In this study, the residual strength of CFRP filament winding pressure vessel after low velocity impact was evaluated quantitatively. After impact test, the pressure vessel was sectioned to produce 25 mm-wide ring specimen and the bursting pressure of this specimen was measured. A finite element model was also fabricated to investigate the deformation and stress distribution characteristics of the impacted CFRP vessel. The degradation of the residual strength along with the increase of impact energy was successfully measured and reviewed.

Bi-2223/Ag HTS wires have been fabricated by the PIT(powder in tube)process. Intermediate annealing was carried out to increase the homogenization and uniformity of the superconducting filaments embedded in the silver matrix during the deformation process that is important to sustain the engineering critical current density in long superconducting wire. Intermediate annealing act to release the deformation hardening of the superconducting wires during drawing process. Rolling parameters were investigated to roll the superconducting tapes with uniform thickness, width and winding tensions. Critical current of 60 m long superconducting tapes was measured 54.3 A continuously after final sintering heat treatment. The phase analysis of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting tapes are examined by the XRD.

In this paper, we persent the results of on experimental investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of new type of concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic circular tubes (i.e., hybrid CFFT, HCFFT) which are suggested in order to mitigate the problems associated with the concrete filled steel-concrete composite tube (CFT) and the concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic tube (CFFT). It is found that when the HCFFT is used in the construction of pile foundation the HCFFT pile can transfer axial as well as flexural loads from the superstructure to the underground effectively in comparison with CFT and CFFT piles.

The main objective of this paper is to module design and pressure relief test a new type of polymer gapless surge arrester for power distribution line. Metal oxide surge arrester for most electric power system applications, power distribution line and electric train are now being used extensively to protect overvoltage due to lightning. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. When breakdown of gapless elements in a surge arrester occurs due to flashover, fault short current flows through the arrester and internal pressure of the arrester rises. The pressure rise can usually be limited by fitting a pressure relief diaphragm and transferring the arc from the inside to the outside of the housing. However, there is possibility of porcelain fragmentation caused by the thermal shock, pressure rise, etc. Non-fragmenting of the housing is the most desired way to prevent damage to other equipment. The pressure change which is occurred by flashover become discharge energy. This discharge energy raises to damage arrester housing and arrester housing is dispersed as small fragment. Therefore, the pressure relief design is requested to obstruct housing dispersion.

The main objective of this research effort was to develope the performance of C/SiC composites manufactured by LSI (Liquid Silicon Infiltration) method for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system and ensure the performance analysis technique. The various carbon preform were manufactured by filament winding, tape rolling, involute layup and stack molding process. For the best performance of thermal and mechanical properties, many process conditions were tested and selected by varying preform, the content of SiC, temperature, impregnation resin and chemical vapour reaction. In conclusion, the high performance and reliability of C/SiC composite were proved for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system. And the performance analysis technique related to mathematical ablation model was originated.

The motor case for the KSLV-I KM is the first satellite launch vehicle ever to be developed by Korea to deliver the 100 kg class satellite into Earth's low orbit. This SLV is made of two stages, and the 2nd stage is made of solid rocket motor. The motor case of the KM is made of all composite materials except for the interface structures. Manufacturing process for the motor case such as insulation, filament winding for the motor case, fabrications for the interface structures will be discussed in this paper.

This study performed the progressive failure analysis of adhesive joints of a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome by using a cohesive zone model. In order to determine the input parameters of a cohesive element for numerical analysis, the interlaminar fracture toughness values in modes I and II and in the mixed mode for the adhesive joints of the composite pressure vessel were obtained by a material test. All specimens were manufactured by the filament winding method. A mechanical test was performed on adhesively bonded double-lap joints to determine the shear strength of the adhesive joints and verify the reliability of the cohesive zone model for progressive failure analysis. The test results showed that the shear strength of the adhesive joints was 32MPa; the experiment and analysis results had an error of about 4.4%, indicating their relatively good agreement. The progressive failure analysis of a composite pressure vessel with an adhesively bonded dome performed using the cohesive zone model showed that only 5.8% of the total adhesive length was debonded and this debonded length did not affect the structural integrity of the vessel.

The deformation and burst pressure of composite motor case highly depends on fiber material properties. Therefore, measuring exact fiber material properties is a priority item to develop a advanced composite motor case. However, the fiber material properties in composite motor case is very sensitive on the various processing variables (equipment, operator and environmental condition etc..)and size effect, so the fiber material properties can't be measured exactly from the existing specimen test method. This paper suggests a newly developed test method, hoop ring test, that is capable of pressure testing with ring specimens extracted from real composite motor case. The results of hoop ring test showed excellent agreement with measured fiber material properties from hydro-burst test with full scale composite motor cases.

A flywheel system is an electromechanical energy storage device that stores energy by rotating a rotor. The rotating part, supported by magnetic bearings, consists of the metallic shaft, composite rims of fiber-reinforced materials, and a hub that connects the rotor to the shaft. The delamination in the fiber wound composite rotor often lowered the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. In this work, an advanced hybrid composite rotor with a split hub was designed to both overcome the delamination problem in composite rim and prevent separation between composite rim and metallic shaft within all range of rotational speed. It was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite clement method. In order to demonstrate the predominant perfom1ance of the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, a high spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm. Four radial strains and another four circumferential strains were measured using a wireless telemetry system. These measured strains were in excellent agreement with the FE analysis. Most importantly, the radial strains were reduced using the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, and all of them were compressive. As a conclusion, a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the proposed flywheel rotor was achieved, and it can lower the radial stresses within the composite rotor, enhancing the performance of the flywheel rotor.
As a fundamental structural element of construction, a pile is constructed to transfer loads from superstructure to foundation. In general, since the pile foundation is constructed in the ground or ground under water, it is difficult to protect from the damages due to moisture and/or salt which create corrosive environment and it is even more difficult to estimate its durability. In this study, in order to enhance the durability and constructibility of the pile foundation, FRP-concrete hybrid composite pile (HCFFT) is suggested. Moreover, equation for the prediction of load carrying capacity of HCFFT circular members under compression is suggested and discussed based on the results of analytical and experimental investigations. In addition, we also conducted the finite element simulation for the structural behavior of new HCFFT composite pile and the result is compared with those of experimental and analytical studies. In addition, the axial loading capacity of new HCFFT composite pile is compared with those of existing PHC pile and hollow circular steel pipe pile, and it was found that the new HCFFT composite pile has advantages over conventional PHC and steel pipe piles.
