A numerical model for fluid-structure interactions (abbr. FSI) is presented in the context of sloshing effects in movable, partially filled tanks to improve understanding of interactions between the fluid and the dynamics of a tank flexibly attached to a vehicle. The purpose of this model is to counteract the penalizing impact of the added mass effect on classical partitioned FSI coupling scheme: the proposed investigation is based on an added mass corrected version of the classical strongly coupled partitioned scheme presented in (Song et al. 2013). Results show that this corrected version systematically allows convergence to the coupled solution. In the rare cases where convergence is already obtained, the corrected version significantly reduces the number of iterations required. Finally, it is shown that the convergence limit imposed by added mass effect for the non-corrected coupling scheme, is directly dependent on the aspect ratio of the fluid domain and highly related to the precision order of the temporal discretization scheme.

The aim of this study is to develop a semi-analytical method to investigate fluid-structure coupling of concentric double shells with different lengths and elastic behaviours. Co-axial shells constitute a cylindrical circular container and a baffle submerged inside the stored fluid. The container shell is made of functionally graded materials with mechanical properties changing through its thickness continuously. The baffle made of steel is fixed along its top edge and submerged inside fluid such that its lower edge freely moves. The developed approach is verified using a commercial finite element computer code. Although the model is presented for a specific case in the present work, it can be generalized to investigate coupling of shell-plate structures via fluid. It is shown that the coupling between concentric shells occurs only when they vibrate in a same circumferential mode number, n. It is also revealed that the normalized vibration amplitude of the inner shell is about the same as that of the outer shell, for narrower radial gaps. Moreover, the natural frequencies of the fluid-coupled system gradually decrease and converge to the certain values as the gradient index increases.

A simply supported pipe conveying fluid and the moving masses upon it constitute this vibrational system. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influence of the velocity and the inertia force of the moving masses and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipw by numerical method. The velocities of fluid flow are considered within its critical values of the simply supported pipe without the moving masses upon it. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe are inspected too. The dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe conveying fluid is increased by a coupling of the moving masses and the velocities of the moving masses and the fluid flow. When four or five regular interval masses move on the simply supported pipe conveying fluid, the amplitude of the simply supported pipe conveying fluid is small at low velocity of the masses, but at high velocity of the masses the deflection of midspan of the pipe is increased by coupling with the numbers and magnitude of the masses. The time which produce the maximum dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe is delayed according to the increment of the number of moving masses.

In this study the fluid-solid coupling(sloshing) behavior of the tanker-lorry during turning are investigated numerically. The ALE numerical method is used as sloshing analysis algorithm and numerical simulation is conducted for the various fluid filling height 25%, 50% and 75%. The forces for radial and vertical direction are calculated and compared for various fluid-filling heights. From the analysis results, in case of 25% filling, the sloshing effect is the most highest.
The plate-type fuel assembly adopted in nuclear research reactor suffers from complicated effect induced by non-uniform irradiation, which might affect its stress conditions, mechanical behavior and thermal-hydraulic performance. A reliable numerical method is of great importance to reveal the complex evolution of mechanical deformation, flow redistribution and temperature field for the plate-type fuel assembly under non-uniform irradiation. This paper is the first part of a two-part study developing the numerical methodology for the thermal-fluid-structure coupling behaviors of plate-type fuel assembly under irradiation. In this paper, the thermal-fluid-structure coupling methodology has been developed for plate-type fuel assembly under non-uniform irradiation condition by exchanging thermal-hydraulic and mechanical deformation parameters between Finite Element Model (FEM) software and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software with Mesh-based parallel Code Coupling Interface (MpCCI), which has been validated with experimental results. Based on the established methodology, the effects of non-uniform irradiation and fluid were discussed, which demonstrated that the maximum mechanical deformation with irradiation was dozens of times larger than that without irradiation and the hydraulic load on fuel plates due to differential pressure played a dominant role in the mechanical deformation.
The presence of the pore fluid strongly influences the reponse of the soil subjected to external loading and in many cases increases the risk of final failure. In this paper, we propose the use of a discrete beam lattice model with the aim to investigate the coupling effects of the solid and fluid phase on the response and failure mechanisms in the saturated soil. The discrete cohesive link lattice model used in this paper, is based on inelastic Timoshenko beam finite elements with enhanced kinematics in axial and transverse direction. The coupling equations for the soil-pore fluid interaction are derived from Terzaghi's principle of effective stresses, Biot's porous media theory and Darcy's law for fluid flow through porous media. The application of the model in soil mechanics is illustrated through several numerical simulations.
The present paper deals with the analysis of water tank with elastic separator wall. Both fluid and structure are discretized and modeled by eight node-elements. In the governing equations, pressure for the fluid domain and displacement for the separator wall are considered as nodal variables. A method namely, direct coupled for the analysis of water tank has been carried out in this study. In direct coupled approach, the solution of the fluid-structure system is accomplished by considering these as a single system. The hydrodynamic pressure on tank wall is presented for different lengths of tank. The results show that the magnitude of hydrodynamic pressure is quite large when the distances between the separator wall and tank wall are relatively closer and this is due to higher rotating tendency of fluid and the higher sloshed displacement at free surface.

