  • Bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded (FG) higher-order beams resting on two parameter (Winkler-Pasternak) elastic foundation are studied using a new inverse hyperbolic beam theory. The material properties of the beam are graded along the thickness direction according to the power-law distribution. In the present theory, the axial displacement accounts for an inverse hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beams. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations of motion. Navier type analytical solutions are obtained for the bending, bucking and vibration problems. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of power-law index, length-to-thickness ratio and foundation parameter on the displacements, stresses, critical buckling loads and frequencies. Numerical results by using parabolic beam theory of Reddy and first-order beam theory of Timoshenko are specially generated for comparison of present results and found in excellent agreement with each other.

  • A series of numerical simulations on the several types of breakwaters on the foundation systems utilizing buoyancy were carried out in plane-strain conditions using the modified Cam-Clay model and the Biot's consolidation theory. Improved foundation system by the replacement of original ground with light weighted material, expandable poly-styrene (called below EPS) and several foundation systems with buoyant cells were used. From the results of numerical simulations we found that the foundation systems utilizing buoyancy are efficient to reduce the maximum consolidation settlements without reducing lateral safety.

  • In generally, grouting consists of injecting a suspension or solution into the voids of soils. The low slump mortar grout has been used in America since 1950's. The Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff under relatively high pressure, form a cylinderical grout support pile. The grout generally does not enter soil pores but remains in homogeneous mass that gives controlled displacement either to compact loose soils, or for lifting of structures, or both. In this paper, on the case of the reinforcement construction of 00 plant that the foundation's bearing capacity is insufficient and is to reinforce the foundation, a study has been peformed to analyze the effectiveness of the ground improvement. The bearing capacity of the Compaction Pile has been verified by the S.P.T and the settlement of the improved ground has been monitored rising the magnetic extensometer.

  • In this paper, an analytical method for the Post-buckling response of cylindrical shells with spiral stiffeners surrounded by an elastic medium subjected to external pressure is presented. The proposed model is based on two parameters elastic foundation Winkler and Pasternak. The material properties of the shell and stiffeners are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. According to the Von Karman nonlinear equations and the classical plate theory of shells, strain-displacement relations are obtained. The smeared stiffeners technique and Galerkin method is used to solve the nonlinear problem. To valid the formulations, comparisons are made with the available solutions for nonlinear static buckling of stiffened homogeneous and un-stiffened FGM cylindrical shells. The obtained results show the elastic foundation Winkler on the response of buckling is more effective than the elastic foundation Pasternak. Also the ceramic shells buckling strength higher than the metal shells and minimum critical buckling load is occurred, when both of the stiffeners have angle of thirty degrees.

  • This paper presents nonlinear analysis of a functionally graded square plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. The effect of non homogeneous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation has been performed for studying the effect of two parameters of assumed foundation on the mechanical and electrical components. A comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate nonlinear dynamic responses of functionally graded composite beam resting on the nonlinear viscoelastic foundation subjected to moving mass with temperature rising. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the finite strain theory and the governing nonlinear dynamic equation is obtained by using the Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then the governing equation is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The influences of temperature rising, material distribution parameter, nonlinear viscoelastic foundation parameters, magnitude and velocity of the moving mass on the nonlinear dynamic responses are investigated. Also, the buckling temperatures of the functionally graded beams based on the finite strain theory are obtained.

  • This study investigates free and damped vibration behaviours of porous functionally graded shells supported by Winkler-Pasternak foundation, considering different geometries. Utilizing a higher-order shear deformation theory, the displacement field is determined. The equations of motion are formulated using Hamilton's principle, and the solutions are obtained Navier's method employing double Fourier series. Parametric studies regarding the effects of porosity, material distribution, elastic foundation, shell geometry and damping are carried out. Results are given in tabular and graphical form for the free and forced vibration analyses, respectively.

  • Soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is one of the important issues in the seismic design for evaluating the exact behavior of the system. A seismic design of a structure can be more precise and economical, provided that the effect of SFSI is properly taken into account. In this study, a series of the dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to compare the seismic response of the single degree of freedom(SDOF) structure on the various types of the foundation. The shallow and pile foundations were made up of diverse mass and different conjunctive condition, respectively. The test specimen consisted of dry sand deposit, foundation, and SDOF structure in a centrifuge box. Several types of earthquake motions were sequentially applied to the test specimen from weak to strong intensity of them, which is known as a stage test. Results from the centrifuge tests showed that the seismic responses of the SDOF structure on the shallow foundation and disconnected pile foundation decreased by the foundation rocking. On the other hand, those on the connected pile foundation gradually increased with intensity of input motion. The allowable displacement of the foundation under the strong earthquake, the shallow and the disconnected pile foundation, have an advantage in dissipating the earthquake energy for the seismic design.
