  • This is a comparative cultural study on the cultural dimensions of the Korean original film and its Chinese remake film. This research is based on the cultural dimension study by Dutch organizing psychologist Geert Hofstede (1991). In this research I have tried to compare cultural dimensions that are shown implicitly in the original Korean film of "Blind" and its Chinese remake, entitled "The Witness", in terms of the narrative structures.

  • Since the placement of the THAAD missiles has recently cooled the relationship between Korea and China, many Korea-China joint films and entertainment businesses have collapsed. To make matters worse, there is also many opinions for "Korea-China joint film useless" in China through the results of many Korea-China joint films. In my opinion, the causes of failures of the Korea-China joint films are the lack of understanding and experience of Korean filmmakers in the Chinese film industry. So, By examining the history of Chinese cinema in this paper, I want to establish the character formation of the Chinese film industry. And cause a criminal-thriller genre has to undergo more stringer censorship than any other genre, I will introduce the production process of remake of the Korean film . By introducing the censorship method of the Chinese film industry and the actual cases applied, I want to help understand the present status of Chinse film industry. Also, I intend to give some proposals to Korean filmmakers preparing a Korea-China joint film, and express my brief opinion for the development of the Korea-China joint film industry.

  • This study explores the factors contributing to the commercial success of remade films across countries by analyzing the original Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs and its remakes in the United States (The Departed), South Korea (New World), and Japan (Double Face). This paper analyzes the factors of success and failure based on Konstantin Verevis's remake film theory, focusing on aspects such as the selection of film texts, visual language, narrative structure, and cultural intertextuality. The analysis reveals that successful remade films enhance their visual appeal and strengthen emotional connections with audiences through structural completeness of the original text, creative narrative reconstruction, and differentiated cinematography. Conversely, the failure of some remakes is attributed to excessive replication of the original or the lack of consideration for cultural intertextuality, failing to resonate with audiences. This study emphasizes the need for an approach that maintains the identity of the original while incorporating new cultural sensibilities to achieve success in remakes. It aims to provide practical guidance that promotes multicultural exchange and cooperation in the global film market. The importance of strategic considerations in remaking films that reflect various cultural contexts is highlighted.

The film is the first costume drama in Korea, which is remake work of Lt;Les Liasions dangereuses, 1782> in the age of the King Jeongjo in Joseon Dynasty. And is comic costume drama that the story goes as a man of the noblest birth debuts as a filthy novel writer. • In this research, the different scenes of each film, the Korean film <The man from nowhere> and the Indian film <Rocky Handsome> are analyzed. Based on the analysis, with the cultural dimension theory of Geert Hofstede, the cultural differences of Korea and India are found. 4 cultural dimensions are applied for the analysis, 'Individualism-Collectivism', 'Masculinity- Femininity', 'Power of Distance', 'Indulgence-Restraint'. In conclusion, the characteristics of Korean society can be defined as 'Collectivism', 'Masculinity', 'Narrow power of distance', 'Restraint', while the characteristics of Indian society can be defined as 'Individualism', 'Femininity', 'Wide power of distance', 'Indulgence'. Additionally, it was confirmed that 'Action' and 'Love' can be identified as the most important cultural characteristics that can gain sympathy in both India and Korea. Of course, there is a limitation to generalize the whole society only through the analysis of two films. However, this study can be meaningful in understanding the culture of Korea and India with relativistic perspectives based on the analysis of two films which have similar narrative structures and main characters.

  • In literature it is not only the meaning of words which matters, but also their texture matters i.e. their rhythm, colour and style are relevant and none of these natures can be reduced to an item of information. The texture is also important in film languages, especially the rhythm. In order to make the storytelling rhythm visible, a new concept of 'the Rhythm Chart Analysis Method (RCAM)' has been devised in this research and used for analysis. By analyzing original films and remakes in Korean and Chinese, one can find out that different countries have different storytelling rhythms i.e. the same story can be told in different rhythms. The central idea in Korean films is portrayed at the end, which is a typical characteristic of Korean films. And as the defining moment does not occur suddenly the audience can naturally get immersed into the story. But Chinese films communicate with the audience in a more direct way. It directly mentions characteristics of each actor in such a way that it is telling rather than showing. The information of the movie is given to the audience in the initial stages of the movie. Rhythm is as important as story and information. And through this we can find out the cultural differences from the different storytelling rhythms.

  • This study provides an empirical analysis of box office performance for animation movies released in Korea between 2003 and 2008. Two dependent variables are both the number of audiences in the whole country and the number of audiences in Seoul. Such independent variables are employed : power of distributors, the number of screens, release time, sequel/remake, awards, film ratings, nationality, online reviews, and critics' reviews. For the total number of audiences in the whole country, significant variables are the number of screens, the power of USA distributors, Summer release, and online reviews. Since there is no analysis for box office performance for animation movies released in Korean theaters, this study will be considered to be meaningful.
