Yacon(Polymina sonchifolia POEPP), an indigenous Andean natural resource food plant, was imported as a new root crop from New Zealand in 1986. However the chemical composition and planting system of it have not been research in Korea. The experimental results for the optimum planting densities and mulching effect are as follows. Height of the main stem of yacon was grown linear from July to October, is showed more fast growth as density increased, and showed highest in 70 ${\times}$ 55cm density. The tiller was bubed 3 month after planting but there was no significant difference among mulching, non-mulching condition and planting density. The fresh weight of root of mulching condition was heavier than that in non-mulching condition and 70 ${\times}$ 40cm mulching condition. In mulching treatment, number of roots in dense planting were more than that in sparse planting. The effect of mulching was not shown significantly in root diameter and root length.

The purpose of this study was to analyze microbial hazards for cultivation environments and personal hygiene of strawberry and tomato farms at the growth and harvesting stage. Samples were collected from thirty strawberry farms and forty tomato farms located in Korea and tested for Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. To investigate the change in the distribution of the S. aureus and B. cereus, a total of 4,284 samples including air born, soil or medium, mulching film, harvest basket, groves and irrigation water etc. were collected from eight strawberry farms and nine tomato farms for one year. As a result, total S. aureus and B. cereus in all samples were detected. Among the total bacteria of strawberry farms, S. aureus (glove: $0{\sim}2.1Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}3.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~4.1 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}3.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$), B. cereus (glove: $0{\sim}2.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}4.8Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~5.3 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.5Log\;CFU/100cm^2$) were detected in all samples. The total bacteria of tomato farms, S. aureus (glove: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}5.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~6.1 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$), B. cereus (glove: $0{\sim}4.0Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, harvest basket: $0{\sim}4.3Log\;CFU/100cm^2$, soil or culture media: 0~5.9 Log CFU/g, mulching film: $0{\sim}4.7Log\;CFU/100cm^2$) were detected in all samples. The contamination of S. aureus and B. cereus were detected in soil, mulching film and harvest basket from planting until harvest to processing, with the highest count recorded from the soil. But S. aureus and B. cereus were not detected in irrigation water samples. The incidence of S. aureus and B. cereus in hydroponics culture farm were less than those in soil culture. The amount of S. aureus and B. cereus detected in strawberry and tomato farms were less than the minimum amount required to produce a toxin that induces food poisoning. In this way, the degree of contamination of food poisoning bacteria was lower in the production environment of the Korea strawberry and tomato, but problems can be caused by post-harvest management method. These results will be used as fundamental data to create a manual for sanitary agricultural environment management, and post-harvest management should be performed to reduce the contamination of hazardous microorganisms.

As the world marks the adoption of the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change, a promising movement for carbon neutrality is taking shape. This agreement would be needed to build a truly global coalition for carbon neutrality by 2050. Greenhouse gas(GHGs) emissions from agriculture come from livestock such as cows, agricultural soils and rice production has been reported by 10% in 2019. Rice cultivation would be reduced a GHGs and thus this research has conducted to minimize the emission of greenhouse gas with the mulching methodology using a biodegradable film in dry hill seeded rice and to conserve the environment through a cultural and ecological weed control instead of chemicals. We have developed the 5th mulching dry hill seeder with the biodegradable film to determine the possibility of stable rice cultivation. There were so many difficulties and constraints in the field operations such as film mulching, hill seeding and effective weed control. The mulching dry hill seeder was so good performance in the 5th trial but the biodegradable film tested was so faster in terms of biodegradation before the heading stage of the rice plant and thus there was not highly effective weed control which is ongoing research with a good performance since 2020.
In the polythylene film mulching(P.E. mulching) culture, soil temperature ranked in the order of clear P.E.-, black P.E.-, and non-mulching. The difference in temperature between P.E mulching and non-mulching conditions was greatest in maximum temperature in fine day. Under the dry season, soil water content ranked in the order of black P.E.-, clear P.E.- and non-mulched soil. Under the rainy season, however, the content in non-mulched soil was higher than in the mulched soils, while there was little difference between the two colored films. In three phases of soil, liquid phase ratio was higher and gaseous phase ratio was lower in mulched soil than in non-mulched soil under the dry season. However, the opposite result was observed under the rainy season. The content of soil organic matter in red pepper field applied with the compost and mixed-fertilizer ranked in the order of black P.E.-, clear P.E.- and non-mulching conditions. However, the content between mulching and non-mulching differed little in peanut field applied with mixed-fertilizer. In red pepper field, soil nitrogen content in mulching conditions slightly differed from that in non-mulching conditions during the dry season. The soil nitrogen content decreased rapidly 86 days after fertilizer application during the rainy season. In peanut field, there was little difference in the content between the two conditions. The nitrogen content in the leaves of red pepper and peanut was much higher in P.E mulching than in non-mulching.
High temperature during sprout emergence period of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a major limitation to the yield of fall-grown potato in Korea. To explore the possibility of improving the yield of fall-grown potato through recycled paper mulching, the changes of soil environment and the growth and yield of potato cv. Daeji as affected by three mulching treatments of non-mulched control, recycled paper mulching (RPM), and black polyethylene film-mulching (BPFM) were examined over two fall seasons at Suwon, Korea. The mulching materials were a recycled mulch paper with 110 g/$m^2$ and a thickness of 0.1 mm, which was manufactured from old corrugated containers for this experiment and a commercial black polyethylene film with a thickness of 0.01mm. On an average throughout the growing period, the soil temperature with RPM at the 5-cm depth was lower by 0.4-1.1$^{\circ}C$ than that of the control. The maximum temperature during daytime in RPM was lowered by approximately 1 to 5$^{\circ}C$ according to the weather condition during emergence period, the difference being great on a fine day. The soil temperature with BPFM was much higher than the control. The effect of the mulching treatments diminished as the canopy became developed. The mulching treatments were more advantageous than the control in the conservation of soil water. Moreover, RPM and BPFM efficiently suppressed the occurrence of weeds until the potato harvest. RPM improved the emergence significantly due to lower soil temperature, whereas BPFM showed much poorer emergence than the control. Growth after emergence and yield were significantly higher in RPM than in the control and BPFM. It was concluded that the significantly improved yield in RPM compared to that in the control was mainly due to the improvement of the sprout emergence and tuber growth accompanied by lower soil temperature and better conservation of soil water.

