Fretting, which is a special type of wear, is defined as small amplitude tangential oscillation along the contacting interface between two materials. In nuclear power plants, fretting wear caused by flow induced vibration (FIV) can make a serious problem in a U-tube bundle in steam generator. In this study, substructure method is developed and is verified the feasibility for the finite element model of fretting wear problems. This method is applied to the two-dimensional finite element analyses, which simulate the contact behavior of actual tube to support. For these examples, computing time can be reduced up to 1/5 in comparisons with conventional finite element analyses.

Recently, long large bridges are built for mass transportation. Movable bearing shoes are important components of the bridges because they support movement of translation and rotation of bridge. In design stage of the long large bridges, detailed analyses using the finite element method are performed to guarantee safety and reliability. For that purpose, three-dimensional modeling is carried out by I-DEAS software and finite element analysis by ANSYS software. Results of the analyses are reviewed and important design factors for movable bearing shoes are discussed.

Computational rotor dynamic analyses of designed composite roller for large LCD panel manufacturing process have been conducted. The present computational method is based on the general finite element method with rotating gyroscopic effects. General purpose commercial finite element code, with special rotordynamics analysis module is applied. For the purpose of numerical verification, comparison study for a benchmark dual rotor model with support bearings is also presented. Detailed finite element models for composite roller with different length are constructed and analyzed considering gravity effect in order to investigate vibration characteristics in actual operation environment. As results of the present study, rotor stability diagrams and mass unbalance responses are presented for different rotating conditions.
This paper presents investigation of a three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear finite element model analysis to examine the behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility of the beams. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models were developed between the internal reinforcement and concrete using a smeared relationship. In addition, bond models between the concrete surface and CFRP composite were developed using a smeared bond for general analyses and a contact bond for sensitivity analyses. The results of the FEA were compared with the experimental data on full-scale members. The results of two finite-element bonding models showed good agreement with those of the experimental tests.

This paper provides a failure pressure evaluation model for local wall-thinned elbows. In this study, parametric finite element analyses are performed on the elbows containing local wall-thinning defect at their intrados and extrados, and the failure pressures are obtained from the analysis results by applying a local failure criterion that was validated by real-scale pipe tests. An evaluation model including the effects of thinning depth, length, circumferential angle, thinning location, and elbow geometries on the failure pressure is derived based on the evaluated failure pressures. The proposed model agrees well with the results of finite element analyses and reasonably estimates the dependence of failure pressure on the wall-thinning dimensions and elbow geometries. Also, the comparison with experimental data demonstrates that the proposed evaluation model can accurately predict the failure pressure of local wall-thinned elbows.
One of the preferred methods that can be used to verify the results of finite element analysis is to measure surface strains of the deformed part for purpose of direct comparison with simulation results. Instead of using the usual manual method the vision-based measurement method is capable of determining surface geometry and strain from the deformed grid pattern automatically with the help of a computer. To obtain strain distribution over an area, the coordinates of such a surface grid are determined from the multiple video images by applying the photogrammetry principle. Methods to improve the overall accuracy of the vision-based strain measurement system are explored and the possible accuracies that can be attained by such a measurement method are discussed. A major emphasis is placed on the initial grid application method its accuracy and ease of subsequent image processing. Finite element analyses of limiting dome height(LDH) test are carried out and the results of them are compared with exsperimen-tal data.

In this study, three-dimensional rotordynamic analyses have been conducted using equivalent beam, hybrid and fun three-dimensional models. The Present computational method is based on the general finite element method with rotating gyroscopic effects of a rotor system. General purpose commercial finite element code, SAMCEF which includes practical rotordynamics module with various types of rotor analysis methods and bearing elements is applied. For the purpose of numerical verification, comparison study for a benchmark rotor model with support bearings is performed first. Detailed finite element models based on three different modeling concepts are constructed and then computational analyses are conducted for the realistic and complex three-dimensional rotor system. The results for rotor stability and mass unbalance response are presented and compared with the experimental vibration test conducted in this study.

In general, the vibration and structural analyses have been carried out by using each finite element model separately because of different size of finite element mesh and different focusing area of each analysis. In some cases, however, it is required to perform both global vibration and structural analyses at the same time using a finite element model for global structural analysis, which asks for a special treatment for a vibration analysis. In this study, a technique to perform a global vibration analysis using a finite element model for a global structural analysis has been developed and its effectiveness has been verified by its application to a whole ship.

The objective of this paper is to obtain stress intensity factor solutions for a corner crack originating at bolt holes in a rotating disc. Initially two-dimensional finite element analyses of a rotating disc with bolt holes are performed to determine the maximum stress region. Subsequently three-dimensional finite element analyses of a rotating disc with a corner crack originating at the bolt holes are performed with a variety of crack geometries. According to the numerical results, the maximum stress intensity factor, with an increase in crack depth ratio, was observed at the surface of the plate due to the interference effect of corner crack and disc bore.
Tanks are used extensively in many engineering areas for spent fuel pool structures at nuclear power plants or for water storage tanks in bulk carriers. To ensure the structural integrity of such tanks when under dynamic loads, modal characteristics such as natural frequencies, participation factors and mode shapes should be known. Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of a square tank by the finite element method. This approach can be used with subsequent dynamic analyses such as a response spectrum analysis or a harmonic analysis. Finite element models are prepared to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes, which are easy to find the modal characteristics of a fluid-filled square tank. The effects of the fluid contained in the tank and the boundary conditions at top and bottom ends on the modal characteristics are assessed by several finite element analyses.
