In the oriental medicine, the illness of a human being is treated properly according to the strength and weakness of his/her physical constitution. In other words, the treatment principle of the oriental medicine is to balance the functions of the weak and strong inner parts of the physical constitution which can be classified into five characteristic elements: that is, the wood, fire, earth, mental, and water. An aroma therapy, one of traditional oriental medicine, uses pertinent perfumes to strengthen weak inner parts of the body, too. Although the remedy based on the five elements (in short, five element remedy) has revealed excellent clinical effects so far, it is still believed that the remedy is rather statistical and subjective than scientific. Thus, more systematic research needs to be done to prove it. In this paper, the correlation between perfume and physical constitutions has been formulated by grasping results of EEG through stimulation of lavender oil to both mental-type and fire-type persons. Also, the possibility of application for the five element remedy has been investigated. As a result, we found that the lavender oil helped to make strong gallbladder soften for fire-type individuals and to balance weak liver and strong gallbladder for mental-type persons. This agrees well with the results of the five element remedy practiced in the oriental medicine.

본 논문은 동양의 중요사상중의 하나인 음양오행의 오행속성을 물리적으로 해석하여 사람의 오장육부의 크기와 얼굴형상에 따른 체질을 분류하였다. 이 분류에 대한 이론적 보완으로 동양최고의 의학서적으로 알려진 황제내경에 나타난 체질분류, 훈민정음에 창제 원리로 사용된 음양오행이론, 그리고 오행생식요법에서 제시한 얼굴형상등과 본 이론의 결과를 비교하였다. 그리스 철학자 엠페도클레스의 체질론이 감성연구에 대한 효시로 거론되고 있는 점을 고려할 때 동양의 전일적인 사고스시템인 음양오행에 의해 체질론에 대한 이론적 근거가 확립된다면 감성연구에 일조하는 바가 크리라 생각된다.

Objectives : Assuming that the characteristic of meridian system has been similar to this of electric potentials in human body and that measurements of electric potential at well(井穴) and sea(合穴) points in branches of the twelves meridians will be representative of measurements of the twelve meridians, to measure the electric potentials in twenty healthy volunteers when they were sleeping or waking respectively, to do significance test for electric potential of meridian system between hand and foot meridian, yin and yang meridian, exterior and interior of the body, and among the five elements. Methods : When twenty healthy volunteers were sleeping, their electric potentials of well and sea points in branches of the twelve meridians were simultaneously measured by physiograph. After a minute we measured them again, totally 5 times. And then when they were waking, their electric potentials were measured 5 times by the above method. Results : Measurements were analyzed by statistical t-test, we obtained that the left side electric potential of hand or yin meridian was significantly different from that of foot or yang meridian both sleeping and waking. The right side of electric potential was the same result as the left side's. Most of the t-test was significant between exterior and interior of the body, and among the five elements. That meaned that it was partly possible to apply the ancient theory of meridians to the study of electric potential at well and sea points in branches of the twelves meridians.

Human being can be divided into five elements in the Oriental Medicine. The remedy by using five elements constitution has been shown great effects clinically during that time. Therefore, The job design research considering Oriental Human Constitution is needed for job efficiency and safety. In This study, we examine whether the theory can be applied for job design through the experiment by 'Digital-type Speed Anticipation Reaction Tester' and suggest the desirable direction of job design.

Influnced by the official uniform system of China, the colour culture of Korea has changed with time. The ancient colour has included the philo-sophical conception as well as the meaning of thoughts. Forming its tradition, the colour has been accepted in usual life. The philosophy of the Five Element has been developed in the area of Oriental culture and it has influnced to the colour of costume. The five colours(blue, red, yellow, white and black) as the Five Elements colours have disticted the social position. Owing to the fackt, the colour costume has preserved the important meaning. In accordance with the theory of the Five Elements the five colours of costume told its purpose, social position and age. Moreover the relationship among the Five Elements, the direction and the reason have been applied to it with time. Yellow and red have been usually used by kings and high ranking officals, white has been the basic colour for traditional Korean clothes, which hs indicated the integrity symbolizing our race. The Five Elements Colours preserving the theory of Korean the Five Elements have been the conception of Korean traditional colour and they have been developing as the meaning of custom.

