The successful replacement of missing teeth has been one driving aim behind the emergence of implant dentistry as both a technology and clinical vocation for over four decades. To date, a multitude of dental implant devices had been designed and utilized in the patient population. Most of these devices have been designed without support of the engineering criteria. The long-term success of any dental implant is dependent upon the optimization of stresses which occurs during oral function and parafunction. Although many studies have examined the biologic interactions between dental implants and living tissue, few studies have been reported on the biomechanical aspects of dental implants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution of osseointegrated prosthesis on certain conditions, such as amount of load, location of load, length of fixtures, number of fixtures used, arch shape, bone quality, etc. Three dimentional finite element analysis was used for this study. FEM models were created using commercial software(Super SAP. for IBM 16 bit AT computer. All elements were 8-node brick, isoparametric. Mandible and prosthesis was modeled with 780 elements and 1074 nodes. The results were as follows : 1. In case of cantilever extension, there was a compressive stress at the base of the first implant and a tensile stress at the base of the second implant. 2. The stresses were linearly proportional to the amount of load. 3. The stresses were linearly proportional to the length of cantilever. 4. There was a stress concentration at the neck of the implant and bone under horizontal loads.
This paper presents two methods of obtaining approximate analytic solutions for the temperature distributions and heat flow to two-dimensional transient heat conduction problems in a finite strip with constant thermal properties using the Heat Balance Integral. The methods introduced in this study are as follows; one using the Heat Balance Integral only, and the other successively using the Heat Balance Integral and an exact analytic method. Both methods are applicable to a large number of the two-dimensional unsteady conduction problems in finite regions such as extended surfaces with uniform thickness, but in this paper only solutions for the unsteady problems in a finite strip with boundary condition at the base expressed in terms of step function are provided as an illustration. Results obtained by both methods are compared with those by the exact two-dimensional transient analysis. It is found that both approximate methods generate small time solutions, which can not be obtained easily by any exact analytic method for small values of Fourier numbers. In the case of applying the successive use of the Heat Balance Integral and Laplace transforms, the analysis shows good agreement with the exact solutions for any Fourier number in the range of Biot numbers less than 0.5.

Wake characteristics of the flow over a finite square prism at different incidence angles were experimentally investigated using an open-loop wind tunnel. A finite square prism with a width D = 15 mm and a height H = 7D was vertically mounted on a horizontal flat plate. The Reynolds number was varied from $6.5{\times}10^3$ to $28.5{\times}10^3$ and the incidence angle ${\alpha}$ was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$. The ratio of boundary layer thickness to the prism height was about ${\delta}/H=7%$. The time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity and the vortex shedding frequency were obtained through a single-component hotwire probe. Power spectrum of the streamwise velocity fluctuations revealed that the tip and base vortices shed at the same frequency as that ofspanwise vortices. Furthermore, the results showed that the critical incidence angle corresponding to the maximum Strouhal number and minimum wake width occurs at ${\alpha}_{cr}=15^{\circ}$ which is equal to that reported for an infinite prism. There is a reduction in the size of the wake region along the height of the prism when moving away from the ground plane towards the free end.
In this paper, the vibroacoustic responses of baffled laminated composite sandwich flat panel structure under the influence of harmonic excitation are studied numerically using a novel higher-order coupled finite-boundary element model. A numerical scheme for the vibrating plate has been developed in the frame work of the higher-order mid-plane kinematics and the eigen frequencies are obtained by employing suitable finite element steps. The acoustic responses are then computed by solving the Helmholtz wave equation using boundary element method coupled with the structural finite elements. The proposed scheme has been implemented via an own MATLAB base code to compute the desired responses. The validity of the present model is established from the conformance of the current natural frequencies and the radiated sound power with the available benchmark solutions. The model is further utilized to scrutinize the influence of core-to-face thickness ratio, modular ratio, lamination scheme and the support condition on the sound radiation characteristics of the vibrating sandwich flats panel. It can be concluded that the present scheme is not only accurate but also efficient and simple in providing solutions of the coupled vibroacoustic response of laminated composite sandwich plates.
A prediction of penetration and heat affected zone by using Finite Element Method in CO$_{2}$ Arc Welding has been discussed this paper. The temperature distribution of a base metal produced by the CO$_{2}$ arc welding processing is analyzed by using a three dimensional finite element model. The common finite element program ANSYS 4.4A was employed to obtain the numerical results. Temperature dependent material properties, effect of latent heat, and the convective boundary conditions are included in the model. Numerically predicted sizes of the penetration and the heat affected zone are compared with the experimentally observed values. As a result, there was a slight difference between numerical analysis values and experimentally observed values. For in the case of heat affected zone, it was not considered a precise forced convective coefficient value, and in the case of penetration, it was not, considered a arc force.
