  • Using OAuth protocol, third-party applications on the Android operating system use user's credentials or access tokens that have access authority on user's resources to gain user's account and personal information from account information providers. These credentials and token information are stored in the device by the OAuth data management method provided by the Android operating system. If this information is leaked, the attacker can use the leaked credential and token data to get user's personal data without login. This feature enables the digital forensic investigator to collect data directly from the remote server of the services used by the target of investigation in terms of collecting evidence data. Evidence data collected at a remote location can be a basis for secondary warranties and provide evidence which can be very important evidence when an attacker attempts to destroy evidence, such as the removal of an application from an Android device. In this paper, we analyze the management status of OAuth tokens in various Android operating system and device environment, and show how to collect data of various third party applications using it. This paper introduces a method of expanding the scope of data acquisition by collecting remote data of the services used by the subject of investigation from the viewpoint of digital forensics.

  • Swabs are useful and common sampling tools in various research fields, such as medicine, ecology, biotechnology, forensic medicine, and pollutant monitoring systems. Collection reagents are one of the essential components in sampling. It is important to develop a sample collection kit and designate an appropriate storage temperature because samples need to be stored for a long time. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of three collection reagents and three storage temperatures on the recovery of living bacteria without media. We selected Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as representative environmental bacteria. Distilled water (DW), phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and Tris-EDTA (TE) buffer were used as collection reagents and stored at 22℃, 4℃, and -70℃ after sampling. The results of using each collection reagent and storage temperature on the bacteria were compared using relative light units (RLU) and the number of colony forming units (CFU). When using -70℃ storage temperature and the TE buffer, the number of living bacteria and the RLU values remained constant. It is therefore recommended that the sample be stored at -70℃ immediately after collection and a TE buffer solution be used as the collection reagent.

  • In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was employed to detect 26 antidiabetic compounds in adulterated dietary supplements using a simple, selective method. The work presented herein may help prevent incidents related to food adulteration and restrict the illegal food market. The best separation was obtained on a Shiseido Capcell Pak(R) C18 MG-II ($2.0mm{\times}100mm$, $3{\mu}m$), which improved the peak shape and MS detection sensitivity of the target compounds. A gradient elution system composed of 0.1 % (v/v) formic acid in distilled water and methanol at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min for 18 min was utilized. A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source operated in the positive or negative mode was employed as the detector. The developed method was validated as follows: specificity was confirmed in the multiple reaction monitoring mode using the precursor and product ion pairs. For solid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL, and for liquid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL. Satisfactory linearity was obtained from calibration curves, with $R^2$ > 0.99. Both intra and inter-day precision were less than 13.19 %. Accuracies ranged from 80.69 to 118.81 % (intra/inter-day), with a stability of less than 14.88 %. Mean recovery was found to be 80.6-119.0 % and less than 13.4 % RSD. Using the validated method, glibenclamide and pioglitazone were simultaneously determined in one capsule at concentrations of 1.52 and 0.53 mg (per capsule), respectively.

  • General users who use smartphone apps often use the Vault app to protect personal information such as photos and videos owned by individuals. However, there are increasing cases of criminals using the Vault app function for anti-forensic purposes to hide illegal videos. These apps are one of the apps registered on Google Play. This paper proposes a methodology for extracting feature points through XML-based keyword frequency analysis to explore Vault apps used by criminals, and text mining techniques are applied to extract feature points. In this paper, XML syntax was compared and analyzed using strings.xml files included in the app for 15 hidden Vault anti-forensics apps and non-hidden Vault apps, respectively. In hidden Vault anti-forensics apps, more hidden-related words are found at a higher frequency in the first and second rounds of terminology processing. Unlike most conventional methods of static analysis of APK files from an engineering point of view, this paper is meaningful in that it approached from a humanities and sociological point of view to find a feature of classifying anti-forensics apps. In conclusion, applying text mining techniques through XML parsing can be used as basic data for exploring hidden Vault anti-forensics apps.

  • Humans technological advancements have resulted in the depletion of whale resources. Accordingly, the International Whaling Commission was established to preserve whale resources and ensure the orderly development of the whaling industry. After a commercial whaling moratorium came into effect, the international trade of whale meat and related products was banned. However, There is a systematic activity through illegal remodeling ships because whales incidentally caught may be distributed in Korea and have a significant economic benefit. Although suspected illegal whaling is actively cracked down, but it is still insufficient to prevent illegal whaling and distribution. To prevent this, stereoscopic crackdowns utilizing air forces and patrol ships are effective, and it is necessary to quickly separate the captured ship and crew to prevent the destruction of evidence. For the transparent distribution of whale meat, it is necessary to advance related technologies such as whale species identification and individual identification of forensic science institutions based on whale DNA database of the National Institute of Fisheries Science. Accordingly, the Korea Coast Guard Research Center is directly conducting research on related national R&D project. To increase the efficiency of identifying whale-related evidence at crime scene, a rapid test kit that responds specifically to whale bloodstrains is developing and evidence transport packs are manufacturing and distributing, while identification technologies are also being advanced.

