  • The purpose of this research is twofold. The first is to develop the measures for evaluating performance of fingerprint sensor modules quantitatively and objectively. The second is to present the methodology for evaluating compatibilities among disparate fingerprint sensors. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation not of fingerprint authentication algorithm but of fingerprint sensors. Presented in this paper are several indicators and their measuring schemes such as the actual resolution of fingerprint images, the level of distortion by horizontal and vertical resolutions of fingerprint image, the intensity distribution for various illuminating conditions. Nine commercial sensor modules have been tested and the test results are expressed by using 95% confidence interval based on 50 acquired fingerprint images. The experimental results are compared with the manufacturer's sensor specification.

  • Biometric-based authentication can provide strong security guarantee about the identity of users. However, security of biometric data is particularly important as the compromise of the data will be permanent. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient protocol to transmit fingerprint images from a fingerprint sensor to a client by exploiting characteristics of fingerprint images. Because the fingerprint sensor is computationally limited, however, such encryption algorithm may not be applied to the full fingerprint images in real-time. To reduce the computational workload on the resource-constrained sensor, we apply the encryption algorithm to a specific bitplane of each pixel of the fingerprint image. We use the LSB as specific bitplane instead of MSB used to encrypt general multimedia contents because simple attacks can reveal the fingerprint ridge information even from the MSB-based encryption. Based on the experimental results, our proposed algorithm can reduce the execution time of the full encryption by a factor of six and guarantee both the integrity and the confidentiality without any leakage of the ridge information.

  • A multi-purpose sensor interface that provides dual-mode operation of fingerprint sensing and physiological signal detection is presented. The dual-mode sensing capability is achieved by utilizing inter-pixel shielding patterns as capacitive amplifier's input electrodes. A prototype readout circuit including a fingerprint panel for feasibility verification was fabricated in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. A single-channel readout circuit was implemented and multiplexed to scan two-dimensional fingerprint pixels, where adaptive calibration capability against pixel-capacitance variations was also implemented. Feasibility of the proposed multi-purpose interface was experimentally verified keeping low-power consumption less than 1.9 mW under a 3.3 V supply.

  • This paper proposes an advanced circuit for the fingerprint sensor signal processing. We increased the voltage between ridge and valley by modifying the parasitic capacitance eliminating circuit of sensor plate. The analog comparator was designed for comparing the sensor signal voltage with the reference signal voltage. We also propose an effective isolation strategy for removing noise and signal coupling of each sensor pixel. The fingerprint sensor circuit was designed and simulated, and the layout was performed.

  • Fingerprint recognition is concerned with fingerprint acquisition and matching. Our research was focused on a fingerprint matching method using an inkless fingerprint input sensor at the fingerprint acquisition step. Since an inkless fingerprint sensor produces a digital-image-processed fingerprint image, we did not consider noise that can happen while acquiring the fingerprint. And making the user attempt fingerprint input as random, we considered image distortion that translation and rotation are included as complex. NJTC algorithm is used for fingerprint identification and verification. The method to find the center of the fingerprint is added in the NJTC algorithm to supplement discrimination of fingerprint recognition. From this center point, we decided the optimum cropping size for effective matching with pixels and demonstrated that the proposed method has high discrimination and high efficiency.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a method for scoring the quality of a fingerprint image using the local information derived from the fingerprint image. In previous works for the quality measuring, most of the quality scores are related to the performance of a matching algorithm, and this makes the quality result more subjective. The quality score of a fingerprint image proposed in this work is sensor-independent, source-independent and matcher-independent one, and this concept of fingerprint sample quality results in effective improvement of the system performance. In this research, a new definition of fingerprint image quality and a new method for measuring the quality are proposed. For the experiments, several sub-databases from FVCs are used and the proposed method showed reasonable results for the test database. The proposed method can be used in various systems for the numerous purposes since the quality scores generated by the proposed method are based on the idea that the quality of fingerprint should be sensor-independent, source-independent and matcher-independent.

  • In this paper, a CMOS integrated detection circuit for capacitive type fingerprint sensor signal processing is described. We designed a detection circuit of charge-sharing sensing scheme. The proposed detection circuit increases the voltage difference between a ridge and valley. The test chip is composed of $160{\times}192$ array sensing cells (12 by $12.7{\;}mm^{2}$). The chip was fabricated on a 0.35 m standard CMOS process. Measured difference voltage between a ridge and valley was 0.95 V.

  • We proposes a new fingerprint minutia matching algorithm which matches the fingerprint minutiae by using adaptive distance. In general, fingerprint is deformed by pressure and orientation when a user press his fingerprint to sensor. These nonlinear deformations change the distance between minutiae and reduce verification rate. We define the adaptive distance using ridge frequency. Adaptive distance normalizes the distance between minutiae and compensates for nonlinear deformation. Our algorithm can distinguish two different fingerprints better and is more robust. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to using Euclidean distance.

  • This paper proposes an advanced circuit for the capacitive type fingerprint sensor signal processing and an effective isolation structure for minimizing an electrostatic discharge(ESD) influence and for removing a signal coupling noise of each sensor pixel. The proposed detection circuit increases the voltage difference between a ridge and valley about $80\%$ more than old circuit. The test chip is composed of $160\;\times\;192$ array sensing cells $(9,913\times11,666\;um^2).$ The sensor plate area is $58\;\times\;58\;um^2$ and the pitch is 60um. The image resolution is 423 dpi. The chip was fabricated on a 0.35um standard CMOS process. It successfully captured a high-quality fingerprint image and performed the registration and identification processing. The sensing and authentication time is 1 sec(.) with the average power consumption of 10 mW at 3.0V. The reveal ESD tolerance is obtained at the value of 4.5 kV.

  • In this paper, the localization algorithm for improving the accuracy of the positioning using the Wi-Fi fingerprint using the normal distribution probability and the built-in typed accelerometer sensor, the gyroscope sensor of smartphone in the indoor environment is proposed. The experiments for analyzing the performance of the proposed algorithm were carried out at the region of the horizontal and vertical 20m * 10m in the engineering school building of our university, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the fingerprint and the DR (dead reckoning) while user is moving according to the assigned region. As a result, the maximum error distance in the proposed algorithm was decreased to 2cm and 36cm compared with two algorithms, respectively. In addition to this, the maximum error distance was also less than compared with two algorithms as 16.64cm and 36.25cm, respectively. It can be seen that the fingerprint map searching time of the proposed algorithm was also reduced to 0.15 seconds compared with two algorithms.
