  • The effect of the addition of various fluoreides on the mullitization of Korean crude kaolin was studied by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopic methods. Kaolin without any addition of fluoreides began to be transformed into the mullite at 1, 10$0^{\circ}C$. Mullite peaks were discernible in the X-ray diffraction patterns of the specimens which contained fluorides equivalent to about 2 wt % fluorine, and which were sintered at 1, 05$0^{\circ}C$. The higher the concentration of fluorine in kaolin, the lower was the initiatinig temperature of mullitization. Experiments , for example, showed that mullite could be formed at 95$0^{\circ}C$ from kaolin mixed with 3.4% fluorine. Of the fluoride, addtives, sodiumsiliconfluoride $(Na_2SiF_6)$ was must effective in mullite formation of kaolin. In order of accelerating mullitization, the fluorides except $Na_2SiF_6$ could be placed in following sequence ; (1) sodium (NaF) (2) aluminium$(AlF_3)$ (3)potassium(KF) (4) ammonium$(NH_4F)$ (5) magnesium$(MgF_2)$ (6) calcium$(CaF_2)$. It was considered that the intrinsic characteristics of fluorides, such as size of ionic radiu, charge , bond strength between cation and anion, and electronegativity of cation affected millitization of halloysite, a main constituent mineral of kaolin.

  • Recently, alumina/glass composites have been applied as a substrate material for hybrid IC and LSI multi-chip packaging. In this study, the characterization of sodium borosilicate glasses containing NaF and $AlF_3$ and the preparation of the resulted glass/alumina composites have been examined and the effect of the addition of fluorides on the thermal. and dielectric properties of the sintered composites have been studied. The sintering temperature of specimens was lowered by about 100-$150^{\circ}C$ by the addition of fluorine compared with the specimens without fluorine. The specimens containing fluorine showed slightly lower dielectric constants than those of the specimens without fluorine.

  • S-Benzylthiuronium chloride reacts with ethylene glycol, derived from hydrolysis of the fluorides, to produce a crystalline substances. Using this, the fluorides can be indentified by measuring melting point. And when the zirconium-alizarin solution reacts with ethylenefluoro hydrin or ${\beta}-fluoroethyl$ acetate, the red-violet color disappears to produce a yellow dye, which exhibits absorption maximum at about $530\;m{\mu}$ using the 250-microgram standard. Using these properties, the fluorine compounds can be determined conveniently by this method.

  • Nursing teachers at elementary schools in Seoul were surveyed to determine their sources of information about oral health and their knowledge and attitudes about dental diseases and disease prevention. Questionaires were completed by 305 school nursing teachers. The questionaire included 8 items: demographic characteristics of the study population, sources of oral health information, reasons for maintaining good oral hygiene, ranking of methods of caries prevention in children, knowledge about fluorides, percieved effectiveness of fluorides for children, knowledge about periodontal disease, and the role of school nursing teachers in promoting oral health. Major findings are as follows: 1. The most frequently cited sources of information about dental health were continuing education courses(69.8%). 2. Most respondents had old concepts about the reasons for maintaining good oral hygiene. 3. Elementary school nursing teachers' knowledge about fluorides and preventive methods of caries and periodontal disease was found to be incomplete and sometimes inaccurate. 4. Respondents were likely to agree to accept roles that promote oral health except the supervising of fluoride mouthrinsing. Thus, it was considered that cooperation of all school members is necessary for improving oral health status by following fluoride mouthrinsing

  • The remelting for recycling or thin aluminum scrap, such as aluminum chip generally involves melting of these pieces submerged in molten salt flux. In this study, the effects of salt flux compositions and alloying elements on the aluminum dropletscoalescence and oxide film removal were studied in 99.8%Al, Al-1.01%Cu, Al-1.03%Si, and Al-1.38%Mg alloys as a function of holding time at $740^{\circ}C$ Salt fluxes based on NaCl-KCl(1:1) with addition of 5wt.% fluorides(NaF, $Na_3AlF_6$, $CaF_2$) or 5 wt.% chloride($MgCl_2$, $AlCl_3$) were used. The experimental results show that NaCl-KCl(1:1) with addition of 5 wt.% fluorides exhibits better coalescence ability than that with chlorides. The oxide film is not removed by NaCl-KCl(1:1) with addition of 5 wt.%chlorides, while it is removed by NaCl-KCl(1:1) with addition of 5 wt.% fluorides. The aluminum droplets coalescence and oxide film removal by salt fluxes are related to interfacial tension tension between metal and salt flux.

  • The aromatic fluorination method involving the acid-catalyzed decomposition of a triazene in an ionic liquid is a very convenient and efficient way to prepare a variety of aromatic fluorides in a lab-scale. It should be particularly useful for the preparation aryl fluorides substituted with electron withdrawing substituents. Fluorination of triazene 1 (1.0 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (1.2 mmol) in an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][$BF_4$], 2.5 mL) proceeds very smoothly at 80 ${^{\circ}C}$ with or without an external source of fluoride, providing 73% yield in 30 min. Unlike diazonium salts, triazene precursors are stable enough to be stored for a long period of time without a noticeable decomposition.

  • Inorganic chemical treated wood was prepared by impregnation of calcium or magnesium chloride ($CaCl_2$ or $MgCl_2$) solution and immersion in saturated solution of ammonium fluoride ($NH_4F$) as a reactant in order to make an introduction of a refractory fluorides with fungicidal and insecticidal effects in wood. The weight percent gains (WPGs) were increased with increase in concentration of calcium chloride or magnesium chloride solution, and were higher in treatment with calcium chloride than with magnesium chloride. Inorganic substances were produced mainly in the lumina of tracheides. These substances were proved to be the calcium fluoride or magnesium fluoride by the energy dispersive X-ray analyzer in conjunction with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX). The treated wood showed good decay resistance because the weight losses were hardly occurred by the test fungi such as Tyromyces palustris and Trametes versicolor. The fire resistance effect was superior to the treated wood compared with that of the untreated wood.
