  • We investigated the effect of extracts($50{\mu}g/mL$) from 31 folk plants in Ulleung Island on nitric oxide(NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Actinidia arguta(leaf, twig), Hovenia dulcis(leaf), Camellia japonica(leaf, twig), Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula(leaf, twig) and Fallopia sachalinensis(root) showed significant NO inhibition activity(42%~88% NO inhibition rate). Of them, we selected 3 samples(A. arguta, H. dulcis and C. japonica) showing more than 50% NO inhibition activity and little effect on cell viability. We found that the extracts suppressed the NO and prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$ produced by LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells in dose-dependent manners.

  • The wind speed reduction capability of forest belt of Caragana Korshinskili Kom in Yanchi, Ningxia province in China is as follows. 1. At the height of 0.5 m, the windbreak effect is 3-Strip (30.22%) > 2-Strip (26.53%) > 1-Strip (16.28%) from 1H (H = Tree Height) to 5H, and the windbreak effect is 2-Strip (16.11%) > 3-Strip (12.79%) > 1-Strip (9.82%) for greater than 7H. Further analysis of 2-Strip and 3-Strip revealed that the wind reduction effect of 2-Strip spread to 44H and 3-Strip spread to 27H. This result implies that 3-Strip is most effective for short distances and 2-Strip is most effective for long distances. 2. At the height of 1.0m, the wind speed was relatively constant and the reduction rate of wind speed had a minimal variation, with the reduction rate of 1-Strip (8.04%), 2-Strip (8.23%), and 3-Strip (7.43%). 3. The sandbreak effect is 2-Strip (55.28%) > 3-Strip (37.13%) > 1-Strip (20.87%). Especially, The rate of sandbreak of 1H (86.06%) of 2-Strip is most effective value in whole data.

  • This study was designed to identify the actual state of naturalized plants and invasive alien species that cause disturbances to the ecosystem, plants which are introduced after forest restoration, and explore the implications resulting from the project. Onsite examination included 29 sites which have been subjected to forest restoration by the Korea Forest Service. Once these were chosen, activity took place twice a year in the spring (May-June) and in the summer (August-September) in 2020 and 2021. Areas not relevant to the project sites were excluded from this activity so that we could identify the plants that could be understood to have been introduced or brought into the site after the actual forest restoration. And the correlation was analyzed, between the naturalized flora within the project sites and the working types applied to the site through confirmation of completion of the restoration project. The naturalized plants appearing on the entire site cover a total of 109 taxa, which includes 29 families, 80 genera, 108 species and 1 subspecies, while invasive plants included 3 families, 7 genera and 8 species. The number of classifications and the naturalization rate gradually decreased over time, after the project. While there was no significant difference between the number of classification groups and the naturalization rate for naturalized plants between project sites, given the number of taxa of naturalized plants, organized by type of damage, there were relatively more naturalized plants that appeared in the severed section of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range, as well as at quarry and facility sites. Seeding apparently results in naturalization rates as high as 15.545%, on average, based on comparisons of naturalization rates by sowing, seeding, planting, herb planting, and sod pitching channels, all of these being methods of vegetation for planting/greening of bareland and slopes within the project areas. With no seeding, it was 9.167%, higher than the average. As for other vegetation, there was no significant difference depending on application of the working type. This means that unlike the plants subjected to planting, the working type of seed planting which makes it difficult to identify whether a certain plant is a naturalized plant greatly affects the introduction of naturalized plants to the restoration sites, even when using herb planting and sod pitching to control plants and results. Therefore the study suggests that there be inspection by experts of seeds when sowing within restoration sites. The results of this study suggest good practices that will help to direct effective vegetation restoration and follow-up management.

  • This study was carried out to research structure of forest vegetation and site condition, and supply basic data for conservation of pine forest and ecologically sustainable forest management and control in Anmyondo area. The forest of Anmyondo were largely classified as four forest community : Pinus densiflora community, Pinus thunbergii community, Pinus rigida community, and Quercus variabilis community. Organic matter, total nitrogen, and other nutrients in soil of the study area were relatively low, and average soil pH was 4.9. Soil texture was sandy clay or heavy clay and so the aeration and permeability could be poor. In this study site, the methods such as the promotion of germination of pine seeds through removal of forest floor and inducement of natural regeneration through such method as regeneration under shelter wood would be better than the method such as afforestation after clear-cutting for conservation the pine forests. Also, it will be a good method to practice tending for hardwood species in the dominant areas by hardwood species.

