Mountain streams, which are major components of an entire river network, play an important role as the source of water, sediment, coarse and fine organic matter, and nutrients for lowland rivers. Therefore, dynamics and downstream linkages of each compartment of the mountain stream can be essential for watershed management in catchment scale. The dynamics and downstream linkages are understood as a development of step-pool sequences along a river course. Recently, stream restoration after flooding event often employ the development of step-pool sequences in the world. In this paper, we 1) examined the geomorphic characteristics and the role of step-pool sequences in steep mountain streams by reviewing the results of past studies, and 2) introduced the case studies of stream restoration using step-pool sequences, and finally 3) addressed design methods considering geometry and stability of artificial step-pool sequences for stream restoration. Step-pool sequences play an important role not only as roughness with energy dissipation but also as heterogeneity of stream feature for aquatic habitat. Step-pool sequences, even if they are constructed artificially along a stream, may be effective for small stream restoration considering eco-friendly torrent controls. So far the artificial step-pool sequences were employed for mountainous streams, but those would be applied to urban stream.

This study is aimed to review the previous research accomplishments with analysis of problems and to suggest the counter plan for the watershed management and the ongoing research strategy. Phytoremediation provides a cost-effective techniques having a merit of low investment and maintenance cost. It could be one of the best techniques, which is an alternative plan to overcome economical situation and lack of experts in our country. In forest watershed affected by waste water and heavy metal pollutants should be controlled by vegetative remediation system, but the disposal techniques of harvested plant materials should be developed. Also, high degree areas of natural vegetation as a key model to recover the vegetation should be well conserved. It is important to restore forest continuity between upper stream and lower stream basin with the restoration of damaged in forest watershed. It is established to integrated protection system for land use and management plan and to natural environment evaluation methods affected by projects such as erosion control and developments in stream and forest. In addition, I suggest the continuous environmental monitoring system to treat the pollutions concerned.

The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of a torrent control structure using customized tetrapods on the forest water quality conservation and management. The study was conducted in the Honggye valley located in Sanchung-gun, Gyungsangnam-do, and stream water quality was compared before and after construction of torrent control structure. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, pH of stream water didn't get out of the range of River water quality standard class I. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, Dissolved Oxygen concentration didn't change, and Electrical Conductivity measurements agreed well within the range of normal clean stream water quality. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, average of total amount of anion was 3.07/2.30~3.60 mg/L, being slightly greater than before construction. Stream water quality after construction of the torrent control structure was similar to before construction. Therefore, it was find out that the torrent control structure didn't affect stream water quality.
To estimate headwater stream temperature with seasonal variations, we analyzed precipitation, runoff and air temperature in experimental forest of Kangwon National University, Gangwon-do (2017~2018 years). The daily mean value of headwater stream temperature for spring was 6.9~17.7℃ and correlated with air temperature, that for summer and fall were 12.2~26.3℃ and 3.6~19.3℃, correlated with air temperature and runoff. Based on seasonal variations, we applied for stepwise multiple linear regression analyses to estimate headwater stream temperature with seasonal variations. The equations were headwater stream temperature(WT)spring=(0.553×Air temperature)+(0.086×Runoff)+4.145 (R2=0.505; p<0.01), WTsummer=(0.756×Air temperature)+(-0.072×Runoff)+2.670 (R2=0.510; p<0.01), and WTfall=(0.738×Air temperature)+(0.028×Precipitation)+2.660 (R2=0.844; p<0.01). The coefficient of determination (R2) was greater than when it was estimated by air temperature in all seasons and progressively increased from spring to winter. Therefore, we indicated difference on estimated magnitude of stepwise multiple linear regression, due to effects on headwater stream temperature of different environmental factors with seasonal variations. Furthermore, temporal factors with spatial characteristics (e.g., river versus headwater stream) could be recommended for estimating headwater stream temperature.
We classified the streamside plant community by phyto-sociological method and analyzed the relationship between environment factors and vegetation structure by using the classification and ordination method. We found that twenty one plant communities were classified according to dominant species at the natural streamside valley forest with surveying the 65 quadrats (10 m × 10 m). From the survey results, the hardwood plant communities were classified as streamside valley forest and the softwood plant communities as riparian forest according to the degree of flooding. The valley forest had a distribution of 17 plant communities which was 65% (42 quadrats) of 65 quadrats: Maackia amurensis community, Betula davurica community, Quercus variabilis community, Pinus densiflora community, Q. serrata community, Prunus sargentii community, and Meliosma oldhamii community etc. The riparian forest had a distribution of four plant communities which was 35% (23 quadrats) of 65 quadrats: Salix koreensis community, S. rorida community, S. purpurea var. japonica community, and S. glandulosa community, etc. From the two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) analysis, we found indicator species Oplismenus undulatifolius and Lindera obtusiloba for the streamside valley forest and Humulus japonicus, Phragmites japonica, and S. koreensis for the riparian forest. From the results of the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), coordinates, altitude, and stream structure showed low correlation to the distribution of the plant community. Therefore, it seemed that valley forest and riparian forest were distinguished by the stream gradient and waterway width which determined by the stream water level.
This study was carried out to evaluate the capacity of environment purification of forest and to reveal formation processes of stream water quality by evaluating water quality variations in forest hydrological processes. Water quantity, pH, electric conductivity(EC), dissolved oxygen(DO), and dissolved matter concentrations were monitored in open rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, litter flow and short-term stream flow for one unit storm, and also for those were monitored in long-term stream flow in Palgong, Yongsung, and Daedong catchments. The results were summarized as follows; 1. pH and DO values of stream flow were increased as the flux increased but EC values were decreased. 2. pH values of stemflow and throughfall were decreased with the lapse of rainfall time with lower values than open rainfall. Arid EC values were higher in initial rainfall period but lower gradually with the lapse of time than open rainfall. In litter flow, pH values were lower than open rainfall but EC values were higher. In stream flow, pH values of stream flow showed a high level in initial rainfall period and decreased remarkably with the lapse of time, but it recovered after the rainfall stopped. And however, the values of EC showed almost reverse tendency. DO values of litter flow and stream flow were decreased gradually with the lapse of time in litter flow and stream flow but there were no any tendency in open rainfall, stemflow and throughfall. 3. pH values of stemflow and throughfall in Quercus acutissima were higher than in Pinus densiflora, but EC values were lower. Total amount of canons in stemflow was higher in Pinus densiflora than in Quercus acutissima. 4. pH, DO, EC and total amount of cation values in hydrological processes were in the order of; litter flow
Headwater streams provide various microhabitats, resulting in high diversity of macroinvertebrate community. In this study, we compared the differences of communities between two adjacent headwater streams (Jangjeon stream (GRJ; GRJ1-GRJ5) and Haanmi stream (GRH; GRH1-GRH3)) in Jungwang and Gariwang mountains, Gangwon-do and evaluated the effects of habitat condition to the macroinvertebrates community composition. In order to characterize the macroinvertebrate communities and extract influential environmental factors, we applied to Cluster analysis (CA), Indicator species analysis and Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Total 33,613 individuals in 3 phyla, 5 classes, 13 orders, 51 families, and 114 taxa (genera or species) were collected. Gammarus sp. was dominant at the upper stream of GRJ, whereas Chironomidae spp. was abundant at GRH and the downstream of GRJ. The CA classified samples into six clusters (1-6) reflecting spatial and temporal variation of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Benthic macroinvertebrate community composition was significantly different between two adjacent streams. Sweltsa sp. 1, Psilotreta kisoensis, Rhyacophila shikotsuensis and Serratella setigera were identified as representative indicator species for clusters 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively. Similar to CA results, NMDS revealed the spatial and temporal differences of benthic macroinvertebrate communities, indicating the difference of community composition as well as microhabitat condition. Forest composition, proportion of boulders (>256 mm), and water velocity were main factors affecting the macroinvertebrate community composition.
This study was carried out to clarify the influences of forest environmental factors on turbidity of Stream water on three stands (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) of small watershed in Samgyeri Naedong-myeon Jinju-si Gyeongsangnam-do. The relationship between turbidity and forest environmental factors was a positive correlation at 1% level with chromaticity, suspended solid, sediment runoff erosion, slope, rainfall intensity, preceding dry days, watershed area and stream length and at 5% level with accumulative rainfall. The important factors that affected turbidity in small watershed showed in order of preceding dry days, rainfall intensity, stream length, chromaticity and suspended solid. In the stepwise regression between turbidity and forest environmental factors, the estimation equation is as follow; Y=-28.125+0.047x (suspended solid)+0.058x (chromaticity)+1.518x (rainfall intensity)+0.264x (stream length)+1.837x (preceding dry days). The results indicates that dangerous areas of landslide and soil runoff by land use could be applied to the mitigation measures such as afforestation, erosion check dam and revetment for erosion control and water quality management in small watershed.

