  • The magnesium oxide (MgO) protective layer plays an important role in plasma display panels (PDPs). In this paper, we describe the structural and discharge properties of MgO thin films, which were prepared by the ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) of oxygen as the protective layer of PDPs. The energy of the oxygen ion beam was used as the parameter to control the deposition. We found that the oxygen ion beam energy was effective in determining in structural and discharge characteristics. The lowest firing inception voltage, the highest brightness and the highest luminous efficiency were obtained when the MgO thin film was deposited with an oxygen ion beam energy of 300 eV. The crystallization of the MgO thin film was also measured by X-ray diffraction analysis, and the surface quality was measured by atomic force microscopy.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are toxic agents that may be involved in various neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies indicate that ROS are also involved in persistent pain through a spinal mechanism. In the present study, whole cell patch clamp recordings were carried out on substantia gelatinosa (SG) neurons in spinal cord slice of neonatal rats to investigate the effects of ROS on neuronal excitability and excitatory synaptic transmission. In current clamp condition, tert-buthyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH), an ROS donor, induced a electrical hyperexcitability during t-BuOOH wash-out followed by a brief inhibition of excitability in SG neurons. Application of t-BuOOH depolarized membrane potential of SG neurons and increased the neuronal firing frequencies evoked by depolarizing current pulses. Phenyl-N-tert-buthylnitrone (PBN), an ROS scavenger, antagonized t-BuOOH induced hyperexcitability. IN voltage clamp conditions, t-BuOOH increased the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs). In order to determine the site of action of t-BuOOH, miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) were recorded. t-BuOOH increased the frequency and amplitude of mEPSCs, indicating that it may modulate the excitability of the SG neurons via pre- and postsynaptic actions. These data suggest that ROS generated by peripheral nerve injury can induce central sensitization in spinal cord.

  • The doping procedure in crystalline silicon solar cell fabrication usually contains oxygen injection during drive-in process and removal of phosphorous silicate glass(PSG). In this paper, we studied the effect of oxygen injection and PSG on conversion efficiency of solar cell. The mono crystalline silicon wafers with $156{\times}156mm^2$, $200{\mu}m$, $0.5-3.0{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and p-type were used. After etching $7{\mu}m$ of the surface to form the pyramidal structure, the P(phosphorous) was injected into silicon wafer using diffusion furnace to make the emitter layer. After then, the silicon nitride was deposited by the PECVD with 80 nm thickness and 2.1 refractive index. The silver and aluminium electrodes for front and back sheet, respectively, were formed by screen-printing method, followed by firing in 400-425-450-550-$880^{\circ}C$ five-zone temperature conditions to make the ohmic contact. Solar cells with four different types were fabricated with/without oxygen injection and PSG removal. Solar cell that injected oxygen during the drive-in process and removed PSG after doping process showed the 17.9 % conversion efficiency which is best in this study. This solar cells showed $35.5mA/cm^2$ of the current density, 632 mV of the open circuit voltage and 79.5 % of the fill factor.

  • Screen printing method is a common way to fabricate the crystalline silicon solar cell with low-cost and high-efficiency. The screen printing metallization use silver paste and aluminum paste for front and rear contact, respectively. Especially the rear contact between aluminum and silicon is important to form the back surface filed (Al-BSF) after firing process. BSF plays an important role to reduces the surface recombination due to $p^+$ doping of back surface. However, Al electrode on back surface leads to bow occurring by differences in coefficient of thermal expansion of the aluminum and silicon. In this paper, we studied the properties of mono crystalline silicon solar cell for rear electrode with aluminum and aluminum-boron in order to characterize bow and BSF of each paste. The 156*156 $m^2$ p-type silicon wafers with $200{\mu}m$ thickness and 0.5-3 ${\Omega}\;cm$ resistivity were used after texturing, diffusion, and antireflection coating. The characteristics of solar cells was obtained by measuring vernier callipers, scanning electron microscope and light current-voltage. Solar cells with aluminum paste on the back surface were achieved with $V_{OC}$ = 0.618V, JSC = 35.49$mA/cm^2$, FF(Fill factor) = 78%, Efficiency = 17.13%.

  • Substantia nigra is known to highly express glibenclamide binding site, a protein associated to ATP-sensitive $K^{+}$ ($K_{ATP}$) channel in the brain. However, the functional expression of $K_{ATP}$ channels in the area is not yet known. In this work, we attempted to estimate the functional expression of $K_{ATP}$ channels in neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNC) in young rats using slice patch clamp technique. Membrane properties and whole cell currents attributable to $K_{ATP}$ channel were examined by the current and voltage clamp method, respectively. In SNC, two sub-populations of neurons were identified. Type I (rhythmic) neurons had low frequency rebound action potentials ($4.5{\pm}0.25Hz$, n=75) with rhythmic pattern. Type II (phasic) neurons were characterized by faster firing ($22.7{\pm}3.16Hz$, n=12). Both time constants and membrane capacitance in rhythmic neurons ($34.0{\pm}1.27$ ms, $270.0{\pm}11.83$ pF) and phasic neurons ($23.7{\pm}4.16$ ms, $184{\pm}35.2$ pF) were also significantly different. The current density of $K_{ATP}$ channels was $6.1{\pm}1.47$ pA/pF (2.44~15.43 pA/pF, n=8) at rhythmic neurons of young rats. Our data show that in SNC there are two types of neurons with different electrical properties and the density of $K_{ATP}$, channel of rhythmic neuron is about 600 channels per neuron.

