  • In order to decrease remarkably the computation time and storage used in the direct integration method without the loss of accuracy, authors suggest a new transient analysis algorithm. This algorithm is derived from the combination of three techniques, that is, the transfer technique of the transfer stiffness coefficient method, the modeling technique of the finite element method, and the numerical integration technique of the Newmark method. In this paper, the transient analysis algorithm of a frame structure is formulated by the proposed method. The accuracy and computation efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated through the comparing with the computation results by the direct integration method for three computation models under various excitations.

  • The development of more safe recliners is an important issue in the automotive industry. However, the development of new recliners is costly and take much time because it is typically based on experimental evaluation using prototypes. This study presents the evaluation of rear crashworthiness for round recliner using finite element method. That reduces the number of repeating test and gives an information about stiffness. To evaluate rear crashworthiness, the FMVSS 301 simulation and pendulum impact simulation were performed. The load path on two simulations was observed and compared each other in this paper. Also stress, strain and internal energy was compared. It is attempted the tooth strength simulation using a substructure option on PAM-CRASH.

  • This paper presents of effect of tunneling on pile group of being operated bridge using Three-dimensional numerical modeling to study the effect of coordination of tunneling location under discontinuous group pile. In order to find idealistic tunneling location that causes settlement, change of stress on the piles and movement of soil at a minimum, a fully coupled 3D finite element model is adopted. The study contains pile settlement, axial force on each piles in the group, axial displacement of piles and soil behaviour caused by tunneling. Based on the result some insights into the pile behavior due to tunneling obtained from numerical analysis were mentioned and discussed.

  • The buckling and vibration characteristics of stiffened plates subjected to in-plane concentrated edge loading are studied using finite element method. The problem involves the effects of non-uniform stress distribution over the plate. Buckling loads and vibration frequencies are determined for different plate aspect ratios, boundary edge conditions and load positions. The non-uniform stresses may also be caused due to the supports on the edges. The analysis presented determines the initial stresses all over the region considering the pre-buckling stress state for different kinds of loading and edge conditions. In the structural modeling, the plate and the stiffeners are treated as separate elements where the compatibility between these two types of elements is maintained. The vibration characteristics are discussed and the results are compared with those available in the literature and some interesting new results are obtained.

  • Masonry bridges are the vital components of transportation systems. Although these bridges were constructed centuries ago, they have served a purpose from ancient times to the present day. However, the bridges have needed local renovation and therefore have been rebuilt over different periods in many places. This study focuses on Low Bridge, which is an example of renovated masonry bridges in Turkey. It essentially assesses the structural behavior of the masonry bridge and investigates the integrity of the renovated components. For this purpose, the mechanical properties of the bridge material have been primarily evaluated with experimental tests. Then the static, modal and nonlinear time history analyses have been carried out with the use of finite element methods in order to investigate the structural behavior of the current form of the bridge.

  • This paper describes an automated evaluation of electrostatic field for micro motors whose sizes range 10 to 103um. Electric field modeling in micro motors has been generally restricted to in-plane two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). In this paper, the actual three-dimensional geometry of the micro motor is considered. An automatic FE mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry techniques, is incorporated in the system, together with one of commercial FE analysis codes and one of commercial solid modelers. The system allows a geometry model of concern to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on physical phenomena to be analyzed, electrostatic analysis and stress analysis and so on. The FE models are then exported to the FE analysis code, and then analyses are peformed. Then, analytical analysis and FE analysis about the torque generated by electrostatic micro motor are performed. The starting torque is proportional to $V^2$, the calculated starting torque from the two-dimensional analytical solutions are three times larger than those from the three-dimensional FE solutions.

  • Finite element analysis using ANSYS program conducted to evaluate the tensile behavior of the connection between reinforced concrete and steel members is presented in this paper. It is assumed that there is a complete bond between head part of the stud and concrete. However, the surface of the column area of stud is separated from the concrete to stop the stress transmission between those. In case of using reinforcement connectors such as C or U type, the interface between concrete and reinforcement is idealized to have strong adhesion. Four concrete-steel specimens which are connected by stud connector or reinforcement connectors are compared and analyzed From the comparison, it was shown that the connection between concrete and steel could be predicted by using the modeling technique used in this paper.

  • Unusual mechanical constitutive behavior of magnesium alloy sheets has been implemented into the finite element program ABAQUS via user material subroutine. For the verification purpose, the springback of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was measured using the unconstrained cylindrical bending test of Numisheet'2002. In addition to the developed constitutive models, the other two models based on isotropic constitutive equations with tensile and compressive properties were also considered. Preliminary comparisons have been made between simulated results by the finite element analysis and corresponding experiments and the newly proposed model showed enhanced prediction capability in springback prediction.

  • The current study has developed an in-house 3D FEM code in order to model thermoacoustic problems in a gas turbine combustion system and compared calculation results of main instability characteristics with measured ones from a lab-scale partially-premixed combustor. From the comparison of calculation results with the measured data, the current model could successfully capture the harmonic longitudinal instability frequencies and their spatial distributions of the acoustic field as well as the growth rate of self-excited modes.

  • In this paper, a unified micromechanics-based model which can be applied to both tensile and compressive member of concrete is suggested and to the analysis of the strain-localization in concrete. From the comparison of the analysis results obtained from different size of concrete members with experimental data, it id shown that the model in this paper can be applied to the analysis of the strain localization concrete. For the finite element analysis of the strain-localization in concrete, the localized zone in concrete under strain localization is modeled as ad plastic model which can consider nonlinear strain softening and the non-localized zone is modeled as a nonlinear elastic-damage model. Using developed finite element analysis program. strain localization behaviors under compressive force for the different sizes of concrete having different sizes of the localized zone are simulated.
