  • Onshore great fires can normally be extinguished by firefighters using special firefighting equipment and its suitable method. However, offshore fires on the ships are to be extinguished by the crew without any supports from the onshore. Also, crews working on board are exposed to high risk of emergency evacuation due to the complicated structure arrangement of the ships and different accident types such as fire and ship collisions. As most of damage and loss of life in fire are associated with suffocation, shortening of evacuation time is an important factor to improve a survival rate. In this study, visibility in the accommodation area is analyzed by using the temperature and smoke flow which are obtained by the Fire Dynamic Simulator(FDS) as a Three-Dimensional Fire Analysis program to understand the survival rate of the crew upon the fire. The fire doors for most of ships are designed to close automatically when the fire alarm is activated. These automatic closing of the fire doors is a very effective system to delay the spread of flame and smoke flow for the unmanned spaces of the fire protected area. However, if the crew cannot escape within the estimated time, the crew inside the fire protected area will be damaged a lot. In this paper, the comparative analysis between the evacuations by using the fire door from the fire protected area and the suggested fire shielding structure in this study is carried out by the smoke flow rate and the temperature rise rate.

  • A gas chromatographic method was developed for determination of the concentration of three major polyacetylene compounds in ginseng roots---panaxynol, panaxydol and panaxytriol. The column and the detector used were an SPB-1 fused silica capillary (0.2mm i.d.$\times$30m, Supelco) and a flame ionization detector (FID). The column oven temperature was kept at $250^{\circ}C$ isothermally The retention times of panaxynol, panaxydol and panaxytriol peaks were 4.2,5.1 and 6.9 min before TMS-derivatitration and 4.5,5.4 and 7.4 min after TMS-derivatization, respectively. The minimum determinable concentrations of panaxynol, panaxydol and panaxytriol before TMS-derivatiEation were at the 20, 50 and 100 ppm levels, while the concentrations of panaxydol and panaxytriol as well as panaxynol after TMS- derivatisation could be towered to the 5 ppm level. The panaxynol, panaxydol and panaxytriol contents in red ginseng were determined by use of this method after TMS-derivatization : the amounts obtained were 724, 721 and 71$\mu\textrm{g}$/g, respectively.

  • This study proposes the experimental methods which shows various guidelines for systematic study of surface forest fuels. The thermal characteristics of surface fire fuels such as Quercus Variabilis and Pinus Densiflora fallen leaves are measured using TGA and Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter. Both of them are common species of Korean forest. Also the combustion characteristics of surface fire fuels are analysed according to the methods which are commonly used in Pool Fire analysis. The measured parameters are gas velocity, temperature, flame height, heat release rate and mass loss rate. A system is designed to simulate the surface fire. Methods and results are shown for the application of forest fire study.

  • The present paper includes recent research works on the estimation of physical properties like equivalence ratio and heat release rate of flame through chemiluminescence measurement. Modern combustion devices require a precise control to increase combustion stability as well as to suppress pollutant emissions. The determination of combustion characteristics from chemiluminescence provides practical advantages over other techniques. However, the technique is dependent on equivalence ratio, combustion pressure, inlet temperature, turbulent intensity and fuel type. The intensity ratio of $OH^*$ and $CH^*$ has a strong relation with an equivalence ratio for methane/air premixed flames. The global measurement of chemiluminescence is accepted as a good indicator for a global heat release rate.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the SDAR (solvent deasphaltene residue), which is obtained from the solvent deasphalting (SDA) process, as a pavement material. METHODS : The physical properties of the SDAR were evaluated based on its chemical composition, and asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were fabricated and used for the evaluation of mechanical properties. Firstly, the chemical composition of SARA (saturate, aromatic, resin and asphaltene) was analyzed using the TLC-FID (thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detector). Moreover, the basic material properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the penetration test, softening point test, ductility test, and PG (performance grade) grade test. The rheological properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the dynamic shear modulus ($G^*$) obtained using the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. Secondly, the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were evaluated. The compactibility was evaluated using the gyratory compacter. Moreover, the tensile strength ratio (TSR) was used for evaluating the moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures (i.e., susceptibility to pothole damage). The dynamic modulus $E^*$, which is a fundamental property of the asphalt mixture, obtained at different temperatures and loading cycles, was used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION : The SDAR shows stiffer and more brittle behavior than the conventional asphalt binder. As the application of the SDAR directly in the field may cause early failures, such as cracks on pavements, it should be applied with modifiers that can favorably modify the brittleness property of the SDAR. Therefore, if appropriate additives are applied on the SDAR, it can be used as a pavement material because of its low cost and strong resistance to rutting.

  • Electrical apparatuses for use in the presence of flammable gas atmospheres have to be specially designed to prevent them from igniting the explosive gas. Flameproof design implies that electrical components producing electrical sparks are contained in enclosures and withstand the maximum pressure of internal gas or vapours. In addition, any gaps in the enclosure wall have to designed in such a way that they will not transmit a gas explosion inside the enclosure to an explosive gas or vapours atmosphere outside it. In this study, we explained some of the most important physical mechanism of MESG(Maximum Experimental Safe Gap) that the jet of combustion products ejected through the flame gap to the external surroundings do not have an energy and temperature large enough to initiate an ignition of external gas or vapours. We measured the MESG and maximum explosion pressure of ternary gas mixtures(propane-acetylene-air) by the test method and procedure of IEC 60079-20-1:2010. As a result, the composition of propane gas that has lower explosive power than acetylene gas in the ternary gas mixtures makes greater effects on MESG and explosion pressure.

  • New definition for the interaction of flames is introduced and interacting turbulent diffusion flames issuing from two rectangular nozzles are investigated on the basis of the definition. Theoretical study through numerical model is carried out and experiment for validation is conducted. The characteristics of interaction due to the variation of major parameters such as nozzle spacing, Reynolds number and nozzle aspect ratio are studied. Results show that strong interaction occurs for small nozzle spacing, small Reynolds number and large aspect ratio. In order of their magnitude, the intensity of interactions on the individual transport mechanism is momentum, heat and mass. It is also found that interaction makes flames longer, tilted and finally merged. Increase of velocities and temperature, decrease of oxygen concentration and depression of turbulence are occurred in the region between flames.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the reforming characteristics and optimum operating condition of the plasmatron assisted $CH_4$ reforming reaction for the hydrogen-rich gas production. Also, in order to increase the hydrogen production and the methane conversion rate, parametric screening studies were conducted, in which there were the variations of the $CH_4$ flow ratio, $CO_2$ flow ratio, vapor flow ratio, mixing flow ratio and catalyst addition in reactor. High temperature plasma flame was generated by air and arc discharge. The air flow rate and input electric power were fixed 5.1 l/min and 6.4 kW, respectively. When the $CH_4$ flow ratio was 38.5%, the production of hydrogen was maximized and optimal methane conversion rate was 99.2%. Under these optimal conditions, the following synthesis gas concentrations were determined: $H_2$, 45.4%; CO, 6.9%; $CO_2$, 1.5%; and $C_2H_2$, 1.1%. The $H_2/CO$ ratio was 6.6, hydrogen yield was 78.8% and energy conversion rate was 63.6%.
