  • When evaluating the performance of a NPD(New Product Development) project, it is common to evaluate the project performance according to the achievement of the planned goal in terms of time, quality and cost management, which are usually three main constraints of the project. The evaluation of the financial factors by which sales contributed to the return of the company is more influential. This is why companies need to increase sales and raise profits. Therefore, it is more reasonable to evaluate the sales performance of NPD projects over a certain period of time against the input costs. At this time, we can analyze the causes of inefficient projects and compare them with other projects and find out how to improve the sales performance to help the company increase its competitiveness. In this paper, we analyze the relative efficiency of the sales performance on the input of the projects by using the actual sales in the period of one year after mass production of the NPD projects of 'S' company in ICT industry. Input factors include developer resource and development cost for the NPD reported after the project has been completed, the delay weeks for the schedule targeted at the project planning stage, and the number of quality issues due to development design faults during initial mass-production. The sales figure and the contribution margin of the product after one year from the start of mass production are defined as the output factors. In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of the projects by using data envelope analysis (DEA). As a result, we found out the reason of the inefficient project of DMUs according to the differences in the characteristics of the efficient and inefficient B2B markets based on the result of DEA of NPD projects. Thus, the goal of this paper is to identify strategies for improving sales performance of NPD projects in inefficient markets.

  • In recognition of the transportation problems of the present and to prepare for the ever increasing demands of the future, government decided to develop the magnetically levitated train domestically and started R&D program office in Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals(KIMM). This office since has established three step by step goals : first to develop a 40 passenger exhibition vehicle for Daejon EXPO'93, second to develop the low to mid-speed maglev system for urban public transportation by 1997 and finally the high speed inter-city maglev train by year 2001. The first two maglev systems will use attractive levitation-LIM driven technologies and these technologies are the ones currently being developed by this office and others. The maglev train system is a product of wide range of technologies from electro-technologies to civil engineering technologies. Some of the technologies are currently available but more have to be developed in the near future and these technologies are owned by or to be developed by various institutions within the science & technology community. The level of the technologies available at the present time are still very rudimentary and their basis are very narrow. Recently we have made a few successes in terms of levitation and propulsion but they are only with small scale modules and results are very qualitative at best. A great deal of development work has yet to be done to refine the technologies and to gain confidence. Full scale levitation/propulsion modules will be tested on the curved guideway within 6 months by this office and another institution. This paper reviews the current status of the maglev technologies in Korea and discuss the development strategies. The Korean maglev program is very ambitious and the schedule is even more so. A steady financial support and strong system engineering and integration are essential to the success of this program.

  • In recent years, the population structure has been changed by the progresses of 6th-industrialization and transportation in farming areas. This study aims to suggest a regional development plan of farming areas in accordance with the demographic changes. Population structure indicators were derived from previous studies and literature review in order to identify the types of farming areas. Demographic indicators separated to depopulation and population growth in farming areas through a standardized scoring method. This research found that the division of economy is not only the most important division in any other regional development divisions but also necessary to develop new sources of non-farm income through traditional culture, natural environment. In the social division, it is necessary to secure the facilities for the formation of a sense of community to multicultural families and existing residents in farming areas. In the environmental division, it is desirable to improve the quality and satisfaction of life for residents such as the sidewalk and park that utilize ecological environment, culture, history for both depopulation and population region. In the physical division, there is a need for improvement of the facilities of basic living infrastructure service such as roads, water supply and sewerage systems. In the institution division, sustainable financial support of the central government policy for farming areas is crucial for the improvement of residential environment in the farming areas of depopulation and population region.

  • This New-Town Project has been proposed to improve the environments of deprived residential areas. This paper investigates the distribution levels of the participating parties' monetary surpluses from New-Town Projects through a case study and tentatively suggests political issues and measures. The methodology followed includes a thorough survey of the precedent theories, including a literature review concerning issues and tasks that have been raised since the development was initiated. A general assessment of the complete project is also provided with a broad perspective of the background settings. Secondly, the case study of Gil-Eum will be the focus for identifying the mechanism for the project's profit distribution levels, then for constructing a set of measuring procedures according to the stages of the project and the participating parties. This set of procedures that has been drawn out from recognizing the system, is applied to the target project and measures the amount of profit gained from each stage of the development. This also aids in collating information about the procedural arguments concerning the financial gains of the operations that have been provided. This project falls under the 'Urban and Residential Environment Improvement Act', and based on the results of each stage, the measurement of the profits of the participating parties is analyzed.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influence of socio-economic status of potential consumers on the types of senior congregate housing(SCH) among 4 urban areas(Seoul Metropolitan area, Busan, Gwangaju, and Daejun). This study was part or a research series to develop SCH which meets the korean situation. The Questionnaire used for the final analysis involved 1006 people and SPSS Windows program was used for statistical analysis. The opinion about SCH should differ among the 4 urban areas according to Socio-Economic Status(SES). The results of this study were as follows: The opinions on SCH varied in each region according to SES indicating that diverse constructions of senior housing to meet selective needs of the old can create high demand in a construction market. In order to induce active participation of the private sector, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, rather than the Ministry of Health and Welfare, should be in charge of the development of SCH. This is desirable in the perspective of developing new types of housing as for general housing. In this case, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation should consider geographic locations and environmental factors of each city. Moreover, the successful development of SCH needs an effort to reexamine an appropriate development plan rather than adopting the cases of developed countries without criticism. In terms of policies, the government should provide financial support for building sharing space, give an exception on a measurement rate, assist in the education of supervisors and establish a management system and so on.