This paper develops a finite element model for frontal crash analysis of a large-sized truck. It is composed of 220 parts, 70,041 nodes and 69,073 elements. This paper explains only major parts' models in detail such as frame, cab, floor, and bumper which affect on crash analysis a lot. In order to prevent penetration not only at a part itself but also between parts, all contact areas are defined using type-36, self-impact type. The developed model's reliability is validated by comparing simulation and crash test results. The results used for model validation are vehicle pulses at B-pillar, and frame and deformation of frame and cab. The frontal crash simulation is performed with the same conditions as crash test. And, it is performed using PAM-CRASH installed in super-computer SP2. The developed model whose reliability is verified may be used as a base to develop a finite element model for occupant behavior and injury coefficient analysis.

Penetration of a fragment-like projectile into Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) was simulated using finite element (FE) and particle formulations. Extreme deformations and failure of the material during the penetration event were modeled with multiple approaches to evaluate how well each represented the actual physics of the penetration process and compared to experimental data. A Fragment Simulating Projectile(FSP) normally impacting a flat, square plate of FRC was modeled using two target thicknesses to examine the different levels of damage. The thinner plate was perforated by the FSP, while the thicker plate captured the FSP and only allowed penetration part way through the thickness. Full three dimensional simulations were performed, so the capability was present for non-symmetric FRC behavior and possible projectile rotation in all directions. These calculations assessed the ability of the finite element and particle formulations to calculate penetration response while assessing criteria necessary to perform the computations. The numerical code EPIC contains the element and particle formulations, as well as the explicit methodology and constitutive models, needed to perform these simulations.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of canine guidance occlusion and group function occlusion on the degree of stress to the bone, implants, abutments, and crowns using finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS. This study included the implant-prosthesis system of a three-unit bridge made of monolithic zirconia and hybrid abutments. Three-dimensional (3D) models of a bone-level implant system and a titanium base abutment were created using the original implant components. Two titanium implants, measuring 4 × 11 mm each, were selected. The loads were applied in two oblique directions of 15° and 30° under two occlusal movement conditions. In the canine guidance condition, loads (100 N) were applied to the canine crown only. In the group function condition, loads were applied to all three teeth. In this loading, a force of 100 N was applied to the canine, and 200-N forces were applied to each premolar. The stress distribution among all the components of the implant-bridge system was assessed using ANSYS SpaceClaim 2020 R2 software and finite element analysis. RESULTS. Maximum stress was found in the group function occlusion. The maximum stress increased with an increase in the angle of occlusal force. CONCLUSION. The canine guidance occlusion with monolithic zirconia crown materials is promising for implant-supported prostheses in the canine and premolar areas.
This research focuses on finite element model updating and damage assessment of structures at element level based on global nondestructive test results. For this purpose, an optimization system is generated to minimize the structural dynamic parameters discrepancies between numerical and experimental models. Objective functions are selected based on the square of Euclidean norm error of vibration frequencies and modal assurance criterion of mode shapes. In order to update the finite element model and detect local damages within the structural members, modern optimization techniques is implemented according to the evolutionary algorithms to meet the global optimized solution. Using a simulated numerical example, application of genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms are investigated in FE model updating and damage detection problems to consider their accuracy and convergence characteristics. Then, a hybrid multi stage optimization method is presented merging advantages of PSO and ABC methods in finding damage location and extent. The efficiency of the methods have been examined using two simulated numerical examples, a laboratory dynamic test and a high-rise building field ambient vibration test results. The implemented evolutionary updating methods show successful results in accuracy and speed considering the incomplete and noisy experimental measured data.
Ni-based superalloys have exceptional performance in high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, etc, and it has been widely used in various applications that require corrosion resistance at high-temperature operations. However, the relatively expensive cost of the Ni-based superalloys is one of the major hurdles. The corrosion-resisted alloy(CRA) clad materials can be a cost-effective solution. In this study, finite element analysis of the hot rolling process for manufacturing of the Alloy 625/API X65 steel CRA clad plates is conducted. The stress-strain curves of the two materials are measured in compressive tests for various temperature and strain rate conditions, using the Gleeble tester. Then, strain hardening behavior is modeled following the modified Johnson-Cook model. Finite element analysis of the hot rolled cladding process is performed using this strain rate and temperature dependent hardening model. Finally, the thickness ratio of the CRA and base material is predicted and compared with experimental values.