This study was carried out to clarify the change characteristics of stream water quality by land-use of forest from July to September, 2000 in three stands(Pinus densiflora, Castanea crenata (I), Castanea crenata (II) stand) of Jeongpyeong-ri, Jinju-si, Gyeongnam. The mean pH of rainfall results in acid rain of 5.3. The pH of stream water in three stands was high in order of Pinus densiflora (pH 6.59), Castanea crenata (II)(pH 6.53) and Castanea crenata (I) stand(pH 6.47). The electrical conductivity of stream water was high in order of Castanea crenata (I), Pinus densiflora and Castanea crenata (II) stand. Cations contents of three stands in stream water were high in order of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and ${NH_4}^+$. But anions of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand were high in order of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ and ${NO_3}^-$. In Castanea crenata (I) stand cations of stream water were high in order of ${NO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$. The level of pH, ${NH_4}^+$, ${NO_3}^-$, $Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand reached within the level of domestic use standard for drinking water But the level of ${NO_3}^-$ of stream water in Castanea crenata (I) stand was higher than that of domestic use standard. Therefore, non-point sources like forest watersheds which are fertilizer application lands should be taken to the appropriate mitigation measures.
This study was carried out to clarify the change characteristics of stream water quality by type of forest from June to August, 2009 in three stands (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) of Samgye-ri Naedong-myeon Jinju-si Gyeongsangnam-do. The pH of stream water in three stands was highest in Pinus densiflora (pH 7.18) followed by Castanea crenata (pH 6.90) and Plantation land (pH 6.90) while the electrical conductivity of stream water was highest in Plantation land followed by Castanea crenata stand and Pinus densiflora stand was the lowest. Cations contents of stream water in three stands were high in order of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^{+}$, and $NH_{4}{^{+}}$. But anions of stream water in Castanea crenata stand and Pinus densiflora stand were high in order of $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$, $Cl^{-}$ and $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ while those of stream water in Plantation land were high in order of $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$, $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ and $C\lambda^{-}$. The stream water in three stands was significant at pH, EC, $NO{^{3-}}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^{+}$, $Cl^{-}$, TNU and Color by duncan test. These results indicate that quality of stream water have a difference among three stands. The level of pH, $NH_{4}{^{+}}$, $Cl^{-}$, $SO_{4}{^{2-}}$ and $NO_{3}{^{-}}$ of stream water in three stands were within the domestic use standard for drinking water. but turbidity and color of stream water were more than that of domestic use standard for drinking water. Therefore, non-point sources like urban forest watersheds which are soil erosion and fertilizer application lands should be taken to the appropriate mitigation measures if they are to be used as source of drinking water.
