The two-dimensional incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid we considered in this research has rapidly oscillating initial conditions which contain both the large scale and small scale information. In order to grasp this double-scale phenomenon of the complex flow, a multiscale analysis method is developed based on the mathematical homogenization theory. For the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic Maxwell fluid, a well-posed multiscale system, including averaged equations and cell problems, is derived by employing the appropriate multiple scale asymptotic expansions to approximate the velocity, pressure and stress fields. And then, this multiscale system is solved numerically using the pseudospectral algorithm based on a time-splitting semi-implicit influence matrix method. The comparisons between the multiscale solutions and the direct numerical simulations demonstrate that the multiscale model not only captures large scale features accurately, but also reflects kinetic interactions between the large and small scale of the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid.
Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh in order to validate the code's independency of grid type. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers with no grid type dependency.
An unstructured overset mesh method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady viscous flow fields around multiple bodies in relative motion. For this purpose, a robust and fast search technique is proposed for both triangle and high-aspect ratio quadrilateral cell elements. The interpolation boundary is defined for data communication between grid systems and an interpolation method is suggested for viscous and inviscid cell elements. This method has been applied to calculate the flow fields around 2-D airfoils involving relative motion. Validations were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of unsteady time-accurate flow fields involving multiple bodies in relative motion.

A new method to improve the efficiency of a hydrogen fuel cell system was introduced by using variable sonic/supersonic ejectors. To obtain the variable area ratio of the nozzle throat to ejector throat which controls the mass flow rate of the suction flow, the ejectors used a movable cylinder inserted into a conventional ejector-diffuser system. Experiments were carried out to understand the flow characteristics inside the variable ejector system. The secondary mass flow rates of subsonic and supersonic ejectors were examined by varying the operating pressure ratio and area ratio. The results showed that the variable sonic/supersonic ejectors could control the recirculation ratio by changing the throat area ratio, and also showed that the recirculation ratio increased fur the variable sonic ejector and decreased for the variable supersonic ejector, as the throat area ratio increases.

Homogenization method is adopted to predict the permeability tenor for glass fiber plain woven fabrics. Calculating the permeability tensor numerically is an encouraging task because the permeability tensor is a key parameter in resin transfer molding (RTM). Based on multi-scale approach of the homogenization method, the permeability for the micro-unit cell within fiber tow is computed and compared with that obtained from flow analysis for the same micro-unit cell. It is found that they are in good agreement. In order to calculate the permeability tensor of macro-unit cell for the plain woven fabrics, the Stokes and Brinkman equations which describe inter-tow and intra-tow flow respectively are employed as governing equations. The effective permeabilities homogenized by considering intra-tow flow are compared with those obtained experimentally. Control volume finite element method (CVFEM) is used as a numerical method. It is shown that the asymptotic expansion homogenization method is an attractive method to predict the effective permeability for heterogeneous media.
The effects of screening hydrophones with open-cell foams for reduction of the infrasonic self-noise induced by the flow around hydrophones are investigated by at-sea experiment. Test results of the 10 ppi polyurethane open-cell foams with different thickness show that the foams of 1 cm and 3 cm thickness reduce the flow-induced self-noises up to 20 dB and 28 dB at the frequency band of 2-10 Hz, respectively.
In this study, a series of numerical simulation of dam break flow was conducted using EFDC model, and input conditions including cell size, time step, and turbulent eddy viscosity were considered to analyze parameter sensitivity. In case of coarse mesh layout, the propagated length of the shock wave front was ${\Delta}_x$ longer than that of other mesh layouts, and the velocity results showed jagged edge, which can be cured by applying fine grid mesh. Turbulent eddy viscosity influenced magnitude of the maximum velocity passing through gate up to 20% and the cell Peclet number less than 2.0 ensured no numerical oscillations.
Human, horse and rat bloods in a cylindrical chamber where flow was controlled by a stirring magnet were used for studying red blood cell aggregation. Ultrasound backscattered powers from blood were obtained from the backscattered signals measured by a 5 MHz focused transducer in a pulse-echo setup. The experimental results showed the differences in red blood cell (RBC) aggregation tendency among the three mammalian species with an order of horse > human > rat. The ultrasound backscattered power decreased with stirring speed in human and horse blood, but no variations were observed in rat blood. Sudden flow stoppage led to the slow increase of the backscattered power for human and horse blood. There was no self-aggregation tendency in rat blood. The enveloped echo images showed the spatial and temporal variations of RBC aggregations in the cylindrical chamber. These observations from the different mammalian species may give a better understanding of the mechanism of RBC aggregation.
Parametric calculation were conducted to estimate performance of variable geometry of hydrogen recirculation blower for fuel cell vehicle. The pressure rise and efficiency are effected by change of the geometric parameter of impeller and casing, and stripper clearance under various mass flow. Hydrodynamic performance were evaluated, and also the inner flow fields were investigated by CFD. Calculated results show good coincidence with experimental test results of total pressure performance. Performance of model designed by parametric calculations satisfied experimental data of verification model.
In the previous report, we described the in vivo antitumor activity of PJ-4, a protein-polysaccharide fraction prepared from the culture filtrate of an insect-born fungus, Paecilomyces tenuipes DGUM 32001. In the present study, we elucidated the immunomodulating activity of PJ-4 on the BALB/c mouse splenic lymphocytes using flow cytometrical techniques. As a result, PJ-4 was found to stimulate the lymphocytes not only to form lymphoblasts but also to express CD25 (IL-2 receptor $\alpha$ chain) molecule, which is well known as a T cell activation marker. More interestingly, its T cell stimulatory activity was more strongly exerted on CD8$^{+}$ T cells than on CD4$^{+}$ T cells. All these data suggest that PJ-4 exerts its antitumor activity at least partly through stimulation of T cells which play major roles in the cell-mediated immune system.tem.
