This study attempts to develop a rational approach to flexural concrete beam analysis with crack growth. In order to develope analytical solutions, several simplification and assumption are made and the Hillerborg fictitious crack model is adapted for new rational approach to the flexural concrete beam. To provide desired results, the concrete beams with various conditions(more than 126 beam conditions) are analyzed. Before producing the results, these assumptions are founded to be justified by comparison with a FE analysis. The results for each condition of the beams are presented in terms of crack lengths, the strength and cracking stability of concrete beams. And also size effects in a flexural concrete beam is studied using a new flexural cracking model.

Fictitious Crack Model(FCM) is one of the Nonlinear Analysis Method which is presented strictly strain softening phenomena of concrete in the fracture zone. As no stress singularities occur, it is not necessary to use special crack tip elements for this analysis. A special feature of the used method is that it explains not only the growth of existing cracks, but aslo the formation of new crack, as it is assumed that cracks start forming when the tensile stress reaches ft, i.e., the same criterion is used for formation and propagation of cracks.

The box system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. And the framed structure with shear wall core that can effectively resist horizontal forces is frequently adopted for the structural system for high-rise building structures. In these structures, a shear wall may have one or more openings for functional reasons. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements for accurate analysis of the shear wall with openings. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analysis method that can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study. The analysis method uses super element, substructure, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Three-dimensional analyses of the box system and the framed structure with shear wall core having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

Free vibration of orthotropic functionally graded beams, whose material properties can vary arbitrarily along the thickness direction, is investigated based on the two-dimensional theory of elasticity. A hybrid state-space/differential quadrature method is employed along with an approximate laminate model, which allows us to obtain the semi-analytical solution easily. With the introduction of continuity conditions at each fictitious interface and boundary conditions at the top and bottom surfaces, the frequency equation for an inhomogeneous beam is derived. A completely exact solution of an FGM beam with material constants varying in exponential way through the thickness is also presented, which serves a benchmark to verify the present method. Numerical results are performed and discussed.

The box system that consists only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted in many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. Recently, many of the box system buildings with pilotis has been constructed to meet the architectural design requirements. This structure has abrupt change in the structural properties between the upper and lower parts divided by transfer girders. For an accurate analysis of a structure with pilotis, it is necessary to have the buildings modeled into a finer mesh. But it would cost tremendous amount of computational time and memory. In this study, an efficient method is proposed for an efficient analysis of buildings those have pilotis with drastically reduced time and memory. In the proposed analysis method, transfer gilders are modeled using super elements developed by the matrix condensation technique and fictitious beams are introduced to enforce the compatibility conditions at the boundary of each element. The analyses of example structures demonstrated that the proposed method used for the analysis of a structure with pilotis will provide analysis results with accuracy for the design of box system buildings.

The size-effect study of various fracture parameters obtained from two parameter fracture model, effective crack model, double-K fracture model and double-G fracture model is presented in the paper. Fictitious crack model (FCM) for three-point bend test geometry for cracked concrete beam of laboratory size range 100-400 mm is developed and the different fracture parameters from size effect model, effective crack model, double-K fracture model and double-G fracture model are evaluated using the input data obtained from FCM. In addition, the fracture parameters of two parameter fracture model are obtained using the mathematical coefficients available in literature. From the study it is concluded that the fracture parameters obtained from various nonlinear fracture models including the double-K and double-G fracture models are influenced by the specimen size. These fracture parameters maintain some definite interrelationship depending upon the specimen size and relative size of initial notch length.

The object of the present study is to present an adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method for the analysis of thin-walled box beam. Due to good localization properties of wavelets, wavelet methods emerge as alternative efficient solution methods to finite element methods. Most structural applications of wavelets thus far are limited in fixed-scale, non-adaptive frameworks, but this is not an appropriate use of wavelets. On the other hand, the present work appears the first attempt of an adaptive wavelet-based Galerkin method in structural problems. To handle boundary conditions, a fictitous domain method with penalty terms is employed. The limitation of the fictitious domain method is also addressed.

Having established the initial geometry and cable force of a typical three span suspension bridge under permanent load, the additional maximum response of the cable and the stiffening girder due to live load are determined, by means of an analytic procedure, considering the girder first hinged at its ends and then continuous through the main towers. The problem of interaction between the cable and the stiffening girder is examined taking under due consideration the second order effects, whereby, through the analogy to a fictitious tensioned beam under transverse load, a closed -form solution is achieved by means of a simple quadratic equation. It is found that the behavior of the whole system is governed by five simple dimensionless parameters which enable a quick determination of all the relevant design magnitudes of the bridge. Moreover, by introducing these parameters, a set of diagrams is presented, which enable the estimation of the influence of the geometric and loading data on the response and permit its immediate evaluation for preliminary design purposes.
