Two hundred and forty female day-old broiler chicks were employed in this study to investigate the influence of grains containing different levels of dietary fiber on the growth rate, carcass fat content and abdominal fat pad weight. Corn and sorghum were used as low-fiber grains, and rye and hulled barley as high-fiber grains. During the 6 weeks of feeding period, chicks were fed one of the four diets which were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous. Birds were Tandomly allotted to 20 battery cages. There were five replicates per treatment and 12 chicks per replicate (pen). Data were subjected to the one-way ANOVA test, and when significant at 5% level, then means were compared by the method of Duncan (1955). At 3 weeks of age, rye-fed chicks grew significantly slower than did the other birds. At 6 weeks of age, the growth rates of chicks fed rye and sorghum were significantly lower than those of birds fed barley ana corn. Carcasses from birds fed rye showed significantly lower tat content than those from birds fed corn and sorghum at 3 weeks of age. No significant difference was found between rye and barley in this context. At 6 weeks of age. however, this difference in carcass fat content disappeared. No significant difference in abdominal fat pad weight was found among four grains at both 3 and 6 weeks of ages.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate effects of mixed organic acids (MOA) on nutrient digestibility, volatile fatty acids composition and intestinal microbiota in growing-finishing pigs fed high wheat bran diet. Methods: Six crossbred barrows ($Duroc{\times}Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$), with an average body weight $78.8{\pm}4.21kg$, fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum, were allotted to a double $3{\times}3$ Latin square design with 3 periods and 3 diets. Each period consisted of a 5-d adjustment period followed by a 2-d total collection of feces and then a 2-d collection of ileal digesta. The dietary treatments included a corn-soybean-wheat bran basal diet (CTR), mixed organic acid 1 diet (MOA1; CTR+3,000 mg/kg OA1), mixed organic acid 2 diet (MOA2; CTR+2,000 mg/kg OA2). Results: Pigs fed MOA (MOA1 or MOA2) showed improved (p<0.05) apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy, dry matter and organic matter, and pigs fed MOA2 had increased (p<0.05) ATTD of neutral detergent fiber compared to CTR. Dietary MOA supplementation decreased (p<0.05) pH value, and improved (p<0.01) concentrations of lactic acid and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) in ileum compared to CTR. Pigs fed MOA showed higher (p<0.05) concentration of acetic acid, and lower (p<0.05) content of formic acid in feces compared to CTR. Pigs fed MOA1 had increased (p<0.05) concentration of TVFA and butyric acid in feces. Pigs fed MOA1 showed higher concentration of Lactobacillus and lower concentration of Escherichia in feces compared to CTR. Conclusion: Dietary supplementation of MOA 1 or 2 could improve nutrients digestibility, TVFA concentration and intestinal flora in growing-finishing pigs fed high fiber diet.
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of cholesterol and fiber on liver lipid metabolism in rats. Male Sprague Dawley rats were administrated 1% cholesterol and 0.25% sodium cholate to induce hypercholesterolemia and were fed diet containing three levels(0%, 5% and 10%) of cellulose and pec-tin respectively. The rats were sacrified after 5 weeks of feeding period. Net weight gain and feed ef-ficiency ratio were increased in 10% fiber groups as compared to those of 5% fiber groups. Feed intake did not show significancy by fiber kinds and levels. Liver and kidney weights tended to be decreased in proportion to level of fiber. Heart weight was lowered in 10% fiber groups as compared to that of 5% fi-ber groups. Liver triglyceride concentration was significantly increased in pectin groups. Total-free-cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentrations in liver were significantly decreased by fiber and were decreased in proportion to level of fiver. Phospholipid concentration was significantly decreased by fiber and were decreased in proportion to level of fiber. Phospholipid concentration was significantly decreased in 5% cellulose group. the results indicate that 10% pectin may have beneficial roles in hypercholester-olemia.
To compare the effects of various types of dietary fiber on microbial production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and on colon cell proliferation which is used as an intermediate biomarker for colon carcinogenesis, groups of 10 male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed one of four fiber-supplemented diets (6% cellulose, 6% pectin, 6% polydextrose, and a mixture of 3% cellulose and 3% polydextrose) for three weeks. As a control, a fiber-free diet was fed to a separate group of 10 rats. Cell proliferation was measured by in vivo incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine into DNA in the proximal and distal colon, respectively. Luminal concentrations of SCFA were measured by gas chromatography. Dietary fiber significantly influenced microbial production of SCFA in the colon; pectin supplementation produced the highest concentrations of luminal SCFA in both the proximal and distal colon (p<0.05). The degree of individual SCFA production was characterized by a relatively higher increase in butyrate production by the pectin-supplemented diet, and in propionate production by the polydextrose-supplemented diet, resulting in alterations of the molar ratios of acetate, propionate and butyrate. There were significant differences in colon cell proliferation among the diet groups; the pectin-supplemented diet produced a significantly higher effect on cell proliferation of distal colonic epithelial cells (p<0.05), and the polydextrose-supplemented diet produced an intermediate effect compared to the fiber-free or cellulose-supplemented diet. Increased cell proliferation was correlated to increased luminal concentrations of butyrate in the proximal colon and to increased luminal concentrations of propionate and butyrate in the distal colon (p<0.05). Therefore, these data suggest that dietary fiber may modulate colon cell proliferation by altering luminal SCFA concentrations, particularly butyrate and perhaps propionate. In addition, the present study is the first finding that has demonstrated a relative increase in colon cell proliferation due to supplementation with polydextrose, suggesting that the overuse of this artificially synthesized polysaccharide in food processing technology needs to be carefully evaluated from the public health point of view.