In this study, two types of biodegradable film prototypes were produced using plastic resin containing rice powder. The application of these biodegradable films in sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam) fields and their impacts of plant growth, yield, and the soil environment were assessed, in comparison with Polyethylene (PE) film. The light transmittance of the biodegradable film containing 30% of 350 mesh rice powder (BF30-350RP) was 0.8%, which was lower than the 2.0% light transmittance of the biodegradable film containing 40% of 500 mesh rice powder (BF40-500RP) and 2.7% light transmittance of PE film. Surface temperature measurements on clear day indicated that the PE film exhibited the lowest temperature, with the minimal difference observed between BF40-500RP and BF30-350RP. Assessment of the damage ratio resulting from agricultural work revealed a ranking of 0.4% for the PE film, 3.3% for BF500-400RP, and 5.3% for BF350-30RP. Visible decomposition of BF40-500RP and BF30-350RP commenced after 40 and 30 days of outdoor exposure, reaching 62.3% and 70.4% decomposition at 90 days post-exposure, respectively. The decomposition of biodegradable films applied to sweetpotato fields progressed more slowly in BF40-500RP than in BF30-350RP. The BF40-500RP film on the surface of the ridges was decomposed by 5%, 30%, 55%, and 90% after 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after planting sweetpotato cuttings, respectively. Both types of biodegradable films at the ridge and furrow borders were completely decomposed after 75 days of sweetpotato planting. In a field where the surface was sealed by mulching without growing sweetpotatoes, the soil moisture and its deviation were lower in the order of PE film, BF40-500RP, and BF30-350RP, but the differences were not significant. The soil temperature was higher for PE film mulching than for the biodegradable films containing rice powder, but the differences were small. Two months after sweetpotato planting, the daily average soil moisture decreased by 2.5%point for BF30-350RP mulching, 1.5%point for BF40-500RP mulching, and 1.1%point for PE film mulching over seven days. Soil temperature was similar for both biodegradable film mulches, but increased steadily for the PE film mulch, reaching a daily average of 0.1℃ higher than for the biodegradable films. Sweetpotato vine growth and tuber yield were similar for all the mulching films tested.

Mulching technique is used to control the temperature and moisture content of soil by covering the ground surface. Most kinds of mulching film are made of polyethylene which is non-biodegradable synthetic polymer. Utilizing these films has been one of the main sources in soil pollution. Thus residual films under the ground should be removed after a certain period of time. Therefore, an alternative mulching material made of biodegradable functional paper is considered instead of non-biodegradable films. The mulching sheet produced from paper basis has a functionality to be naturally degraded and then recycled to the bio-materials on soil. In this study, the paper based-mulching sheet coated with biodegradable polymer was specially produced using a laboratory bar coater. Coating colors prepared by dissolving PBS/PLA in chloroform were applied to kraft paper. The mechanical strength and aging properties of this mulching sheet were investigated. The burst strength of polymer-coated paper was decreased with the increase of the PBS ratio in PBS/PLA blends, and, in particular, 30/70 blending condition led to good stability in heat-aging atmosphere for 60 days.

This experiment had been conducted to determine optimal culture conditions for the growth and cut flowers of Calla (Zantedeschia 'Black Magic' 'Golden Affair') in highlands. Tubers of calla 'Black Magic' was treated with 0, 100, and $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration of $GA_3$. ABA content in tubers and roots were twice higher ($20-25pmol{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) in control than in $GA_3$ treated tubers and roots. ABA contents in tubers was not consistent but ABA contents in roots increased with increasing $GA_3$ concentration. However ABA is in inverse proportion to GA. It was mean that GA of high contents was ABA of low contents. Calla 'Golden Affair' was treated with different mulching materials (Control, black PE, Reflective film, Rice hull) and $GA_3$ concentrations (0, 50, 100 and $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). It was largest in the length of flower at mulching of reflective film, Rice hull and it was greatest in the number of cut flowers at the treated with $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$, Therefore the proper condition was at $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ with reflective film mulching.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different polyethylene film (P.E. film) for mulching on the changes in soil temperature and the production of good feathered apple nursery trees. M.9 rootstocks with stem diameter of 9.1~11.0 mm were planted in plots covered with different P.E. film (i.e., transparent P.E. film, black P.E. film, and bare soil as control). Three weeks after planting, the rootstocks were veneer grafted with 'Sinano Sweet' apple cultivar. In the middle of June, BA was sprayed to nursery for inducing feathering during the growing season. The soil temperature of the control was higher than air temperature by about $0.7^{\circ}C$ from mid April to early October, and that of P.E. film mulching was about $1{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the control. The soil temperature under transparent P.E. film was about $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ higher than that under black P.E. film. The diurnal range of soil temperature under the black P. E. film was lowest among all treatments. The P.E. film mulching induced better tree growth and feathering than bare soil. Percentage of good feathering apple nursery of black P.E. film was highest among all treatments because the soil temperature unuder black P.E. film in the early growing season was higher than that of the control and the number of days when the maximum soil temperature was over $35^{\circ}C$ in the summer was lower than that under the transparent P.E. film.