  • Profiling is recognized as a representative application area of domestic criminal psychology, and the National Police Agency profiler is firmly established as a profession. However, compared to the social awareness, the recognition and utilization within the police is not high. In this study, we tried to identify factors affecting the intention to use profiling by identifying the perception of investigators who request and use profiling from a profiler when a violent incident occurs. To this end, the relationship between the perception of the importance of factors considered by investigators in the criminal investigation process and the attitude toward profiling on the intention to use profiling was verified through the path model. As a result of a survey of 340 police investigators, the investigator's perception of the importance of investigation elements was divided into two factors: the importance of normative investigative elements (evidence collection and legal judgment, etc.) and factual investigative elements (criminal analysis, criminal information system analysis, etc.). Among them, the importance of factual investigative elements were found to have a positive effect on the intention to use it by mediating the attitude toward profiling. On the other hand, in the case of the importance of normative investigative elements, it was found to have a negative effect on the attitude toward profiling. These results suggest that the perception that investigators have about investigation, which is their main work area, plays a role in determining whether to request profiling as well as attitude towards profiling. Based on the research results, strategies necessary to activate the use of profiling were discussed.

  • Research on sex offense has shown that sex offenders are very heterogeneous. Sex offenders are heterogeneous in their probability of risk of recidivism. Some sex offenders are known to be much higher in their tendencies to reactivate than others. The study examined the predictive and explanatory power of static and dynamic risk factors in STATIC-99 and HAGSOR-Dynamic which have been used in Korean correctional facilities since 2014. STATIC-99 and HAGSOR-Dynamic showed moderate predictive accuracy for all crimes(AUC = .737, AUC = .597, respectively, ps < .001). However, when examining sex crime alone, only STATIC-99 predicted recidivism significantly(AUC = .743, p < .001). The incremental predictive power of HAGSOR-Dynamic was confirmed; the explanatory power of Model 2 comprising both static and dynamic risk factors were significant beyond Model 1 comprising only static factors(∆χ2= 12.721, p < .001), but this tendency was only applied to the model of all crimes. These findings were discussed with implications of practicing the sex offender assessment and treatment.

  • This study examined characteristics and judges' judgments regarding sexual violence cases against individuals with intellectual disabilities by analyzing total 716 cases of court decision. Of 716 cases, 6.0% sentenced not guilty, 53.5% imprisonment, 36.7% suspended sentence. More than half of the victims had experienced sexual assault more than one time with the tendency of repeating being higher when the accused were relatives or acquaintances to the victims. In half of the total cases, the victims were not able to specify the time of incidents. Only in 20% of the cases, there was actual compulsion but in the remaining cases, there was no clear coercion used during the crimes. There are three issues regarding court's decision of sexual assault case against individuals with intellectually disabilities; (1) credibility of victims' statement, (2) inability of resist during the crimes, and (3) whether the accused were aware of the victims's disabilities. In the judgment of credibility of statement, consistency of statement was the criterion that was used most frequently, being followed by specificity of statement, motivation for false accusation, cognitive capacity of victim, and reports of statement validity analysis in the order. The most frequently used criterion of inability to resist was the victim's statement and attitude, followed by the statement and attitude of the accused, the victim's knowledge and understanding of sexuality in the order. Regarding to the awareness of disabilities on the part of the accused, the statement and attitude of the accused was most frequently used, the victims' communicative abilities, duration of relationship, and daily life competence in the order. There were no differences in the rulings and issues according to levels of disabilities and gender. When victims were under 13 credibility of statement became more argues but the awareness of disabilities less frequently than the cases of victims who were 13 or older.

  • Background: Antibiotic resistance is a significant public health concern around the globe. Antimicrobial peptides exhibit broad-spectrum and efficient antibacterial activity with an added advantage of low drug resistance. The higher water content and 3D network structure of the hydrogels are beneficial for maintaining antimicrobial peptide activity and help to prevent degradation. The antimicrobial peptide released from hydrogels also hasten the local wound healing by promoting epithelial tissue regeneration and granulation tissue formation. Objective: This study aimed at developing sodium alginate based hydrogel loaded with a novel antimicrobial peptide Chol-37(F34-R) and to investigate the characteristics in vitro and in vivo as an alternative antibacterial wound dressing to treat infectious wounds. Methods: Hydrogels were developed and optimized by varying the concentrations of crosslinkers and subjected to various characterization tests like cross-sectional morphology, swelling index, percent water contents, water retention ratio, drug release and antibacterial activity in vitro, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected wound mice model in vivo. Results: The results indicated that the hydrogel C proved superior in terms of cross-sectional morphology having uniformly sized interconnected pores, a good swelling index, with the capacity to retain a higher quantity of water. Furthermore, the optimized hydrogel has been found to exert a significant antimicrobial activity against bacteria and was also found to prevent bacterial infiltration into the wound site due to forming an impermeable barrier between the wound bed and external environment. The optimized hydrogel was found to significantly hasten skin regeneration in animal models when compared to other treatments in addition to strong inhibitory effect on the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α). Conclusions: Our results suggest that sodium alginate -based hydrogels loaded with Chol-37(F34-R) hold the potential to be used as an alternative to conventional antibiotics in treating infectious skin wounds.
