Seismic isolation is a well-known method to mitigate the earthquake effects on structures by increasing their fundamental natural periods at the expense of larger displacements in the structural system. In this paper, the seismic response of isolated and fixed base vertical, cylindrical, liquid storage tanks is investigated using a Finite Element Model (FEM), taking into account fluid-structure interaction effects. Three vertical, cylindrical tanks with different ratios of height to radius (H/R = 2.6, 1.0 and 0.3) are numerically analyzed and the results of response-history analysis, including base shear, overturning moment and free surface displacement are reported for isolated and non-isolated tanks. Isolated tanks equipped by lead rubber bearings isolators and the bearing are modeled by using a non-linear spring in FEM model. It is observed that the seismic isolation of liquid storage tanks is quite effective and the response of isolated tanks is significantly influenced by the system parameters such as their fundamental frequencies and the aspect ratio of the tanks. However, the base isolation does not significantly affect the surface wave height and even it can causes adverse effects on the free surface sloshing motion.
Base isolation technologies have been proven to be very efficient in protecting structures from seismic hazards during experimental and theoretical studies. In recent years, there have been more and more engineering applications using base isolators to upgrade the seismic resistibility of structures. Optimum design of the base isolator can lessen the undesirable seismic hazard with the most efficiency. Hence, tracing the nonlinear behavior of the base isolator with good accuracy is important in the engineering profession. In order to predict the nonlinear behavior of base isolated structures precisely, hundreds even thousands of degrees-of-freedom and iterative algorithm are required for nonlinear time history analysis. In view of this, a simple and feasible exact formulation without any iteration has been proposed in this study to calculate the seismic responses of structures with base isolators. Comparison between the experimental results from shaking table tests conducted at National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan and the analytical results show that the proposed method can accurately simulate the seismic behavior of base isolated structures with elastomeric bearings. Furthermore, it is also shown that the proposed method can predict the nonlinear behavior of the VCFPS isolated structure with accuracy as compared to that from the nonlinear finite element program. Therefore, the proposed concept can be used as a simple and practical tool for engineering professions for designing the elastomeric bearing as well as sliding bearing.
Dynamic vibration absorbers are widely used in machinery, buildings, and structures, including bridges. Two cases of their usage are considered in this paper. One is a simply supported beam subjected to either a moving force or a sequence of moving forces, which simulates a train-bridge interaction problem. The other is a case where a primary system is mounted on a base that is not grounded and is excited by an external force. The conditions that the dynamic vibration absorbers must meet in these cases are found and compared to those for usual cases where bases of primary systems are grounded.
To assess a creep life of elevated temperature plant components, inspections and analysis are usually focused on the critical locations. In this study, stress analysis of a weld region in branch part of Y-piece was conducted by using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. The stresses at the inner and outer surface in the weld part were estimated by using elastic and elastic-creep analysis. For the elastic-creep analysis two kinds of elastic-creep analysis was conducted. The one was assumed that base and weld material properties were same and the other was that material properties were different between base and weld metal. The material properties of base and weld metal were used from reference data. The results showed the stress relaxation level and its location. The result stresses are also compared with elastic stresses.
The physics of the flow field surrounding an engine nacelle afterbody is very complex. A high pressure jet from the nozzle interacts with the external flow and causes upstream influence on the afterbody surface field. At certain conditions, the nozzle boundary layer can separate, either by shock wave interaction or by adverse pressure gradient effect, resulting in a severe drag penalty. Furthermore, a finite afterbody base implies a recirculating flow region. A flow modeling method has been developed to analyze the flow in the annular base(rear-facing surface) of a circular engine nacelle flying at subsonic speed but with a supersonic exhause jet. Real values of exhaust gas properties and temperature are included.
This paper proposes probabilistic models for estimating the seismic demands on reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with base isolation. The models consider the shear and deformation demands on the bridge columns and the deformation demand on the isolation devices. An experimental design is used to generate a population of bridges based on the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (AASHTO 2007) and the Caltrans' Seismic Design Criteria (Caltrans 1999). Ground motion records are used for time history analysis of each bridge to develop probabilistic models that are practical and are able to account for the uncertainties and biases in the current, common deterministic model. As application of the developed probabilistic models, a simple method is provided to determine the fragility of bridges. This work facilitates the reliability-based design for this type of bridges and contributes to the transition from limit state design to performance-based design.
This study was carried out to investigate the engineering characteristics of the R.C circular ring sector plate with various boundary conditions and then to propose a rational and paraical method for application of finite element method to R.C structures. The stiffness matrix of the circular ring sector plate was obtained by using the multi-base coordinate system in which the base-coordinate systems were constructed for each nodal point of the quadrilateral element in order to reflect the complicated boundary conditions conveniently and correctly. The R.C element stiffness matrix was constructed by adding the stiffness coefficients of the steel-bar element into the plate bending element stiffness matrix. Herein, the steel-bar element was treated as the common beam element. Using the above method, the effects of steel-bar can be considered without increasing of the numbers of element and nodal points.
The early -age behavior of base restrained reinforced concrete (RC) walls is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method in this study. After calculating the temperature and internal relative humidity variations of an RC wall, determination of stresses due to thermal gradients, differential drying shrinkage, and average drying shrinkage is followed, and the relative contribution of these three stress components to the total stress is compared. The mechanical properties of early-age concrete, determined from many experimental studies, are taken into consideration, and a discrete reinforcing steel derived using the equivalent nodal force concept is also used to simulate the cracking behavior of RC walls. In advance, to Predict the crack spacing and maximum crack width in a base restrained RC wall, an analytical model which can simulate the post-cracking behavior of an RC tension member is introduced on the basis of the energy equilibrium before and after cracking of concrete.

In this study a base-isolated liquid storage tank subjected to seismic ground motion is numerically simulated on frequency , domain considering three-dimensional liquid-structure-soil interaction. A hybrid formulation which combines the versatility of finite elements for tank structure and the efficiency of boundary elements for liquid and soil region is adopted for efficient modeling. The base-isolation system using the effective stiffness and damping ratio is also included in this formulation. in order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed solution the numerical results were compared with the reference solutions in each interaction problem. The effects of the liquid filling ratio and the stiffness of base-isolation system on the behavior of the liquid storage tanks are analyzed.