The present works are the theoretical results of the study to develope a damping flexible coupling which has a high performance of control for the torsional vibrations of power shafts in a large machinery. It is established the analysis scheme of the multiple-leaf spring, to obtain the static coefficient of stiffness of the coupling. Also, the dynamic coefficient of stiffness and the damping coefficient of the coupling are indentified through the flow analysis for a induced flow of working fluid by the deflection of multiple-leaf springs. This paper dealt with damping contributions by the friction between each plate of the multiple-leaf spring. In this paper, it is found that the dynamic characteristics of the damping flexible coupling are strongly dependent on the stiffness and the number of the multiple-leaf spring, and also vary with the viscosity of working fluid and the vibration speed of the inner star.
In this paper the unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with large structural displacement are solved by partitioned solution approaches in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element framework. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme. Both a rigid body and a geometrically nonlinear solid are considered as the structural models. The latter is solved by Newton-Raphson procedure. The equation governing the structural motion is advanced by Newmark-${\beta}$ method in time. The dynamic mesh is updated by using moving submesh approach that cooperates with the ortho-semi-torsional spring analogy method. A mass source term (MST) is introduced into the CBS scheme to satisfy geometric conservation law. Three partitioned coupling strategies are developed to take FSI into account, involving the explicit, implicit and semi-implicit schemes. The semi-implicit scheme is a mixture of the explicit and implicit coupling schemes due to the fluid projection splitting. In this scheme MST is renewed for interfacial elements. Fixed-point algorithm with Aitken's ${\Delta}^2$ method is carried out to couple different solvers within the implicit and semi-implicit schemes. Flow-induced vibrations of a bridge deck and a flexible cantilever behind an obstacle are analyzed to test the performance of the proposed methods. The overall numerical results agree well with the existing data, demonstrating the validity and applicability of the present approaches.

A structural-acoustic coupling problem involving fluid in a cavity divided with flexible walls and porous materials is investigated in this paper. In many practical problems, the use of finite elements to discretize the fluid region leads to large stiffness and mass matrices. But, since the acoustic boundary element discretization requires to put elements only on the surface of structure, the size of matrices is reduced considerably. Here, we developed a numerical analysis program for the structural-acoustic coupling problems of the multi-region cavity, using boundary elements for the fluid regions and finite elements for the structure. By considering sound transmission through layered systems placed in a cavity, the accuracy of the coupled acoustical-structural finite element model has been verified by comparing its transmission loss predictions with analytical sloutions. Example problems are included to investigate the characteristics of the multi-region structural-acoustic coupling system with porous material.
