Generally, field emitters can be categorized into two types according to the emitter shape, one is a planar field emitter and the other is a point emitter. The planar field emitter is used for displays, flat lamps and signage boards. On the other hands, the point field emitter is expected to play a significant role in x-ray sources and electron beam sources. Such applications of the point field emitters, especially, need large emission current and high emission stability with a small electron beam size. A few reports announced point emitters made by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, they still have suffered from poor reproducibility and low emission current. Here, we demonstrated high performance CNT point emitters by attaching CNTs onto graphite rod. Graphite rod exhibited good electrical conductivity and chemical stability. In this method, the shape of the point emitter could be easily controlled by changing the length and diameter of the graphite rod. The CNT point emitter showed emission current over 1 mA at an applied electric field of 1.4 V/${\mu}m$. We consider that the stable emission performance is attributed to the stable contact between CNTs and graphite rod.
Field emission display(FED) using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as field emitters is expected to large-area panels with high luminance and low power consumption. In order to perform the uniform luminance with low driving voltage, we introduced a new electrode to apply higher electric potential over the CNT cathode in 2003.[1] In the study, we described the luminance uniformity of the panel and the improvement of emission uniformity by increasing the emission-site density. The luminance uniformity of the several ideal dots which were selected over the display area in the panel was 2.8%. [2] The CNT cathode was irradiated by excimer-laser, which was effective to improve emission uniformity and lower driving voltage. A prototype of CNT-FED character display was performed for middle size message displays. The prototype panel had 48 x 480-dots and the resolution was 1-mm. The panel realized high luminance at low power consumption. It will be important characteristics for legible and ubiquitous displays. [3]

The uniformity of emission mage and field emission properties of carbon nanotube(CNT) cathodes dependence on CNT particle dispersion were investigated for field emission displays. We used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) synthesized by CVD method as the field emitter materials. CNT dispersion in CNT ink was carried out by ultrasonication and shaking methods. According to CNT dispersion conditions, the uniformity of emission image and field emission properties of CNT cathodes were greatly affected. The smaller particles of filler materials and CNT powders provide the better properties of the CNT cathodes.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been spotlighted as one of promising field emission displays(FEDs). For the first time, to authors knowledge, we have developed the 9" color CNT-FEDs with the resolution of 240x576 lines. The 9" CNT-FEDs with diode-type and triode-type structures are presented. The well-dispersed CNT paste was squeezed onto the metal-patterned cathode glass. For the anode plate, the Y2O2S:Eu, ZnS:Ag,Cl low-voltage phosphors were printed for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images were demonstrated at 2 V/um. High brightness of 800, 200, and 150cd/m2 was observed on the green, red, and blue phosphors at V/um, respectively. Field emission characteristics of a triode-type CNT-FED were simulated using a finite element method. the resultant field strength on the cathode was modulated by gate bias and emitted electrons were focused on the anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode and the 50-180 V gate biases. Energy distribution of electrons emitted from CNTs was measured using an energy analyzer. The maximum peak of energy curve corresponded to the Fermi energy level of CNTs. The whole fabrication processed of CNT-FEDs were fully scalable and reproducible. Our CNT-FEDs has demonstrated the high potential of large-area and full-color applications with very low cost fabrication and low power consumption.
The effects of paste materials on field emission properties in a carbon nanotube(CNT) cathode were investigated for high-efficient field emission displays. The major components in CNT paste for screen printing were a metallic Ag-paste, a dielectric glass-frit and CNT ink. The emission current from the cathode by an electron tunneling effect increased with an increase in the dielectric material fraction in the CNT paste, which is related to an increase of field enhancement factor in Fowler-Nordheim equation. The surface treatment used, after soft baking of the screen-printed CNT films, greatly affected the decrease in the turn-on field in CNT cathode and the uniformity of emission sites over the entire CNT film area.
It is confirmed that the cause of anode current in SEDs (surface conduction electron emission displays) is the inertial force of electron emitted from the cathode surface in the calculation of electron trajectory. In the fissure of sub-micron, most of electrons emitted from the area of the cathode edge flow into the coplanar anode, while some electrons are emitted into the display surface by the current ratio of $10^{-3}$. The later electrons are forced to fly into the display surface by the centrifugal force due to the curved electric field between top side surfaces near the fissure.
The first 9-inch carbon nanotube based color field emission displays (FEDs) are integrated using a paste squeeze technique. The panel is composed of 576 x 242 lines with implementation of low voltage phosphors. The uniform and moving images are achieved only at $2V/{\mu}m$, This demonstrates a turning point of nanotube for large area and full color applications.
MCFEDs (MOSFET-Contoolled Field Emission Displays) were fabricated to evaluate the validity of MCFEA for display application. The electrical properties of FEAs (Field Emitter Arrays), HVMOSFETs (High-Voltage MOSFETs), and MCFEAs (MOSFET-Controlled Field Emitter Arrays) were measured. The extraction gate voltage of the FEAs to obtain the anode current of 10 nA/tip was around 71 V. The breakdown voltages of the HVMOSFETs were above 81 V for all the samples. The I-V characteristics of the MCFEAs showed that the emission currents of the FEAs were well controlled depending on the control gate voltages of the HVMOSFETs. To avoid the harmful effects during the packaging process, the performance of the MCFEDs was evaluated in a high vacuum chamber. The emission images of the MCFEDs were controlled through very-through operation. From the comparison with a conventional FED, it was proven that the poor uniformity of FED could be improved through the integration with HVMOSFET.
Carbon nanotube cathodes(CNT cathodes) with a trench structure similar to gated structure of triode-type cathode were fabricated by a screen printing method using multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effects of surface treatments on CNT cathodes were investigated for high efficiency field emission displays(FEDs). A liquid method easily removed the organic residue and protruded the CNTs. Field emission properties were measured by using a diode-type mode. The liquid method produced a turn-on field of $1.4V/{\mu}m$. The emission current density was measured about $3.1mA/cm^{2}$ at the electric field of $3V/{\mu}m$. The liquid method showed a high potential applicable to the surface treatment for triode-type FEDs.
