  • FED(Field emission display)의 FEAs(Field emitter arrays)에 형성되어 있는 micro-tip 은 tip 표면의 오염이나 진공내부의 잔류가스에 대단히 민감하다.

  • We report the fabrication of carbon nanostureture films with excellent electron-emission characteristics on chrome electrodes using a pre-deposited transition metal catalyst layer. The emission current densities of 1 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 1 $mA/cm^2$ were measured at the electric field of 2.5 and 4.8 $V/{\mu}m$, respectively, and the current fluctuation of less than 2.5% was observed at the average current density 211 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ for the measurement duration of 20 minutes. We counted more than ${\sim}10^4$ emission sites per $cm^2$ from the emission images, and also noticed good mechanical stability. Moreover, we were able to fabricate good electron-emitting carbon films on chrome electrodes on Corning glass substrates at the nominal temperature below $650^{\circ}C$.

  • To investigate thermal effects of silicon field emitter, we fabricated and characterized single silicon tips with various tip radii, which generate different joule heating. Through I-V and stability tests, the changes of emission characteristics and tip structures due to different tip heating were observed and discussed. From the results, we confirmed that the changes of emission characteristics due to thermal effects in silicon emitter could occur at relatively small emission currents and concluded that the thermal effects should be also considered under normal operation condition above 1 ${\mu}A$.

  • This paper proposes a radiation model, which considers radiation transport as an important component in hot gas analysis. This radiation model is derived from combining the method of partial characteristics (MPC) with net emission coefficient (NEC), and it covers the drawbacks of existing models. Subsequently, using this proposed model, the arc-flow interaction in an arcing chamber can be efficiently computed. The arc is represented as an energy source term composed of ohmic heating and the radiation transport in the energy conservation equation. Ohmic heating term was computed by the electric field analysis within the conducting plasma region. Radiation transport was calculated by the proposed radiation model. Also, in this paper, radiation models were introduced and applied to the gas circuit breaker (GCB) model. Through simulation results, the efficiency of the proposed model was confirmed.

  • We report a carbothermal reduction process for massive synthesis of monolithic W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ phase from tungsten oxide in the presence of carbon source. Carbon black powder was used as a carbon source and added to WO$_3$ by 40 weight percent. Bundles of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods were formed over the temperature range of 80$0^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$. Pure W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ bundles could be separated from the mixture of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ and residual carbon black powder. Field emission character of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ phase was determined using the extracted W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods. Flat lamp fabricated from the W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods showed the turn-on field of 9.3 V/${\mu}m$.

  • Microchannel plates (MCPs) have been developed by introducing new materials and process technologies. Main body was made of alumina by programmable punching, laminating, and firing. The channel walls of pore arrays of an MCP were deposited with thin films by electroless copper plating and sol-gel process. Our MCP has advantages such as easy fabrication, durability, high temperature endurance, and applicability to the large size comparing with the conventional MCPs. Experiments on the brightness of an MCP incorporated FED revealed that the FED with a MCP is three to four times brighter than a conventional FED. Moreover, the focusing in a FED is improved. Incorporating an MCP into a FED is one of promising methods to enhance the characteristics of the FED. In addition, amplification yield of the MCP is measured for varying the aspect ratio and the input current.

  • This study investigates the effect of $NH_3$ gas upon the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using thermal chemical vapor deposition. It is considered that the CNT synthesis occurs mainly through two steps, clustering of catalyst particles and subsequent growth of CNTs. We thus introduced $NH_3$ during either an annealing or growth step. When $NH_3$ was fed only during annealing, CNTs grew longer and more highly crystalline with diameters unchanged. An addition of $NH_3$ during growth, however, resulted in shorter CNTs with lower crystallinity while increased their diameters. Vertically aligned, highly populated CNT samples showed poor field emission characteristics, leading us to apply post-treatments onto the CNT surface. The CNTs were treated by adhesive tapes or etched back by dc plasma of $N_2$ to reduce the population density and the radius of curvatures of CNTs. We discuss the morphological changes of CNTs and their field emission properties upon surface treatments.

  • We have fabricated a carbon nanotube field emission display (CNT-FED) panel with a 2-inch diagonal size by using a screen printing method and vacuum in-line sealing technology. The sealing temperature of the panel was around 390$^{\circ}C$ and the vacuum level was obtained with 1.4x$10^{-5}$torr at the sealing. When the field emission properties of a fabricated and sealed CNT-FED panel were characterized and compared with those of the unsealed panel which was located in a test chamber of vacuum level similar with the sealed panel. As a result, the sealed panel showed similar I-V characteristics with unsealed one and uniform light emission with very high brightness at a current density of 243 ${\mu}A/cm^2$, obtained at the electric field of 10 V/${\mu}m$.

  • Both negative and positive substrate bias effects on the structural properties and field-emission characteristics are investigated. carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are grown on Ni catalysts employing an inductively-coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) method. Characterization using various techniques, such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Auger spectroscopy (AES), and Raman spectroscopy, shows that the physical dimension as well as the crystal quality of CNTs grown can be changed and controlled by the application of substrate bias during CNT growth. It is for the first time observed that the prevailing growth mechanism of CNTs, which is either due to tip-driven growth or based-on-catalyst growth, may be influenced by substrate biasing. It is also seen that negative biasing would be more effectively role in the vertical-alignment of CNTs compared to positive biasing. However, the CNTs grown under the positively bias condition display much better electron emission capabilities than those grown under negative bias or without bias. The reasons for all the measured data regarding the structural properties of CNTs are discussed to confirm the correlation with the observed field-emissive properties.

  • In the CNT paste for field emission, PbO frit had a fatal influence on CNTs by accelerating a decomposition of CNTs during firing. In the thermogravimetric analysis on the mixtures of CNTs and other ingredients, it was evident that CNTs began to burn out at ${\sim}350^{\circ}C$ by reacting with PbO. This problem was overcome by replacing the PbO frit by the Pb-free frit such that most of CNTs could survive during firing. Consequently, the emission current of the CNT paste prepared using the lead-free frit was improved as much as 250 %, compared to the PbO-containing one. The CNT paste was further optimized by adding a dispersant, whose dispersibility was assessed by measuring the resistance of the paste. With 10% dispersant added, the emission properties of the paste was greatly enhanced as 50 times higher as those of the paste without a dispersant.
