The objective of this study is to evaluate the flexure strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams and the effect of the adding steel fiber to flexural strength, and is to compare the proposed equation with the previous equation for predicting the flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete beams. Based on earlier published studies and tests, predictive equation is proposed for evaluating the flexural strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. The proposed equation gave good prediction for the flexural strength of the tested beams.
This paper presents an experimental study on flexural behavior of structural member enlarged with epoxy mortar system. The main test variable is flexural tensile strength. A series of 4 test beams was tested to shoe the corresponding effect of each variables on maximum load capacity, load-deflection and moment-curvature relationship, interface behavior and failure mode. The results show that the flexural tensile strength of retrofitted materials have no relation load-deflection, but to load-strain, and failure mode.
The purpose of this experimental study is to understand the flexural Behavior of structural deck plate continuous slabs (power deck plate slabs). The main variables considered in this test are thickness of the slab and the deck plate. Five specimens that have length of 600cm and width of 60cm were manufactured. Test results indicated that the ultimate flexural strength of power deck plate slabs was conservative compared to ACI flexural provisions. But, suitable arrangement of bar of top reinforcement is needed for crack control.
This study was performed to evaluate the effective analysis of flexural performance for polypropylene fiber (PF) reinforced EVA concrete that can be used in marine bridge, tunnel and agricultural structures under flexural load. The control design was applied in ready mixed concrete using 10 % fly ash of total binder weight used in batch plant. On the basis of the control mix design, there was designed mix types that contained PF ranged from 0 % to 0.5 % by volume ratio into two mix types of using 0 % and 5.0 % EVA contents of total binder weight. Before evaluating the flexural performance, we tested compressive strength and flexural strength to evaluate whether polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete could be used or not in site. The method of flexural performance evaluation was applied by ASTM C 1609. These results showed the maximum compressive strength and flexural strength was measured at each E5P1 and E5P2. Concrete reinforced with PF exhibited deflection-softening behavior. In the concrete reinforced with 0.4 % PF contents and containing 5.0 % EVA, the flexural performance was the best.
The purpose of this study is to propose new hysteretic characteristics of medium- to low-rise RC structures controlled by both shear and flexure. Through previous study, the dual lateral force-resisting system composed of shear and flexural failure members has a new failure mechanism that cooperates to enhance the flexural capacity of the flexural failure member even after the failure of the shear member, and the existing theoretical equation significantly underestimates the ultimate strength. In this study, the residual lateral strength mechanism of the dual lateral force-resisting system was analyzed, and, as a result, an equation for estimating the residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was proposed. The residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was verified in comparison with the structural testing results obtained in previous study, and the proposed residual flexural strength equation for shear-failure members was tested for reliability using FEA, and its applicable range was also determined. In addition, restoring-force characteristics for evaluating the seismic performance of the dual lateral force-resisting system (nonlinear dynamic analysis), reflecting the proposed residual flexural strength equation, were proposed. Finally, the validity of the restoring-force characteristics of RC buildings equipped with the dual lateral force-resisting system proposed in the present study was verified by performing pseudo-dynamic testing and nonlinear dynamic analysis based on the proposed restoring-force characteristics. Based on this comparative analysis, the applicability of the proposed restoring-force characteristics was verified.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the flexural strength of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and bis-acryl composite resin reinforced with polyethylene and glass fibers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three groups of rectangular test specimens (n = 15) of each of the two resin/fiber reinforcement were prepared for flexural strength test and unreinforced group served as the control. Specimens were loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture. The mean flexural strengths (MPa) was compared by one way ANOVA test, followed by Scheffe analysis, using a significance level of 0.05. Flexural strength between fiber-reinforced resin groups were compared by independent samples t-test. RESULTS. For control groups, the flexural strength for PMMA (215.53 MPa) was significantly lower than for bis-acryl composite resin (240.09 MPa). Glass fiber reinforcement produced significantly higher flexural strength for both PMMA (267.01 MPa) and bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa), but the polyethylene fibers showed no significant difference (PMMA resin-218.55 MPa and bis-acryl composite resin-241.66 MPa). Among the reinforced groups, silane impregnated glass fibers showed highest flexural strength for bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa). CONCLUSION. Of two fiber reinforcement methods evaluated, glass fiber reinforcement for the PMMA resin and bis-acryl composite resin materials produced highest flexural strength. Clinical implications. On the basis of this in-vitro study, the use of glass and polyethylene fibers may be an effective way to reinforce provisional restorative resins. When esthetics and space are of concern, glass fiber seems to be the most appropriate method for reinforcing provisional restorative resins.
In this study, we conducted a study to evaluate the more accurate mechanical properties of concrete damaged by fire. In relation to this, in this study, the results of compressive strength and biaxial flexural strength were compared for concrete that received high temperature heat. As a result, both the compressive strength and the biaxial bending strength decreased as the heating temperature increased. As a result of examining the correlation between the compressive strength and the biaxial flexural strength, the biaxial flexural strength was smaller than the compressive strength.
Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.

This study investigates the flexural properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced basalt/epoxy composites under conditions with and without moisture absorption. The basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were fabricated using 1 wt% silanized MWCNTs and kept in seawater for over 4 months. The flexural properties of the moisture absorbed specimens were evaluated and compared with those of dry specimens. The flexural properties of basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were found to decrease with moisture absorption. The flexural strength and modulus of moisture absorbed specimens were 22% and 16% lower, respectively, than those of the dry specimen. Scanning electron microscope examination of the fracture surfaces revealed that the decreases of flexural properties in the moisture absorbed specimen were due to the weakening of interfacial bonding from swelling of the epoxy matrix.
In this study, we discussed the local buckling behavior of pultruded structural flexural members. Previous works were briefly reviewed and the local buckling behavior of orthotropic box-shape flexural members was discussed. The simplified form of equation for finding the width ratio of plate element of box-shape flexural members in which all plate components buckle simultaneously was proposed and the macro flow-chart for finding local buckling strength of pultruded flexural members was also suggested. To establish the design guide line for the local buckling of pultruded flexural members, further studies need to be performed as follows; the simplified form of solutions for finding the minimum buckling coefficient of orthotropic plate with various loading and boundary conditions including rotationally restrained boundary conditions, the simplified form of equation for calculating the coefficient of restraint provided by the adjacent plate elements.
