Patents are widely used in the literature as a measure of firm-level innovation. It is regarded that patents improve a firm's operational environment and ultimately increase the value of the firm. However, the relationship between patents and firm value in Korea is under-explored in the literature due to the difficulty of constructing datasets. This paper examines whether patents in Korea increase the market value of a firm. To do this, I exploit novel data on firm-level patents and financial information of all listed Korean companies during the period of 1993-2015 and estimate the non-linear production-function type of Tobin's q equations on R&D, patents, and citations. Surprisingly, I find that patents and citations are weakly associated with firm value, while R&D is strongly associated with an increase in firm value. These results direct imply that policymakers in Korea should enhance patenting incentives to encourage firms to innovate.

Recently, Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) is essential firm activity to establish favorable firm true and sustainability management. However, there has been a controversy over the relationship between CSR and financial performance, also, it has been a little research that investigate relationship between CSR, firm reputation in firm level and firm true, firm loyalty in financial institution. This paper investigate empirically relationship between CSR activities, firm reputation and firm loyalty, moderating effect of firm true on the relationship between CSR activities, firm reputation and firm loyalty. Results were computed using SPSS 20.0 statistical analysis programs. The results are summarized as follows. First, The elements of CSR activities are divided into four factor, such as economic, ethical, consumer protection and environmental responsibilities. In the results of the analyses, consumer protection responsibility, economic reliability and business management skill positive affects the reliability of firm. Second, testing its mediating role, I use the three regression equation models by Baron and Kenny. When the mediator effect of firm true on firm loyalty was represented, the effect of CSR and firm reputation was statistically significant or diminished. Thus, the mediating role of firm true was supported. It means the higher the CSR and corporation reputation activities are, the higher the firm true is, further the higher level of firm true can enhance firm loyalty.

The study aims to answer why the previous studies find the positive or insignificant effect of the CEO's abilities on firm performance. Using 34,285 CEO-firm-year panel data from the U.S. publicly traded firms drawn from the BoardEx and EXECUXOMP database during from 1992 to 2014, the results show that the fit of the CEO's generality or specialist ability with firm strategy matters on firm performance and risk. This study computes a discrete STRATEGY composite measure to construct firm strategy types, such as Prospect or Defend and use CEOs' résumés to construct an index of general skills that are transferable across firms and industries. The results find that generalist CEOs are more suitable for prospectors than specialist CEOs. Firm performance is much better when specialist CEOs work for Defenders. Although the firm performance is better too for the generalist CEOs who fit for the Prospect strategy, the firm's risk is up too. The result suggests that firms need to consider their chosen business strategy to recruit and select CEOs Our findings provide direct evidence that the match between CEO's ability and the firm's strategy is crucial to firm performance and risk.
Using a trade policy, government can shift profits from foreign firms to domestic firms. This paper will reexamine how asymmetric information can affect the equivalence of tariff and quota in a duopoly, where one domestic firm competes with one foreign firm. It can happen that the domestic firm has informational advantage against the government. Within this framework, the domestic firm has private information about own marginal cost as well as the foreign firm's. The domestic firm would exploit the advantage to draw a favorable policy from the government. When the government is misled, social welfare would decline. This paper will guide how the government can extract information from the domestic firm by offering a menu of tariff or quota. Previous studies showed that quota demands information more than tariff. With the principle of revealed information, the domestic firm chooses tariff (quota) if the marginal cost of foreign firm is low (high). The quota level will be high (low) if the marginal cost of domestic firm is high (low). To prevent misrepresentation, the domestic firm should be charged when quota is implemented. When the quota level is low, the domestic firm is charged additionally. This paper can contribute to the literature of trade policy and information.
Purpose - This study analyzes the effect of internationalization represented as exporting on firm performance on the subject of SMEs operating in Masan Free Trade Zone which has shown poor performance recently despite its status as the oldest and largest free trade zone in Korea. We also analyze the effect of firm size on firm performance, and the moderating role of firm size in relation to internationalization and firm performance. Design/methodology - This study uses multiple regression models for unbalanced panel data as the empirical tools for the estimation of the effect that internationalization has on firm performance (ROA or ROS). Our sample consists of 91 manufacturing SMEs among all 110 companies located in Masan Free Trade Zone as of 2017. Findings - The degree of internationalization has a negative impact on firm performance. However, firm size turns out to have a positive effect and play a positive moderating role in the relation to internationalization and firm performance. This seems to be because most tenant companies operating in Masan Free Trade Zone are small firms whose costs of internationalization may exceed the benefits. Empirical results also show that longer CEO tenure has a greater negative effect on firm performance. Originality/value - The originality/value of this paper can be found in 3 aspects. First, we conducted an empirical analysis on the relationship between the internationalization and firm performance of SMEs in a specific region, namely, Masan Free Trade Zone. Second, while most previous studies focused on listed medium companies, most of the sample of this study are small and medium non-listed enterprises. Third, it is witnessed that firm size has a positive moderating effect on the relation between internationalization and firm performance.

