  • The fundamental fluid mechanics associated with the rotation of a smooth plane disk enclosed within a cylindrical chamber have been studied experimentally. In order to acquire systematic information pertinent to this problem torque and friction loss data were obtained over a wide range of disk Reynolds numbers for axial clearance-disk radius ratio H/R from 0.025 to 0.2 and radial tip gap-disk radius ratio s/R from 0.021 to 0.105. Loss analysis of hard disk drive (HDD) is presented to describe the contribution of windage loss of a rotating disk. The minimum loss form factor of HDD can be obtained from this analysis at each operation conditions.

  • An experimental study has been carried out in a supersonic blow-down wind tunnel for examining the influence of streamwise vortices on normal shock-wave/boundary layer interaction. It has been reported by the earlier investigator the streamwise vortices generated by the blowing jets can significantly suppress the shock-induced separation and reduce the wave drag. The blowing jets generate the streamwise vortices with 45$^{\circ}$ angle in the spanwise direction. The shock waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system. Appropriate measurement systems are provided for the characterization of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The chamber pressure ratio and blowing pressure ratio are varied from 1.5 to 2.4 and 1.0 to 2.0 respectively.

  • This paper presents analysis of the flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no sweepback. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of inviscid analysis with finite element method. It can be concluded that the agreement is good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

  • The phase-change transformation processes are relevant in many engineering applications. In particular, this phenomenon plays an important role in the extraction and fabrication operations in the metallurgical industry. The control of the heat transfer and fluid flow patterns is important to achieve casting quality and competitive production times. In the present study, a simple finite-element algorithm is developed for solid-liquid phase change problems. Natural convection in the liquid phase due to the temperature dependency of water density is considered by a numerical model. The predictions are compared with measurements by the particle image velocimetry(PIV). to show that the calculation results are in good agreement with the experiment results.

  • A numerical method for a wave diffraction problem in three-dimensional channels is developed. The physical models are various shapes of channel connected to the open sea. When a ship or an offshore structure is moored in various configurations of channel connected to an open sea, the prediction of the hydrodynamic force exerting on the moored ship could be important for the prediction of its motion. It is assumed that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and its motion is irrotational. From the continuity equation, the Laplace equation can be obtained as the governing equation. The surface tension at free surface is neglected, and wave amplitude is assumed to be small compared to the wave length. Then the free surface condition can be linearized. The numerical method used here is the localized finite element method based on a variational formulation

  • A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code with transition prediction model is developed and the computational results on an oscillating airfoil are compared with the experimental data for OA209 airfoil. An approximated eN method that can predict transition onset points and the length of transition region is directly applied to the RANS code. The hysteresis loop in dynamic stall is compared for the computational results using transition prediction and fully turbulent models with the experimental data. Results with transition prediction show more correlation with the experimental data than the fully turbulent computation.

  • Since MEMS based micro actuators or generating devices showed high efficiency per volume, plenty of research are ongoing. Among them, MEMS based millimeter-scale micro gas turbine is one of the most powerful item for replacing chemical batteries. However, due to MEMS manufacturing technique, it is very difficult that makes wide turbine bearing area. It causes low DN number, so sufficient bearing force is hard to achieve. Thus, the most important issue on micro gas turbine is to design the proper bearing which can keep rotor stable during operation. In order to that, micro-scale gas-lubricated bearing is generally used. In this paper, basic feasibility study of thrust bearing of 10mm diameter turbine is described. Thrust bearing is hydrostatic gas-lubricated type. Numerical simulation is performed with ANSYS CFX 11.0 which is commercial numerical tool. Relationship between bearing inlet pressure and mass flow rate and bearing force is figured while changing bearing gap and number of capillaries. The simulation results will be used for further design of micro gas turbine.

  • A great deal of exhaust gas inside a combustion room goes out through exhaust pipe but residual gas, is called 'Blow by gas', enters the crankcase through a small gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. Here, if the crankcase isn't vented, this causes many bad effects such as lubricant oil contamination, corrosion by that and crankcase explosion by rising pressure. So most automobiles are constituted with a PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system to prevent previous problems. PCV valve is the most important part in this ventilation system. When companies are manufacturing new cases, engineers are designing it depending on their experiments than theoretical knowledges. Much efforts and times are needed for new development. This study will show quantitative results to increase the possibilities.

  • Noise cause is dividing to fluid noise by exhaust flow of fan and vibration noise by rotational vibration of motor. Until now, measuring method has been used to measure vibration by the accelerometer, this method has been not measured for the vibration in some parts of brush and commutator because of motor construction. This research was purposed on the accurate analysis. using laser vibration analyzer, of noise cause against the difficult part in old times. By using this measured data, we would like to use for the design of silent motor.

  • This study has been focused on the development of automatic bottle air rinser. It is designed to rinse clean empty bottles prior to filling. The bottles are automatically indexed beneath an air nozzle that has both a clean airjet and vacuum source. The bottle is first given a burst of clean air to loosen any particles from the wall of the bottle. A vacuum sequence follows which removes all particulates into a self contained filter unit. In order to the provide the desired function, analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using FLUENT and CATIA software. The final results of analysis are applied to the design of automatic bottle rinser and the machine is successfully developed.
