  • This study analyzed the management efficiency of jujube, bitter persimmon, and chestnut farms using data envelopment analysis (DEA). And this study analyzed causes affecting management inefficiency of those farms using the two-step method. The main findings are as follows. First, as self and employment labor costs are increased, it is important to reduce labor costs which account for 60~70% of the total production cost. Second, efforts to improve management efficiency are needed as overall efficiency of farms were decreased. Third, a pesticide cost per 10a representing a level of pesticide had a negative effect or did not have a statistically significant effect on the management efficiency. This implies that expanding environment-friendly production by reducing pesticides is effective for improving the management efficiency. Fourth, as leading farms were more efficient than general farms, technology dissemination and education through leading farms are important for improving efficiency, and efforts are needed to promote exchange between leading and general farms.

  • There have been some problems of high labor. low productivity in the existing systems of bonsai cultivation. This study was conducted to cultivate a large quantity of hig-quality bonsai through the development of bottom irrigation system and management method. Bonsai placed on the FRP bed were grown very well by bottom irrigation system compared with direct watering and sprinkler system. It was concluded that bottom irrigation system was possible to reduce considerable manual labor and produce mass production of high-quality bonsai within shorter periods. This research was finally found that the growth was significantly better and earlier production was certain in the vinyl house, had another advantage which could cultivate less cold-resistant species and therefore broadened a range of species selection for market supply. Cultivation techniques by the use of vinyl house and bottom irrigation system developed was quite effective for early production of bonsai as well as for high productive and value added. This project developed a new practical techniques and systems which can make mass and early production of bonsai with high quality through input of less labor. Interest in bonsai is now expanding in landscape horticulture and other fields concerned, and bonsai export of our country is also increasing. Results from this research will make a great contribution to enhancing of bonsai cultivator's competitive position in world markets and to improving of their annual income.

  • Pine mushroom (Tricholoma matsutake) is one of the most profitable forest products in Korea. We postulated a hypothesis that a high rate of returns to labor input could make the harvest of pine mushroom off the optimum level. In the view of developing a sustainable production strategy for pine mushroom producers, production of pine mushroom collectors and pine mushroom growth function were estimated using maximum entropy method. Annual pine mushroom production and labor input were the data used in the estimation of production function of pine mushroom collectors and pine mushroom growth function. The level of sustainable maximum production derived from the estimated function. The production function estimated shows that production of pine mushroom is affected more by the resource of pine mushroom stocked in the forests than by labor that households put in forestry business. The production function of mushroom collectors and the estimated growth function indicate that pine mushroom harvests for the period of 2005-2011 did not reach the potential level of maximum sustainable production. Therefore, we suggest that pine mushroom harvest should be controlled until the resource stock of pine mushroom in the forests increases to the level of maximum sustainable production.

  • One of the most important factors influencing the outbreak and severity of foliar diseases is the duration of wetness from dew deposition, rainfall, or irrigation. Models may provide good alternatives for assessing leaf wetness duration (LWD) without the labor, cost, and inconvenience of making measurements with sensors.(omitted)

  • In 2014, Seoul Metropolitan Government launched a response service aimed at responding promptly to civil complaints. The complaints received are categorized based on their content and sent to the department in charge. If this part can be automated, the time and labor costs will be reduced. In this study, we collected 17,700 cases of complaints for 7 years from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2017. We compared the XGBoost with RandomForest and confirmed the suitability of Korean text classification. As a result, the accuracy of XGBoost compared to RandomForest is generally high. The accuracy of RandomForest was unstable after upsampling and downsampling using the same sample, while XGBoost showed stable overall accuracy.

  • The model and its example were provided to predict wood production for a district forest planning. The method of Gentan probability is widely accepted for the prediction of wood production. The suggested model is different in the decision of cutting age distribution from that of Prof. Suzuki; the former can use either Weibull distribution or Gamma distribution, but the latter is possible only by Gamma distribution. This developed system can be used not only for establishing a district forest planning, but also for providing forest management information, such as periodic harvest volume, growing stock, labor requirement, and so forth.

  • This report surveyed degradation of forest environment and rehabilitation in Ashio of Japan. Since 1880, a large scale forestry in this area has been destroyed by sooty smoke, and the local government invested heavily to rehabilitate the damaged forestry and denuded mountains. These degradations are due to complex operations, such as sulfurous acid gas from copper refinery, forest fires, steep slope and disadvantageous climate. The rehabilitation works on degraded forestry(2,399ha) were undertaken by tree planting fur three years from 1897. However, forest degradation and disasters were continued, and the total damaged areas were about 2,400~3,000ha in 1956. A Manual labor method, a Helicopter method and also Combination of manual labor and helicopter method had been adopted to rehabilitation works from 1945 to 1996, while 828.19ha of the degraded mountains was rehabilitated. Total investment for those projects was 80 billion yen. A debris control dam, a soil arresting structure, a vegetation-block, a vegetation sack measures and tree planting have implemented significantly fur the method of rehabilitation. An objective of manual labor works is a complete rehabilitation on each place through 3 stage working. The revived green areas accounted fur 49% of the total, and the entire afforest areas are less than 10%. In coming 25 years, an amount of 21.3 billion yen will be invested to rehabilitate 564ha of degraded mountain lands. However, it is impossible to estimate that how long it will take until the whole degraded mountain lands are completely rehabilitated. Rehabilitation works in Ashio may be applicable to environmental restoration and revegetation in the abandoned coal-mine lands of Korea.

  • This study was carried out for preliminary feasibility review to investigate work efficiency of chestnut harvest using yield net and to find a way to reduce the cost for purchasing and managing yield net. To this end, we conducted a survey of 6 forest farm houses in Cheongyang, Gongju and Buyeo regions where yield nets are being used efficiently. Cost-benefit analysis based on Net Present Value and Benefit Cost Ratio was used to examine the investment profitability. While regions of Cheongyang A, Cheongyang B and Buyeo A are profitable in spite of no subsidy for purchasing yield net from the government, the regions of Gongju A, Gongju B and Buyeo B are not profitable without subsidy. When an 80% of subsidy for purchasing yield nets is provided, the forest farm houses in Cheongyang A, Cheongyang B, Buyeo A and Gongju B regions are found to be profitable while those in Gongju A and Buyeo B regions are still not profitable. We consider that the different results come from the differences in the planting method of chestnut, labor efficiency, labor skill and the orchard conditions such as slop. Finally, several efforts for government and cultivator are suggested to expand the use of yield net; planting chestnut in line, establishing installation and management methods, supporting the cost for purchasing yield net and studying detailed effects besides profitability issue.

  • The purpose of the study is to give ROI information about management status and investment returns to someone who will newly cultivate Rhus verniciflura and expand area of Rhus verniciflura cultivation. In this study, IRR (Internal Rate of Returns), B/C Ratio and NPV are applied for ROI analysis. We basically surveyed thirty household among Rhus verniciflura cultivation farmhouses in chief producing districts Won-ju in Gang- Won, Ok-Cheon in Chung-Buk, Ham-Yang in Gyeong-Nam in Korea from May until October in 2011. Hence, the research surveyed these farmers about production cost, management cost, input labors and materials, land price and etc. by working process to calculate production and operation cost. As the result of farm survey, the result of the analysis shows income rate 27.76%, B/C Ratio 2.5, and NPV 121,830,831 won in $16,500m^2$ with 10 years period when local price of Rhus verniciflura is 2,200,000 won/3.75 kg at locals with 3% discount rate is applied. Therefore, starting open field cultivation of Rhus verniciflura, which requires intensive labor or expanding the cultivation area needs more labor force.