This study attempts to examine the factors affecting the introduction of e-Business systems and also, to assess the effects of various e-Business systems on firm performance. Empirical analysis is carried out with firm data of 2009, which is collected from Firm Activity Survey of Statistics Korea. Firm performance is measured by four indexes; operating income per employee, value added per employee, return on assets, and return on sales. Empirical results indicate that a firm is more likely to introduce any e-Business system as its size and its assets per employee are larger and as its ratio of labor compensations to operating costs is lower. Additionally, a firm with higher skill levels and more fruitful management experiences is more likely to have any e-Business system. In general, it appears that the presence of e-Business, especially enterprise resources planning, has positive effects on the firm performance.
This study empirically investigates innovative behaviors of the firm. In so doing, a Probit was employed and estimated. We used the raw data of the "corporate innovation survey"(CIS), which, in consent with OECD efforts, is regularly undertaken by the Science and Technology Policy Institute(SIEPI). The data set includes more than 3400 firms in the manufacturing sector. Three types of innovation, i.e., new product, product improvement and process innovation, are studied, assuming that determinants of innovation are firm′s age. number of employees as the size of firm, ratio of foreign ownership and innovation costs. To investigate the relationship between firm′s innovation behavior and the size, we estimate the Probit including the quadratic term of the firm size. Empirical findings showed that the sign of the quadratic term of the firm size turned out to be negative. It means that the probability of firm's making innovation shows the inversed-U relationship with the firm size. Such an empirical result may have a significant implication for the industrial policy.
This study analyzes the relationship among environment uncertainty, local infrastructure, flexible-open firm culture, operations performance and marketing performance focus on SMEs. This research has revealed that the relation among firm size, firm type, firm culture, operations performance and marketing performance as well. The findings show that firm has its culture which is preparing environment uncertainty and local infrastructure influence on forming firm culture. Change-oriented and leaning-oriented firm cultures affect operations performance and marketing performance. In conclusion, this study suggests implication and limitations for further research.
Recently, there has been increasing interests on strategic orientation and intellectual capital as measures of competitiveness and their impacts on firm performance. However, there was little research which verify empirically the relationships among strategic orientation, intellectual capital and firm peformance. This research scrutinizes the effects of strategic orientaion on intellectual capital and firm performance. Based on literature review, research model and hypotheses are developed and empirically tested. The results are as follows. First, market orientaion and entrepreneurial orientation have positive effects on human capital, structural capital and customer capital which compose intellectual capital. Second, market orientaion and entrepreneurial orientation do not influence firm performance directly, but indirectly influence firm performace via intellectual capital. Third, the hypothesis about the relationship between intellectual capital and firm performacne is partially accepted. Only customer capital affects firm performance. Discussions and implications are followed.
This paper examines how firm's investment has been affected by offshoring and financialization in Korea over the period 2000-2014 by using industry-level data collected from World Input Output Database (WIOD) and firm-level data collected from the KIS-Value Database. The findings are summarized as follows. First, offshoring index as expected shows a negative relationship with real investment. This negative impact is stronger in a large firm group. Second, there is a positive relationship between dividend payments and real investment. The positive relationship is greater in a small & medium-sized firm group. Third, the purchase of financial assets and the income generated from financial assets are positively related to real investment. The positive relationship is stronger in the small & medium-sized firm group. The empirical results show that firm size is a factor that effectively affects firm's real investment. This paper suggests that the influence of financialization and offshoring on firm's real investment should be assessed in various contexts rather than in a unilateral context.
