  • Synaptic plasticity, which is a long lasting change in synaptic efficacy, underlies many neural processes like learning and memory. It has long been acknowledged that new protein synthesis is essential for both the expression of synaptic plasticity and memory formation and storage. Most of the research interests in this field have focused on the events regulating transcriptional activation of gene expression from the cell body and nucleus. Considering extremely differentiated structural feature of a neuron in CNS, a neuron should meet a formidable task to overcome spatial and temporal restraints to deliver newly synthesized proteins to specific activated synapses among thousands of others, which are sometimes several millimeters away from the cell body. Recent advances in synaptic neurobiology has found that almost all the machinery required for the new protein translation are localized inside or at least in the vicinity of postsynaptic compartments. These findings led to the hypothesis that dormant mRNAs are translationally activated locally at the activated synapse, which may enable rapid and delicate control of new protein synthesis at activated synapses. In this review, we will describe the mechanism of local translational control at activated synapses focusing on the role of cytoplasmic polyadenylation of dormant mRNAs.

  • In the field of machine vision using a single camera mounted on a mobile robot, although the detection and tracking of moving objects from a moving observer, is complex and computationally demanding task. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for a mobile robot to track and capture a moving object using images of a camera. The system consists of the following modules: data acquisition, feature extraction and visual tracking, and trajectory generation. And a single camera is used as visual sensors to capture image sequences of a moving object. The moving object is assumed to be a point-object and projected onto an image plane to form a geometrical constraint equation that provides position data of the object based on the kinematics of the active camera. Uncertainties in the position estimation caused by the point-object assumption are compensated using the Kalman filter. To generate the shortest time trajectory to capture the moving object, the linear and angular velocities are estimated and utilized. The experimental results of tracking and capturing of the target object with the mobile robot are presented.

  • At the present time the task of designing a highly integrated ZigBee radio frequency (RF) receiver with an excellent coexistence performance is still very demanding and challenging. This paper presents a number of system issues and design considerations for a ZigBee RF receiver, namely IEEE 802.15.4, for coexistence with wireless devices in the 2.4-GHz ISM-band. With regard to IEEE 802.15.4, the paper analyzes receiver performance requirements for; system noise figure (NF), system third-order intercept point (system-IIP3), local oscillator phase noise and selectivity. Based on some assumptions, the paper illustrates the relationship between minimum detectable signal (MDS) and various situations that involve the effects of electromagnetic interference generated by other wireless devices. We infer the necessity of much more stringent specification requirements than the published standard for various wireless communication field environments

  • Automatic analysis and understanding of human activities is a challenging task in computer vision, especially for the surveillance scenarios which typically contains crowds, complex motions and occlusions. To address these issues, a Bag-of-words representation of videos is developed by leveraging information including crowd positions, motion directions and velocities. We infer the crowd activity in a motion field using Category Constrained Correlated Topic Model (CC-CTM) with latent topics. We represent each video by a mixture of learned motion patterns, and predict the associated activity by training a SVM classifier. The experiment dataset we constructed are from Crowd_PETS09 bench dataset and UCF_Crowds dataset, including 2000 documents. Experimental results demonstrate that accuracy reaches 90%, and the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-arts by a large margin.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of developing a basic-level TRIZ curriculum to improve students' creativity and problemsolving abilities. Towards this end, literature review, field application study, and a survey on the demand for such curriculum were conducted, as the research methodologies. Specifically, literature review was performed on the TRIZ-related research trends and education trends, and the researchers, who had experience running a TRIZ education program for a few years, ran a basic-level TRIZ for 40 hours as part of the extra-curriculum of A University. An actual survey was also conducted to determine the demand for the development of a basic-level TRIZ curriculum. Of the total of 40 students who were subjected to the curriculum, 31 responded sincerely 1 to the survey. Based on the survey analysis results on the students' recognition of the TRIZ curriculum and of the TRIZ task performance, and on the contents and educational effects of TRIZ, basic guidelines for the development of a basic-level TRIZ curriculum were formulated. Reflecting the results of the survey on the demand for a basic-level TRIZ curriculum, such a curriculum was proposed based on 16-week-long, 3-credit lectures considering the curricula of other subjects in the university.

  • In the current railway industry in Korea, a lot of researches and studies have been progressed to establish RAMS process and construction of RCM system in accordance with international standards. On the point of view of applying the RCM to the railway system, many problems (i.e., reliability of the existing field data, the lack and incorrectness of failure information, etc) are described. To solve these problems, it is need to study and effort the RCM, practically. In this paper, lots of problems and solutions for methods determining the preventive maintenance interval of application of the RCM will be described. To do this, the method using the theory of RBI (Reliability Based Inspection) which is applied to the existing chemical plants and power plants is described. From this study, it is expected that in this situation that the quantitative data is not enough, the results that an analyst quantifies the qualitative factors and/or items will be a good reference that can effectively approach, on the side of determination about each maintenance task and inspection interval.

  • The theory of embodied cognition assumes that behaviors, senses and cognitions are closely connected, and there is a growing interest in investigating the significance of embodied cognition in the field of mathematics education. This study aims to applicate the embodied turtle metaphor and expressions when students visualize three-dimensional objects. We used MRT(Verdenberg & Kuse, 1978) & SVT for this research and both tests turned out that turtle schemes are useful to the students in a low level group. In addition, students found turtle schemes more useful in SVT which requires constructing three-dimensional objects, than in MRT which requires just rotating the image of three-dimensional objects in their mind. These results suggest that providing students who are less capable of spatial visualizing with the embodied schemes like turtle metaphor and expressions can be an alternative to improve their spatial visualization ability.

  • This paper presents balancing control of inverted pendulum on the ROBOKER arm using visual information. The angle of the inverted pendulum placed on the robot arm is detected by a stereo camera and the detected angle is used as a feedback and tracking error for the controller. Thus, the overall closed loop forms a visual servoing control task. To improve control performance, neural network is introduced to compensate for uncertainties. The learning algorithm of radial basis function(RBF) network is performed by the digital signal controller which is designed to calculate floating format data and embedded on a field programmable gate array(FPGA) chip. Experimental studies are conducted to confirm the performance of the overall system implementation.
