In this paper, a new decoupling technique for a flyback inverter using an active power decoupling circuit with auxiliary winding and a novel switching pattern is proposed. The conventional passive power decoupling method is applied to control Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) efficiently by attenuating double frequency power pulsation on the photovoltaic (PV) side. In this case, decoupling capacitor for a flyback inverter is essentially required large electrolytic capacitor of milli-farads. However using the electrolytic capacitor have problems of bulky size and short life-span. Because this electrolytic capacitor is strongly concerned with the life-span of an AC module system, an active power decoupling circuit to minimize input capacitance is needed. In the proposed topology, auxiliary winding defined as a Ripple port will partially cover difference between a PV power and an AC Power. Since input capacitor and auxiliary capacitor is reduced by Ripple port, it can be replaced by a film capacitor. To perform the operation of charging/discharging decoupling capacitor $C_x$, a novel switching sequence is also proposed. The proposed topology is verified by design analysis, simulation and experimental results.

For passive power factor correction, the valley fill circuit approach is attractive for low power applications because of low cost, high efficiency, and simple circuit design. However, to vouch for the product quality, two dc-link capacitors in the valley fill circuit should be selected to withstand the peak rectified ac input voltage. The common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) choke should be used to suppress the electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise, thereby resulting in large size volume product. This paper presents the practical design and implementation of a valley fill flyback converter with reduced dc link capacitors and EMI magnetic volumes. By using the proposed over voltage protection circuit, dc-link capacitors in the valley fill circuit can be selected to withstand half the peak rectified ac input voltage, and the proposed CM/DM choke can be successfully adopted. The proposed circuit effectiveness is shown by simulation and experimentally verified by a 78W prototype.
This paper proposes a power conditioning system (PCS) for distributed photovoltaic (PV) applications using an asymmetric cascaded multilevel inverter with a single PV source. One of the main disadvantages of the cascaded multilevel inverters in PV systems is the requirement of multiple isolated DC sources. Using multiple PV strings leads to a compromise in either the voltage balance of individual H-bridge cells or the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation due to localized variations in atmospheric conditions. The proposed PCS uses a single PV source with a flyback DC-DC converter to facilitate a reduction of the required DC sources and to maintain the voltage balance during MPPT operation. The flyback converter is used to provide input for low-voltage H-bridge cells which processes only 20% of the total power. This helps to minimize the losses occurring in the proposed PCS. Furthermore, transient analyses and controller design for the proposed PCS in both the stand-alone mode and the grid-connection mode are presented. The feasibility of the proposed PCS and its control scheme have been tested using a 1kW hardware prototype and the obtained results are presented.
For the purpose of designing an intrinsic safety Flyback converter with minimal output voltage ripple based on a specified output current, this paper first classified the energy transmission modes of the system into three sorts, namely, the Complete Inductor Supply Mode-CCM (CISM-CCM), the Incomplete Inductor Supply Mode-CCM (IISM-CCM) and the Incomplete Inductor Supply Mode-DCM (IISM-DCM). Then, the critical secondary self-inductance assorting the three modes are deduced and expressions of the output voltage ripples (OVR) are presented. For a Flyback converter with constant loads and switching frequency, it is shown that the output voltage ripple in the CISM-CCM is the smallest and that it has no relationship with the secondary self-inductance. Otherwise, the OVR of the other two modes are bigger than the previously mentioned one. It is concluded that the critical inductance between the CISM-CCM and the IISM-CCM is the minimal secondary self-inductance to ensure the smallest output voltage ripple. At last, a design method to guarantee the minimum OVR within the scales of the input voltage and load are analyzed, and the minimum secondary self-inductance is proposed to minimize the OVR. Simulations and experiments are given to verify the results.
Compared with Si MOSFETs, the GaN FET has many advantages in a wide band gap, high saturation drift velocity, high critical breakdown field, etc. This paper compares the electrical properties of GaN FETs and Si MOSFETs. The soft-switching condition and power loss analysis in a flyback-forward high gain DC/DC converter with a GaN FET is presented in detail. In addition, a comparison between GaN diodes and Si diodes is made. Finally, a 200W GaN FET based flyback-forward high gain DC/DC converter is established, and experimental results verify that the GaN FET is superior to the Si MOSFET in terms of switching characteristics and efficiency. They also show that the GaN diode is better than the Si diode when it comes to reverse recovery characteristics.
The winding loss analysis of a flyback transformer is difficult and ambiguous because the primary side current and the secondary side current differs both in shape and phase, especially for DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) operation. Meanwhile, the fringing field caused by the air gaps further makes the traditional 1-D loss analysis model not directly applicable. The paper gives a thorough investigation into the phase shift of winding currents, which indicates that the phase shift of the high order harmonics is still close to $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase. Based on the analysis, a simplified 2-D winding loss analytical model for flyback transformers considering the effects of low order harmonics is proposed. By neglecting the y components of the fringing field, the proposed model has an acceptable accuracy and a simple form that is similar to the conventional 1-D model. The power loss calculated with the proposed analysis model is verified by FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulations and experimental results.

In this paper, a high frequency flyback type zero voltage soft switching PWM DC-DC converter using IGBTs is proposed. Effective applications for this power converter can be found in auxiliary power supplies of rolling stock transportation and electric vehicles. This power converter is basically composed of active power switches and a flyback high frequency transformer. In addition to these, passive lossless snubbers with power regeneration loops for energy recovery, consisting of a three winding auxiliary high frequency transformer, auxiliary capacitors and diodes are introduced to achieve zero voltage soft switching from light to full load conditions. Furthermore, this power converter has some advantages such as low cost circuit configuration, simple control scheme and high efficiency. Its operating principle is described and to determine circuit parameters, some practical design considerations are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed power converter is evaluated and compared with the hard switching PWM DC-DC converter from an experimental point of view and the comparative electromagnetic conduction and radiation noise characteristics of both DC-DC power converter circuits are also depicted.
Many industrial regions has used and extended the application of LED driver because of many advantage. Specially, due to the simplicity, miniaturization and power density, the flyback converter is selected by a lot of power engineer. Also, the electrolytic capacitor in this converter is used for the constant DC voltage of the converter because of the sufficient capacitance and the economic price. However, because of the characteristics of the electrolytic capacitor and ripple currents on the converter. the expected lifetime of the LED driver is more and more shorted. In this paper, a single-stage CCM PFC flyback converter with the film capacitor is suggested to extended the lifetime of the LED driver. In addition, the proposed converter with the LC filter is decreased the ripple current of the converter output.

Recently, the LED(Light Emitting Diode) is expected to replace conventional lamps including incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps for some general illumination application, due to some obvious features such as high luminous efficiency, safety, long life, environment-friendly characteristics and so on. To drive the LED, a single stage PFC(Power Factor Correction) flyback converter has been adopted to satisfy the isolation, PFC and low cost. The conventional flyback LED driver has the serious disadvantage of high 120Hz output current ripple caused by the PFC operation. To overcome this drawback, a new PFC flyback with low 120Hz output current ripple is proposed in this paper. It is composed of 2 power stages, the DCM(Discontinuous Conduction Mode) flyback converter for PFC and BCM(Boundary Conduction Mode) boost converter for tightly regulated LED current. Since the link capacitor is located in the secondary side, its voltage stress is small. Moreover, since the driver is composed of 2 power stages, small output filter and link capacitor can be used. Especially, since the flyback is operated at DCM, the PFC can be automatically obtained and thus, an additional PFC IC is not necessary. Therefore, only one control IC for BCM boost converter is required. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a prototype of 24W LED driver are presented.
