Vortex-induced vibrations are a type of flow-induced vibrations caused by alternating lift forces. With increasing demand for renewable energy, the application of vortex-induced vibrations to renewable energy has been widely studied. Vortex-induced vibrations for aquatic clean energy (VIVACE) converter is a renewable energy device that generates electricity from rivers or oceans using vortex-induced vibrations. To increase the design life and power harnessing capacity of the VIVACE converter, the estimation of fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations is essential. Herein, vortex-induced vibrations were experimentally tested, and their amplitude and frequency response were measured. The amplitude results showed four different branches: initial branch, upper branch, lower branch, and desynchronization range. According to the fluid force coefficient results, the maximum lift coefficient occurred at the upper branch. Additionally, a mathematical model is proposed to estimate fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations without using measurement devices. This mathematical model enables the estimation of fluid force coefficients and phase lag using amplitude and frequency response of vortex-induced vibrations.
This work presents results of finite element analysis of isothermal incompressible creeping viscoelastic flows with the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the Leonov model especially for the planar geometry with singular comers in the domain. In the case of 4:1 contraction flow, for all 5 meshes we have obtained solutions over the Deborah number of 100, even though there exists slight decrease of convergence limit as the mesh becomes finer. From this analysis, singular behavior of the comer vortex has been clearly seen and proper interpolation of variables in terms of the logarithmic transformation is demonstrated. Solutions of 4:1:4 contraction/expansion flow are also presented, where there exists 2 singular comers. 5 different types spatial resolutions are also employed, in which convergent solutions are obtained over the Deborah number of 10. Although the convergence limit is rather low in comparison with the result of the contraction flow, the results presented herein seem to be the only numerical outcome available for this flow type. As the flow rate increases, the upstream vortex increases, but the downstream vortex decreases in their size. In addition, peculiar deflection of the streamlines near the exit comer has been found. When the spatial resolution is fine enough and the Deborah number is high, small lip vortex just before the exit comer has been observed. It seems to occur due to abrupt expansion of the elastic liquid through the constriction exit that accompanies sudden relaxation of elastic deformation.
To investigate the motion-induced aeroelastic effects (or aerodynamic feedback effects) on a square cylinder in uniform flow, a series of wind tunnel tests involving the pressure measurement of a rigid model (RM) and simultaneous measurement of the pressure and vibration of an aeroelastic model (AM) have been systematically carried out. More specifically, the aerodynamic feedback effects on the structural responses, on the mean and root-mean-square wind pressures, on the power spectra and coherence functions of wind pressures at selected locations, and on the aerodynamic forces were investigated. The results indicated the vibration in the lock-in range made the shedding vortex more coherent and better organized, and hence presented unfavorable wind-induced effects on the structure. Whereas the vibration in the non-lock-in range generally showed insignificant effects on the flow structures surrounding the square cylinder.
This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.

Vortex generation mechanism by inhibitor in a solid rocket motor have been investigated by 3D Large Eddy Simulation turbulent model. Most of the result of the present study are in good agreement with experimental data and previous numerical calculation. Vortex generation and breakdown behind inhibitor are periodically observed between inhibitor and nozzle head by flow-acoustic coupling mechanism. Vortex generation frequency is the same as the second-mode frequency in the motor. The roll shape vortex generation behind inhibitor induces non-uniform flow field at the nozzle entrance and its throat.

Heat-transfer enhancement is seeked through modifications of fin surface. Real life plate-fin heat exchangers have complex three-dimensional geometries. Fins can have arrays of dimples and are attached to rows of penetrating tubes. To isolate the effect of surface modification, we model the real flow by a two-dimensional channel flow with a dimple on one side. The flow is analysed by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation by a finite volume method on a generalized boundary-fitted coordinate. Results show a trapped vortex inside the dimple for all cases computed. Local maximum of Nusselt number occurs near the downstream end of the dimple, due to such a vortex. Location of the vortex does not change with respect to the wall temperature change, but moved downstream when Reynolds number increases. This, together with the results that in all cases vortex core is somewhat downstream of the dimple center, suggests that the mean flow above continuously feeds the kinetic energy to the recirculating flow. Heat transfer enhancement and pressure losses are studied through analysing the relevant dimensionless parameters like, Nusselt number and friction factor. In all cases computed, dimpled channel flow experiences less pressure loss than two-dimensional Poiseuille flow.
The Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof surface of a low-rise building has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimerty) technique. The scaled model of TTU building with 1:92 scaling ratio was used. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the length of the model was $1.96{\times}10^5$. When the angle of attack for the building model is $45^{\circ}$, the conical vortices are occurred symmetrically and the center of vortices are changed with respect to the angle of the approaching flow. The rotating direction of the conical vortices found to be counter-rotating. The secondary vortex motions are investigated using the instantaneous flow field data.

This study deals with an investigation on the tip vortex generated by an elliptic wing with section shapes of NACA 0020. The flow structure on the wing surface is investigated by using tufts test as well as observing the cavitation pattern. The surface pressure on a foil surface is measured to complement the visualized flow field. Results show that a strong spanwise pressure gradient is a definite contributor on the formation of tip vorex, and the fluids from both sides contribute to the evolutionary process of tip vortex. On the other hand, a series of experiments are conducted to investigate the detailed structure of tip-vortex at various angles of attack. The tip-vortex formation and development are observed by producing a cavitation, and then by a laser sheet technique in conduction with a dye injection method. The shape of tip-vortex and the distance between a vortex core and the trailing vortex sheet are found to vary with the angle of attack. Overall features of tip flow are evaluated to complement the vortex model based on inviscid theory.
The flow patterns around multi-circular cylinders are studies, in order to obtain a global view on the structure of wave control and circulation of sea flow in coastal region. The flow force depends upon the vortex shedding exerted on the structure, especially how the vortex shedding affects the erosion when the structure sets on the sand bottom. Therefore, it is necessary that the flow pattern be hocked. In order to simulate the flow around multi-circular cylinders, the CFX and FLUENT of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program were used and compared with the experimental results of the flow visualization installation. The phenomena of flow around the multi-cylinders will be applied to fundamental data for predicting the flow force acting against the structure, erosion and sedimentation around cylinders in arrangement.
In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, my introduce air into pun, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. This study investigated experimentally the formation of the vortex to understand the mechanism of vortex formation and to prevent the formation of vortex in the sump model using by the model test and PIV tool. Sump model was manufactured to 1/8 scale with the drawing of W intake pumping station. from the results of model test and PIV, the vortex were occurred the in the whole section. Thus, sump model tests with the anti-vortex device might be considered to prevent the formation of vortex in the sump model.