  • Currently, species extinctions are increasing due to climate change and continued anthropogenic impact. We selected 300 species for conservation with emphasis on plants co-occurring in the Baekdudaegan area, which is a large ecological axis of Korea. We aimed to investigate the vegetation community and environmental characteristics of Zabelia tyaihyonii in the limestone habitat among the target plant species in the Baekdudaegan region to derive effective conservation strategies. In Danyang-gun, Yeongwol-gun, and Jecheon-si, we selected 36 investigation sites where Z. tyaihyonii was present. We investigated the vegetation, flora, soil and physical environment. We also found notable plants such as Thalictrum petaloideum, Sillaphyton podagraria, and Neillia uekii at the investigation sites. We classified forest vegetation community types into 4 vegetation units and 7 species group types. With canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of the vegetation community and habitat factors, we determined the overall explanatory power to be 75.2%, and we classified the environmental characteristics of the habitat of Z. tyaihyonii into a grouping of three. Among these, we detected a relationship between the environmental factors elevation, slope, organic matter, rock ratio, pH, potassium, and sodium. We identified numerous rare and endemic plants, including Thalictrum petaloideum, in the investigation site, and determined that these groups needed to be preserved at the habitat level. In the classification of the vegetation units analyzed based on the emerging plants and the CCA, we reaffirmed the uniqueness and specificity of the vegetation community in the habitat of Z. tyaihyonii. We anticipate that our results will be used as scientific evidence for the empirical conservation of the native habitats of Z. tyaihyonii.

  • The habitats characteristics of Pedicularis ishidoyana were investigated to provide basic data for conservation and restoration. The altitude ranged from 107m to 494m, with inclinations of $5{\sim}20^{\circ}$. As a result of vegetation survey within natural populations, a total of 243 taxa were identified 18 quadrates in 6 natural habitats. The importance value of Pedicularis ishidoyana is 13.2% based on the coverage and frequency of the herb layer with in the populations. NMS analysis, environmental impact of Pedicularis ishidoyana a decisive impact on the habitat factors, the species composition of the woody layer, rather than the species composition of the herb layer can say is more dominant. Preservation of habitat conditions is important for stable maintenance the flora, and the surrounding area including habitats has to be desegnated a protection area for habitats preservation.

  • It is difficult to generate DTM using aerial photographs because trees usually cover disaster occurred areas. So, this study proposed how to filter by moving window using digital aerial photographs and generate accurate DTM. The results were compared with those of adaptive filtering by commercial digital photogrammetry software (Socet set) to find out the effect of tree removal by window size in forest soil sediment disaster. And then they were compared with DTM generated from LiDAR data. As a result, it was showed that the accuracy of moving filtering DTM was lower than that of LiDAR DTM while it was higher by 6m than that of Adaptive filtering.

  • BACKGROUND: In recent year, there has been great concern regarding agricultural land uses and their importance for the conservation of biodiversity. Rice fields are managed unique wetland for wildlife, especially waterbirds. A comprehensive monitoring of the waterbird assemblage to understand patterning changes was attempted for rice ecosystem in South Korea. This rice ecosystem has been recognized as one of the most important for waterbirds conservation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Biweekly monitoring was implemented for the 4 years from April 2009 to March 2010, from April 2011 to March 2014. 32 species of waterbirds were observed. Self-organizing map (SOM) and random forest were applied to the waterbirds dataset to identify the characteristics in waterbirds distribution. SOM and random forest analysis clearly classified into four clusters and extract ecological information from waterbird dataset. Waterbird assemblages represented strong seasonality and habitat use according to waterbird group such as shorebirds, herons and waterfowl. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that the combination of SOM and random forest analysis could be useful for ecosystem assessment and management. Furthermore, we strongly suggested that a strict management strategy for the rice fields to conserve the waterbirds. The strategy could be seasonally and species specific.

  • In order to design new fertilizers for forests, seedlings of Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and FQuercus acutissima were treated with different fertilizers, and nutrient concentrations in seedling components were analyzed. In general, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in seedling components increased after N and P application. Potassium (K) concentration in seedling components of Pinus densiflora and Quercus acutissima increased after N, P and K application. However, there were no significant changes in calcium (Ca), sodium (Na) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations. Nitrogen and P concentrations in seedling components increased with the amount of solid combination fertilizer and UF combination fertilizer. Potassium concentration for Pinus densiflora and Na and Ca concentrations for Larix leptolepis also increased with the amount of combination fertilizers. However, nutrient concentrations in seedling components showed no significant changes with different combination fertilizers.