  • As a result of the development of heavy and chemical industries during the Economic Development Plan, Korean shipbuilding industry expanded its capacity rapidly and became a strategic export industry. The 1973 Arab oil crisis and the subsequent doubling of oil prices greatly reduced world demand for tankers and the market was crashed as numberous orders for tankers were cancelled in Japan and Europe. Under these circumstances, Korean Shipping industry also experienced a decrease in overseas demand for shipbuilding. The Korean government established the 'planned shipbuilding' scheme. The primary purpose of the scheme was to develop the shipbuilding industry, to link the industry to the shipping industry and to develop both industries together. However, Japanese shipping established goals linking with macro-national economic policy, such as saving foreign currencies and freight of importing goods, also assisting reconstruction and development of shipbuilding industry. To accomplish these goals, Japanese government used several policy tools such as financial assistance, law, guidance.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the job satisfaction and business attitudes of restaurant owners in order to explore solutions for improving restaurant management. The results were as follows : 1) The motive for starting a restaurant business was vocational aptitude \longrightarrow possibilities \longrightarrow good income : 2) In terms of job satisfaction, most respondents were satisfied with both the work itself and the income. It was also observed that the younger owners were more satisfied with their jobs than the older owners : 3) Increased costs, including labor and food costs, was indicated as the biggest problem in restaurant management. Respondents also perceived labor shortage as one of the most difficult problems. Men were more likely than women to consider the following problems as being more serious: rent, financial problems, taxes, regulation restrictions, menu development and customer complaints. It was found that as the size of the restaurants grew, the respondents perceived the shortage of labor as the hardest part of running a business : 4) Respondents agreed that employing good foodservice workers was the most important part of foodservice management. Owners also believed that they needed more research time for menu and service development 5) To be successful, the restaurant owners paid the most careful attention to food taste. Service, sanitation, and menu development were also emphasized. Respondents stressed the focus on service, good relationships, diligence, and faithfulness in order to be a good restaurant owner. The results of this research suggest that restaurant owners should have more professional conscientiousness to succeed in their own businesses, as well as improve the quality of the foodservice industry. Other important aspects related to the overall improved quality of the foodservice industry are: the continuation of government support, the enlargement of educational opportunities and greater respect for foodservice employees. • This paper aims to examine the characteristics of social enterprises in Jinju City, Korea and to provide policy recommendations for promoting the competitiveness of local social enterprises. There are 11 social enterprises in Jinju City that are certified by central and local governments. The survey shows that the majority of social enterprises in Jinju City are based on the local community and their activities are public in nature, including supporting the self-reliance of local under-privileged class or contributing to local socio-economic development. However, it is also revealed that local social enterprises have a great deal of difficulty in making a profit. Particularly, they have much trouble with sales of their services and products, largely due to the vulnerability of marketing and financial ability. This means that the local social enterprises are not capable of being viable in a severe market competition. Thus I suggest some important policy recommendation for invigorating local social enterprises, including the reform of governance system, expansion of public purchase of the products made by local social enterprises, and the facilitation of inter-organizational networking among local social economy agents.

  • Government policy supporting the fashion industry in Korea has focused on the future development of rising fashion designer's brands, and as a part of this support, several Fashion Creative Studios are presently operated. The purpose of this study is to identify the meaning of these facilities and suggest development strategies for their effective utilization. This paper presents a conceptual understanding based on a literature review, and deduces the direction of Fashion Creative Studios through an exploratory analysis of various case studies and in-depth interviews with five designers, who have graduated from the Seoul Fashion Creative Studio. The results are as follows. Firstly, fashion educational institutions have to provide sufficient information about the Fashion Creative Studios to students. They can also consider adding short-term residencies to the curriculum in which students prepare collections or portfolios for the studios. Secondly, Fashion Creative Studios are required to intensify business and marketing programs to increase real-world support. It would be helpful to provide 1:1 management programs with several segmented stages for the design brands, or connect them to investors who could provide financial support and business expansion. Thirdly, Fashion Creative Studios need to find a way to strengthen textile differentiation and craft characteristics to increase designer brand competitiveness. Broadening participation with textile designers, connecting with experts and ateliers, and promoting collaboration with artists and artisans in the Arts Creative Studios can be further examined to this end.
