  • This paper describes a series of compression tests performed on cold-formed steel channel sections with perforations in the web (thermal studs) fabricated from a galvanized steel plate whose thickness ranged from 1.0 mm to 1.6 mm and nominal yield stress was 295 MPa. The structural behavior and performance of thermal studs undergoing local, distortional, or flexural-torsional buckling were investigated experimentally and analytically. The compression tests indicate that the slits in the web had significant negative effects on the buckling and ultimate strength of thin-walled channel section columns. The compressive strength of perforated thermal studs was estimated using equivalent solid channel sections of reduced thickness instead of the studs. The direct strength method, a newly developed and adopted alternative to the effective width method for designing cold-formed steel sections in the AISI Standard S100 (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (Standard Australia 2005), was calibrated to the test results for its application to cold-formed channel sections with slits in the web. The results verify that the DSM can predict the ultimate strength of channel section columns with slits in the web by substituting equivalent solid sections of reduced thickness for them.

  • Many car manufacturers have frequently adopted an aggressive inflator and a lower threshold speed for airbag deployment in order to meet an injury requirement for unbolted occupant at high speed crash test. Consequently, today's occupant safety restraint system has a weakness due to an airbag induced injury at low speed crash event. This paper proposes a new crash algorithm to improve the weakness by suppressing airbag deployment at low speed crash event in case of belted condition. The proposed algorithm consists of two major blocks-crash severity algorithm and deployment logic block. The first block decides crash severity with two levels by means of velocity and crash energy calculation from acceleration signal. The second block implemented by simple AND/OR logic combines the crash severity level and seat belt status information to generate firing commands for airbag and belt pretensioner. Furthermore, it can be extended to adopt additional sensor information from passenger presence detection sensor and safing sensor. A simulation using real crash data for a 1,800cc passenger vehicle has been conducted to verify the performance of proposed algorithm.

  • In this study, development tests varying with concrete strength, development length, and the rate of fiber mix ratio are carried out to evaluate the development characteristics of high-strength concrete member with 80MPa, and the applicability of estimated standards of development length in KCI 2007. As a result, it can be expected that minimum development length of KCI 2007 is applicable to high-strength concrete member with 80MPa. Although the mixed fiber(NY+PP) to secure fire resistance performance of high-strength concrete is included up to 0.1%, it does not affect the development characteristics.

  • A mixed eight-node hexahedral element formulated via the Hu-Washizu principle as well as the field extrapolation technique is presented. The mixed element with only three translational degrees of freedom at each node can provide extremely accurate and reliable performance for popular benchmark problems such as spacial beams, plates, shells as well as general three-dimensional elasticity problems. Numerical calculations also show that when extremely skewed and coarse meshes and nearly incompressible materials are used, the proposed mixed element can still possess excellent behaviour. The mixed formulation starts with introduction of a parallelepiped domain associated with the given general eight-node hexahedral element. Then, the assumed strain field at the nodal level is constructed via the Hu-Washizu variational principle for that associated parallelepiped domain. Finally, the assumed strain field at the nodal level of the given hexahedral element is established by using the field extrapolation technique, and then by using the trilinear shape functions the assumed strain field of the whole element domain is obtained. All matrices involved in establishing the element stiffness matrix can be evaluated analytically and expressed explicitly; however, a 24 by 24 matrix has to be inverted to construct the displacement extrapolation matrix. The proposed hexahedral element satisfies the patch test as long as the element with a shape of parallelepiped.

  • In Strapdown Inertial Navigation System, alignment accuracy is the most important factor to determine the performance of navigation. However by an existing self-alignment method, it takes a long time to acquire the alignment accuracy that we want. So, to attain the desired alignment accuracy in as little as $\bigcirc$ minutes, we have developed the precise multi-position alignment method. In this paper, it is proposed a inertial measurement matching transfer alignment method among alignment methods to minimize the alignment error in a short time. It is based on a mixed velocity-DCM matching method be suitable to the operating environment of vertical launching system. The compensation methods to reduce misalign error, especially azimuth angle error incurred by measurement time-delay error and body flexure error are analyzed and evaluated with simulation. This simulation results are finally confirmed by experimentations using FMS(Flight Motion Simulator) in Lab and the integration test to follow the fire control mission.

