  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis and comparisons of active power filter (APF) and hybrid power filter (HPF) systems, given terminal constraints of harmonic compensations in nonlinear loads. Despite numerous publications for the two types of filters, the features and differences between them have not been clearly explained. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the operations of a HPF inverter along with those of passive power filters (PPFs). It also includes their effects on the power factor at the grid. In addition, a theoretical analysis and a systematic comparison between the APF and HPF systems are addressed based on system parameters such as the source voltage, output power, reactive component size, and power factor at the grid terminals. The converter kVA ratings and dc-link voltage requirements for both topologies are considered in the presented comparisons

  • A model of an advanced aircraft electric power system is developed and studied under variable-speed constant-frequency (VSCF) operation. The frequency of the generator's output voltage is varied from 400-Hz to 800-Hz for different loading scenarios. Power conversions are obtained using 12-pulse power converters. To reduce the harmonic contents of the generator output waveforms, two high-pass passive filters are designed and installed one at a time at the generator terminals. The performance of the two passive filters is compared according to their losses and effectiveness. The power quality characteristics of the studied VSCF aircraft electric power system are presented and the effectiveness of the proposed filter is demonstrated through compliance with the newly published aircraft electrical standards MIL-STD-704F.

  • The dark-field laser scattering system has been developed to inspect surface defects in infrared cut-off filters and then laser scattering characteristics against the defects are investigated. The qualitative analysis for the reliable and accurate detection performance is described through the correlation between incident angles of a laser and viewing ones of a camera. In this paper, reliable and important information with laser scattering is given for the surface defect inspection of IR filters. Its performance has been verified through various experiments.

  • Computational simulation has been performed to design the filtration system for Korea model IGCC demonstration plant. The filtration system for optimal design has four effective filters corresponding to the clusters composed of a group of ceramic candle filters. It was analyzed how the different entrance geometry influences the flow field and the particle behavior in the filtration system. The particle loading is minimum when the gas mixed with particles flows into the filter vessel with a shroud tube through a tangential inlet. However, the particle loading is maximum when the gas with particles enters the filter vessel through a normal inlet which a entrance tube extended from. By controling adequately both conditions of inflow, the filtration system can be operated optimally to prolong the filter life-time and to save the energy for cleaning filters.

  • Removal teals of Soxmox were performed using low density ceramic filters doped with various catalysts. Disc type (50 mmO.Dx10 mmt) low density ceramic filters were doped with three different catalysts such as Cu to remove SOx and NOx, and Mn and Co to remove NOx. The air permeabilities and specific surface areas were 40~50cc/min.cm2.cmH2O and 4.1~8.88 m2/g, respectively. Also, the peak pore sizes of catalyst support were 3~5nm. Tests were focused to search optimum operating temperatures for different catalysts. It was found that as the CuO content increases, SOx removal efficiency was increased. NOx removal efficiencies for Mn, Cu and Co, were 85% at 30$0^{\circ}C$, 90% at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 90% at 45$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a new design algorithm to optimize the withdrawal weighted SAW ladder devices, Withdrawal weighting on SAW resonators gives enhanced bandwidth and transition band characteristics, so an optimization algorithm was developed for ladder type SAW filters. To illustrate the validity of the technique, this method was applied to the design of RF band CDMA TX SAW filters, and the design results were confirmed to show good agreement with experimental performance.

  • Conventional EMI filters have tried to use an active EMI filter as a series by the series connection of two EMI filters for CM and DM noise. However, the proposed filter is formed into one circuit by using the active EMI filter which is able to filter CM and DM noise components together. As a result, the active EMI filter showed the outstanding quality in mass and volume under 50% and electric characteristics have been compared to the passive EMI filter in approximately 150kHz~10MHz. Furthermore, the proposed circuit has simple circuit components by comparing with the series EMI filters, and electrical characteristics are similar. The noise have been attenuated to maximum 20dBuV.

  • Automatically tuned passive filters can improve power quality to a great extent in power systems. A novel three-phase shunt auto-tuned filter is designed to effectively compensate source current harmonics and to provide reactive power required by the non-linear load, which draws a highly reactive, harmonic-rich current from the supply. An artificial neural network (ANN) based controller selects filter component values in accordance with reactive power requirement and harmonic compensation. Traditional passive filters are permanently connected to the system and draw large amounts of source current even under light load conditions. By using auto-tuned filters, the passive filter components can be controlled according to load variations and, hence, draw only required source currents. The selection is done by the ANN with the help of a properly tuned knowledge base to provide instantaneous compensation using a digital controller.

  • This paper presents a filter analysis of conducted Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) in switching power converters (SPC) based on noise impedances. The EMI characteristics of SPC can be analytically deduced from a circuit theoretical viewpoint. The analytical noise model is investigated to get a full understanding of the EMI mechanism. It is shown that with suitable and justified model, filters pertinent to EMI noise is investigated. The EMI noise is identified by time domain measurements associated with an isolated half-bridge ac-dc converter. Practical filters like LC filter, ${\pi}$ filter and complete EMI filters are investigated. The proposed analysis and results can provide a guideline for improving the effectiveness of filtering schemes in SPC. Experimental results are also included to verify the validity of the proposed method. The results obtained satisfy the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) class A and class B regulations.

  • Noise can make surrounding environments inferior and deteriorates operation efficiency, and it can bring aural damage as well as give a person psychological stress. Therefore, necessity of study about noise control is increased for better labor conditions and agreeable habitat. In this paper, implementation of active mufflers using a stable IIR adaptive filters is presented. The IIR filter structure is more effective when acoustic feedback exists, but the adaptive IIR filters could be unstable when the filter algorithm is not yet converged. A stabilizing process for adaptive IIR filter is introduced in this paper. Experiments using a TMS320C32 digital signal processor have performed to show the effectiveness of a proposed algorithm.