We present the detailed description on the fiber techniques adopted in the BOES: the design concepts and manufacturing of the v grooves, the procedures of the fiber polishing, adhering of the fibers to the v grooves, and the axis alignment of the fiber input and exit. The high efficiency and throughput of the BOES imply that the adopted fiber arts and the other optical components were well designed and properly treated. We learned that the relatively low efficiency of the 80 micron fiber comparing with the 200 and 300 micron fibers comes from the seeing and the guiding effects not from the poor fiber handling.
In the first of two experiments, liveweight gain responses and carcass characteristics were investigated using two breeds of growing male goats, local (Dhofari) and exotic (Cashmere), fed on a whole pelleted-high fiber date by-products' based diet at 32.5% level (As-fed) supplemented with 12% fish (sardine), (HF-Fish) and a commercial concentrate diet (conc.). The (HF-Fish) diet was formulated to be iso-nitrogenous to the (conc.) diet, supplying 14% CP (DM-basis). Both diets together with Rhodes grass hay (Chloris Guyana) were fed ad libitum. The experimental design was a complete random arranged in a $2{\times}2$ factorial with breeds and diets as the main factors, using six animals per treatment. The experiment lasted for 84 days and goats were penned individually. At the end of the feeding trial, three animals from each treatment group were slaughtered for carcass evaluation. In experiment 2, diets' digestibility and N-balance were determined using 3 sheep per diet. The (HF-Fish) diet significantly(p < 0.05) improved liveweight gain. There was also a significant difference(p < 0.01) between breeds, with Cashmere gaining more than local goats. Feed conversion efficiency, dressing percent and longissimus dorsi area were not significantly affected by diet or breed(p > 0.05). Digestibility of the proximate components and N-balance for both diets were similar and not significantly different(p > 0.05). Fish supplementation greatly improved the digestibility of CF, ADF, NDF, cellulose and hemicellulose. Meat production ost was decreased by 31% due to feeding of the (HF-Fish) diet.
The Purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of soluble dietary fiber psyllium on insulin sensitivity and skeletal muscle glucose transporter 4(GLUT4) protein expression in stroke-prone hypertensive rats(SHRSP) fed a high-fat diet containing 5% of psyllium or cellulose from five to nine weeks of age. Obtained results were as follows : (1) In the psyllium diet group fasting plasma glucose level was significantly reduced and glucose levels upon oral glucose tolerance test were significantly lower than cellulose diet group at 30 min(p<0.05) and 60 min(p<0.01) (2) Skeletal muscle GLUT4 contents were significantly increased in the soleus(slow twitch) and extensor digitorum longus(fast twitch) muscle of psyllium diet group. (3) However there was no difference in insulin levels in the fasting and oral glucose tolerance test. These results indicated that psyllium diet improves peripheral insulin sensitivity but not insulin secretion. In conclusion our present finding suggest that soluble fiber diet is effective to increase insulin sensitivity in SHRSP. From these results it was suggested that soluble dietary fiber supplementation effectively prevents insulin resistance.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the kinds and the amounts of dietary fiber on serum lipid composition in rats. Seventy-two male Sprague-Dawley rats weighting 160$\pm$10g were fed diets containing 1.0%, 3.6%, 6.0% and 10.0% $\alpha$-cellulose, pectin and alginic acid fer 4 weeks. Daily food intake of experimental groups was significantly higher in the u-cellulose 10.0% group than in the other groups. Increasing the dietary fiber level decreased the food efficiency ratio of the $\alpha$-cellulose, pectin and alginic acid groups. Serum triglyceride concentration was significantly lower in the rats fed the alginic acid diet. Serum total cholesterol concentration showed no significant difference in the kind and the amount of three dietary fibers. Serum HDL-cholesterol concentration was higher in $\alpha$-cellulose and pectin diet. HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio was higher in u-cellulose and pectin diet than alginic acid diet. In conclusion, alginic acid is good for the serum triglyceride decrease, pectin is good for HDL-cholesterol increase, $\alpha$-cellulose and alginic acid are good for HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio increase. But the different effects according to the dietary fiber's contents did not show a significant trend.
To investigate the effects of molasses addition at ensiling on nutritional quality of wilted napier grass, chemical quality and nutrient composition of the silages, digestibility and nitrogen retention at feeding trials were analysed using 4 goats in a cross over design. The results are as follows : 1. Molasses addition at ensiling decreased pH value (3.99) and ammonia nitrogen, and increased lactic acid content by 285% compared to non-additive silage (83.5 g/kg dry matter). 2. There were no differences in digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, hemicellulose and cellulose between the silage ensiled with molasses (MS silage) and the silage ensiled without molasses (WS silage). Urinary nitrogen excretion, however, significantly (p<0.05) decreased in goats fed the MS silage, and nitrogen retention was positive in goats fed the MS silages, but negative in goats fed the WS silage. 3. Acetic acid concentration in remained fluids in goats fed the MS silage was lower and propionic and butyric acid concentrations were higher than those in goats fed the WS silage. As water soluble carbohydrate content was higher in the MS silage than in the WS silage, a part of added molasses was still remained in the silage at the feeding trials and could be utilized for energy sources by the goats. Nitrogen may be also effectively utilized in goats fed the MS silage, because the silage were inhibited in proteolysis during ensiling.