  • Recently, the importance of improving air quality has been greatly highlighted due to environmental problems such as indoor air pollution, and efforts are being made to improve indoor air quality not only in Korea but also around the world. In this situation, this study aims to study the physical properties of cement boards using pearlite with excellent physical adsorption performance due to micropores in materials, expanded graphite that is widely used as a flame retardant to prevent heat transfer in the event of a fire. The experimental items are bending fracture load and impact resistance. The bending destruction load at the fiber mixing rates 1, 2, 3, and 4 (%) did not meet the standard 140N, but the bending destruction load at 5% was 168.2N, and the impact resistance of the fiber mixing rates 1 and 2 (%) could not be measured due to cracks and damage, and the impact resistance at 3, 4, and 5 (%).

  • This paper is to investigate the affecting factors on spalling of the high strength concrete including W/B, air content and moisture condition as well as PP fiber contents subjected to fire. An increase with 0.05% of PP fiber resulted in a reduction of slump flow by as much as 11%. Ten percent of air contents due to excessive amounts of AE agent does not lead to variance of slump flow, regardless of PP fiber content. For the effect of the compressive strength, high strength concrete with 15, 25 and 35% of W/B gained 60 MPa~100 MPa of the compressive strength. High strength concrete with H-air had half of compressive strength of that with L-air due to large amount of air. Fire test was conducted in accordance with KS F 2257-1 for 1 hour. Spalling did not occur with all specimens containing more than 0.10% of PP fiber except those with 15% of W/B. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the specimens with more than 10% of air content and with oven dried condition, respectively, had no spalling even if the content of PP fiber is 0.05 vol.%.

  • A fire station and scuba have operated filling facilities for respiratory high-pressure cylinder without getting authority or reporting according to High-Pressure Gas Safety Control Act. They need facility improvement and special management to make provision for the time of accident during filling process. The Government have strived to correct illegal operations and suggested an alternative, establishing and operating the safety cabinet. It insures a safety being distance from danger caused by overpressure and a safety provoked by the protective wall equals or superiors. The safety cabinet is required to have an internal structure that smoothly distribute overpressure at the time of rupture. Plus, it needs to minimize fragments. It is also equipped with the performance of protective wall that makes overpressure to outside vent on the place where there is no person (top or bottom). This study calculated the consequence of physical explosion damage and built a prototype of safety cabinet. In addition, through the gas burst test, it derives for the ways to mitigate the physical explosion damage.

  • Smoke masks have attracted great interests and have been supplied widely for the improvement of the safety during fire evacuation. However, there is not sufficient research on the practical utility, certification status and easy-donning about commercial smoke masks, therefore it is difficult to determine the actual usefulness of the smoke masks. In this study, we conducted a survey on users' perceptions and experiences about the smoke masks, and investigated the status of certification of 54 commercial smoke masks. We also performed donning tests and examined degrees of discomfort for 4 types of the smoke masks. Although 22% of 235 respondents had experienced the smoke masks before the test, and 23% of the respondents did not know the smoke masks, 93% of the respondents expected that the smoke masks could protect users from fire smokes and toxic gases. It was found that 41% of the commercial smoke masks did not certify according to domestic or overseas performance standards. Most certification standards have not effectively regulated maximum wearing time for the smoke masks. Only ASTM E 2952 and KFIS 024 had specific standards for the maximum wearing time of 30 s. As a result of donning tests for 4 types of smoke masks, the wearing time of the hood-type mask and self-contained smoke mask exceeded 30 s, therefore these types of smoke masks might increase the required safe evacuation time. On the other hand, it was also found that short education about the donning could reduce the wearing time by 19% and numbers of improper wearing by 89%.
