) and G sub(IIC), three prepregs which are domestic products are used. Those are used for the unidirectional composites, but only one is used for the cross-ply laminate composites which is molded [0/90] sub(6s), [0/45] sub(6s) and [0/45/90] sub(6s). The value of G sub(IC) is almost same when modified three calculating methods are applied. The highest value of G sub(IC) at crack initiation is obtained at the [0/90] sub(6s) interlaminar and the lowest one is at the [0/45/90] sub(6s) interlaminar.

  • In the present work, silicon nitride was fabricated with $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ as a sintering additive and its mechanical properties were investigated. Silicon nitride with 3, 5, and 7wt% of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ was prepared and sintered by a Hot Pressing (HP) technique at 1750 and $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The process was performed under different process pressures of 30 and 45 MPa. Mechanical properties (density, strength, hardness, and fracture toughness) were investigated as a function of the $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ content in $Si_3N_4$. $Si_3N_4\;-Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ ceramics showing similar mechanical properties compared with $Si_3N_4-Y_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ ceramics. But its high temperature strength was considerably higher than that of $Si_3N_4-Y_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ ceramics.

  • Nano powders of $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ compounds made by high energy ball milling were pulsed current activated sintered for studying their sintering behaviors and mechanical properties. The advantage of this process is that it allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and inhibition of grain growth. Nano-structured $Al_2TiO_5$ with small amount of $Al_2O_3$ and$TiO_2$ was formed by sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 5 minute, in which average grain size was about 96 nm. Hardness and fracture toughness of the nano-structured $Al_2TiO_5$ compound with a small amount of $Al_2O_3$ and$TiO_2$ were $602kg/mm^2$ and $2.6MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • $TiO_2$-particles containing Co grains are fabricated via thermal hydrogenation and selective oxidation of TiCo alloy. For comparison, $TiO_2$-Co composite powders are prepared by two kinds of methods which were the mechanical carbonization and oxidation process, and the conventional mixing process. The microstructural characteristics of the prepared composites are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scattering electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the composite powders are sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ by spark plasma sintering. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization are found to be higher than those of the samples prepared by the conventional mixing process. Moreover, the microstructures of sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization processes are found to be similar. The difference in the mechanical properties of sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization processes is attributed to the different sizes of metallic Co particles in the samples.

  • Tungsten carbide (WC) hard materials are used in various industries and possess a superior hardness compared to other hard materials. They have particularly high melting points, high strength, and abrasion resistance. Accordingly, tungsten carbide hard materials are used for wear-resistant tools, cutting tools, machining tools, and other tooling materials. In this study, the WC-5wt.%Co, Fe, Ni hard materials are densified using the horizontal ball milled WC-Co, WC-Fe, and WC-Ni powders by a spark plasma sintering process. The WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, and WC-5Ni hard materials are almost completely densified with a relative density of up to 99.6% after simultaneous application of a pressure of 60 MPa and an electric current for about 15 min without any significant change in the grain size. The average grain size of WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, and WC-5Ni that was produced through SPS was about 0.421, 0.779, and $0.429{\mu}m$, respectively. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, WC-5Ni hard materials were also investigated.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of high-energy mechanical milling (HEMM) time and sintering temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of the TiAl composite fabricated by pulse current activated sintering. TiAl intermetallic powders were milled by HEMM for 1h, 4h, and 8h respectively. Thermal analysis was used to observe the phase transformation of the milled TiAl powders. The sintering time decreased with increase of milling time. The hardness and fracture toughness of the sintered specimens also was improved with increasing milling time. The grain size of the sintered specimens which was milled for 4h was in the range of 50~100 nm.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels. Heat treatment was carried out at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, followed by controlled cooling. The cooling rates were $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $47.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $33.3{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $16.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $11.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ and $2.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, which resulted in variations of the microstructure, such as the fractional change of the ferrite phase and sigma phase formation. Fatigue, hardness, impact and tensile tests were performed on the specimens with different cooling rates. The precipitation of the ${\sigma}$ phase caused a hardness increase and a sharp decrease of toughness and tensile elongation. The fatigue limit of the sample with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was 26 MPa higher than that of the sample with a cooling rate of $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$. Our observations of the fracture surface confirmed that the higher fatigue resistance of the specimen with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was caused by the delay of the fatigue crack growth, in addition to higher yield strength.