Five mimic-animal boxing(五禽戱, FAB) is physical fitness exercises conducted by imitating the motions of tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird, devised by the famous doctor Hwa-Ta(華陀) in the Three Kingdoms of China. FAB is one of bionic-physical and breathing exercises(傍生導引) by combined automassage as a practice for health care. Although FAB have effects of health control and medical treatment, but interrelationship of five animals(五禽) of FAB and five viscera(五臟) of five elements(五行) is complicated. So, the present was designed to investigate the progress of FAB, movement-feature of FAB, and the interrelationship of five animals and five viscera. further I will develop value by sports-treatment medicine in oriental medicine. The results were as follows ; FAB is physical exercises of dynamic exercises and new-dynamic exercises. Feature of China-FAB have each movement by imitating the motions of each animals, movements of Formosa-FAB were mixed. In philosophical viewpoint, Five animals (tiger, deer, bear, monkey, bird) were attached to metal, wood, water, earth, fire of five elements, and lung, liver, kidney, spleen, heart of five viscera. In viewpoint of breathing exercises, Five animals (tiger, deer, bear, monkey, bird) were attached to water, wood, earth, fire, metal of five elements, and kidney, liver, spleen, heart, lung of five viscera. Although FAB have effects of health control and medical treatment, FAB have indication and contraindication. Therefore, I think that mechanism of treatment should reason with Oriental medicine doctor in FAB.

The characters in animations have diverse distinctive features and personalities. These personalities and characteristics are composed of various elements such and feature, motion, conversation, and walking motion, and so on. Especially, walking motion is the basic element to express character action. And it plays a key role for expressing personalities of characters. In this paper, we classify characters in animations by distinctive feature and personality based on the cosmic dual forces and five elements theory. The relationships between personalities of characters and movements are suggested by analyzing motions of the classified characters.

Background: In contrast to the increased interest in constitutional medicine evidenced by clinical experiences, there has been no theoretical or mathematical analysis on the stability or number of constitutional types. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the stability of possible constitutional types and to find stable constitutional types based on imbalanced structure of five energy elements using mathematical analysis. Methods: For the 120 constitutional types which are possible by the imbalanced combination of five energy elements, vitality, stability and continuity were evaluated mathematically based on mutual activation and suppression between the five energy elements. Results: 10 constitutional types were derived. They had the highest vitality and stability, and they had permanent continuity, never changing their order of imbalanced structure. Conclusions: 10 constitutional types are logical and most reasonable when we classify the body types based on imbalanced structure of five energy elements.

This article examines the trend of research on mathematical modeling of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Through the search engine Google and the library search service of Kyung Hee University, papers that mathematically studied the Yin-Yang Five Elements were searched. Among them, 7 cases published in academic journals were selected and briefly mentioned in the table. And we introduced specific details about four of them. The model format expressing the five elements as a nonlinear system of differential equations was discussed and evaluated.

This study is to consider both the eastern and western concepts of colors focusing on the five colors(Blue, Red, Yellow, White, Black) derived from the principles of Yang and the Five Elements, which are the traditional philosophy of the East and to analyze the modern fashion on the basis of the theoretical background. This study is summarized in the following. The eastern color concept has been formed by the influence of the principles of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, which explain the generation and extinction of the universe. When it comes to the five colors, the symbolism of the east and west has much in common relatively. Concerning the rule of the five colors match, both the rules of the east and west are highly similar with each other. As mentioned above, the study shows that the five colors concepts and match rules between the east and west have much in common. There is a high possibility to connect the compatibility and incompatibility of the eastern five colors with scientific western theory of color harmony.