  • In this paper, investigations of thick film $La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.16}Fe_{0.04}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSGMF) cells fabricated via spin coating on either NiO-YSZ anode or $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Ga_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}O_3$ (LSGF) cathode substrates are presented. A La-doped $CeO_2$ (LDC) layer is inserted between NiO-YSZ and LSGMF in order to prevent reactions from occurring during co-firing. For the LSGF cathode-supported cell, no interlayer was required because the components of the cathode are the same as those of LSGMF with the exception of Mg. An LSGMF electrolyte slurry was deposited homogeneously on the porous supports via spin coating. The current-voltage characteristics of the anode and cathode supported LSGMF cells at temperatures between $700^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ are described. The LSGF cathode supported cell demonstrates a theoretical OCV and a power density of ~420 mW $cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, whereas the NiO-YSZ anode supported cell with the LDC interlayer demonstrates a maximum power density of ~350 mW $cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, which decreased more rapidly than the cathode supported cell despite the presence of the LDC interlayer. Potential causes of the degradation at temperatures over $700^{\circ}C$ are also discussed.

  • This paper presents the effect of driving waveform for piezoelectric bend mode inkjet printhead with optimized mechanical design. Experimental and theoretical studies on the applied driving waveform versus jetting characteristic s were performed. The inkjet head has been designed to maximize the droplet velocity, minimize voltage response of the actuator and optimize the firing frequency to eject ink droplet. The head design was carried out by using mechanical simulation. The printhead has been fabricated with Si(100) and SOI wafers by MEMS process and silicon direct bonding method. To investigate how performance of the piezoelectric ceramic actuator influences on droplet diameter and droplet velocity, the method of stroboscopy was used. Also we observed the movement characteristics of PZT actuator with LDV(Laser Doppler Vibrometer) system, oscilloscope and dynamic signal analyzer. Missing nozzles caused by bubbles in chamber were monitored by their resonance frequency. Using the water based ink of viscosity of 4.8 cps and surface tension of 0.025N/m, it is possible to eject stable droplets up to 20kHz, 4.4m/s and above 8pL at the different applied driving waveforms.

  • Since first discovered in chick skeletal muscles, stretch-activated channels (SACs) have been proposed as a probable mechano-transducer of the mechanical stimulus at the cellular level. Channel properties have been studied in both the single-channel and the whole-cell level. There is growing evidence to indicate that major stretch-induced changes in electrical activity are mediated by activation of these channels. We aimed to investigate the mechanism of stretch-induced automaticity by exploiting a recent mathematical model of rat atrial myocytes which had been established to reproduce cellular activities such as the action potential, $Ca^{2+}$ transients, and contractile force. The incorporation of SACs into the mathematical model, based on experimental results, successfully reproduced the repetitive firing of spontaneous action potentials by stretch. The induced automaticity was composed of two phases. The early phase was driven by increased background conductance of voltage-gated $Na^+$ channel, whereas the later phase was driven by the reverse-mode operation of $Na^+/Ca^{2+}$ exchange current secondary to the accumulation of $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ through SACs. These results of simulation successfully demonstrate how the SACs can induce automaticity in a single atrial myocyte which may act as a focus to initiate and maintain atrial fibrillation in concert with other arrhythmogenic changes in the heart.

  • Screen printing is commonly used to form the front/back electrodes in silicon solar cell. But it has caused high resistance and low aspect ratio, resulting in decreased conversion efficiency in solar cell. Recently the plating method has been combined with screen-printed c-Si solar cell to reduce the resistance and improve the aspect ratio. In this paper, we investigated the effect of light induced silver plating with screen-printed c-Si solar cells and compared their electrical properties. All wafers were textured, doped, and coated with anti-reflection layer. The metallization process was carried out with screen-printing, followed by co-fired. Then we performed light induced Ag plating by changing the plating time in the range of 20 sec~5min with/without external light. For comparison, we measured the light I-V characteristics and electrode width by optical microscope. During plating, silver ions fill the porous structure established in rapid silver particle sintering during co-firing step, which results in resistance decrease and efficiency improvement. The plating rate was increased in presence of light lamp, resulting in widening the electrode with and reducing the short-circuit current by shadowing loss. With the optimized plating condition, the conversion efficiency of solar cells was increased by 0.4% due to decreased series resistance. Finally we obtained the short-circuit current of 8.66 A, open-circuit voltage of 0.632 V, fill factor of 78.2%, and efficiency of 17.8% on a silicon solar cell.
