A Study on Knowledge and Attitude of the Middle and High School students Relating to Environmental Health (중, 고등학교 학생들의 환경보건에 대한 지식 태도 조사 연구)

  • This study was conducted to contribute to development of both educational materials and programs necessary to effectively teach the environmental health to the students of the middle and high schools, by analysing their understanding and attitude toward the environmental health. Also this study was carried out with 3120 male and female students of the middle and high schools in the urban and rural areas for three months from April 1 to June 30, 1996. Based on the result of this study, It is required for the related authorities, schools, experts and patents to make all their efforts, in other for the students to correctly understand the environment while this study contributes to the development of educational programs useful for effectively studying the environment and of educational materials concerning environment of the middle and high schools.

Effects of a School-based Intervention Program for Middle School Adolescent Girls with Depression: As Part of the School Health Services

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a school-based intervention program for middle school adolescent girls with depression. Methods: The study was a pretest-posttest repeated-measure design with a nonequivalent control group. Fifty eight students with depressive symptoms were recruited from two middle schools in Seoul, Korea. The data were collected from the intervention (n=30) and the comparison group (n=28). The research instrument was Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale. Results: The intervention group greatly improved from baseline to 10 weeks and then saw a slight positive change between 10 and 13 weeks. Conclusion: The results of this research show that depression intervention programs are effective for young female adolescents. Thus the investigation has important school-based treatment implications, and should be integrated into school curriculums by school health nurses for early intervention of depressive symptoms in middle school adolescent girls.

The Perception of Academic Difficulties of Middle School Students in technology subject and their Influences Variables. (중학생의 기술교과 학업수행 어려움 인식과 영향 변인)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the perception of academic difficulties of middle school students and their influences variables in technology subject. The subjects of this study were middle school students in the whole country. A total of 420 students were selected considering the grade and area for the survey. The data were collected by mail and analyzed using SPSS 22.0K. The results of this study were as follows : First, The academic difficulties perceived by middle school students in the technology subject were recognized as normal. Second, Middle school students perceived it as a lack of experience (opportunity) in the technology domain as a cause of academic difficulties. Third, In the learning process, the female students were more difficult to understand the related terms and theories than the male students. In the problem solving activities, the female students were more difficult than the male students in identifying problems, designing solutions, selecting solutions, modeling, testing solutions, and correcting improvements. Fourth, the academic difficulty in learning technology lesson was difficult in terms of terminology, theory, and practice activities in the order of Second, Third, and 1st grade. Fifth, lack of understanding knowledge, confusion of contents knowledge, lack of technical interest, shortage of class hours, lack of understanding of evaluation criteria were all influenced by the difficulty of technical subject learning. Sixth, the academic difficulty influencing the problem solving process was explained by understanding comprehension, content knowledge confusion, technical interest, class time, understanding of evaluation criteria.

Dental Fear and the associated Factors of some Middle School Students in Cheongju-City (청주시 일부 중학생들의 치과공포도와 치과공포 요인)

  • This study aims to examine the level of fear and the influential factors affecting their dental fear and to utilize the result as the basic materials in the dental management. The subjects were the students from a middle school located in Cheongju-City. The school was selected by convenient sampling and self-answered questionnaire was filled in by the students for a week from December 19th 2011. The survey result showed that 77 male students and 169 female students(total 246 students) answered 'yes' to the question 'Have you ever felt fear when you visited a dentist?' among 475 students who had visited a dentist in the past. The distribution of responses in each category of fear was examined by frequency analysis. The study results showed significant difference in the item of 'causing irritation during the dental treatments' between male students and female students (p<0.05). Converting the level of fear into scores after marking the answers, the score of male students was 52.0 points and the score of female students was 58.53 showing the score of female students was significantly higher in statistics. Moreover, the fear score of female students for the category 'causing irritation during the dental treatments' was also significantly higher in statistics(p<0.05). Therefore, these results should be reflected to the dental care environments in order for the adolescent to reduce the dental anxiety and fear.

Attitudes Toward Suicide in Middle-School Students (중학교 학생들의 자살에 대한 인식도 조사)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine attitudes of middle-school students toward happiness, suicide, and factors associated with suicide. Methods : A self-administered questionnaire was used in a cluster sample of 1,319 middle-school students (male 793, female 526). Data were obtained on a wide range of constructs regarding their attitude towards happiness, suicidal ideation and attempts, and factors associated with suicide. Results : Middle-school students choose 'love within family' as most important factor for their happiness. Subjective mental health status was mostly associated with happiness. Subjects in lower socioeconomic status tended to respond their mental health status was not good and have more suicidal idea. 48.7% of subjects had permissive attitudes toward suicide, especially, girls. However, 65.0% responded that suicide was preventable problem. Compared to older people, middle-school students perceived that environmental factors were more important than innate and personal factors for suicide. Conclusion : Results of the study indicate that middle-school students have permissive attitudes toward suicide, but positive attitudes for the prevention of suicide. This suggest that education in these age group could be effective for the prevention of suicide. Also, approaches to suicide prevention programs should be developed based on the family intervention. Especially, we should care about girls and adolescents in lower socioeconomic status.

The Prevalence of Counsel Need among the Middle School Students, and Characteristics of Their Family and School Life (학교생활문제로 전문가 상담을 필요로 하는 중학생의 규모와 가정 및 학교생활 특성)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of counselling need for school life problem in middle school students and to investigate characteristics of their family and school life. Methods: Subjects were 7,136 middle school students in Seoul. Data were from 2010 Student Health Examination in Seoul. Cross-sectional study using secondary data was performed. Descriptive, t-test and multiple logistic regression were conducted. Results: 7.2% among subjects required counselling for their school life problem. By demographics, the odds ratios of counselling need were 2.2 times in female, and 1.59 and 1.41 times in 8th and 9th grade vs 7th grade. By region, those of Dongbukbu (Northeast), Seobu (West), and Jungbu (Central) vs Kangnam (South of River) district were 0.46, 0.25, and 0.57 times. With regard to family and school life characteristics, those of inflicted violence, the bullying, family apprehension, and consideration of away from home were 3.38, 3.75, 2.08, and 2.40 times, while that of students having person to discuss was only 0.62 times. Conclusion: It is necessary to activate the school counselling program, especially enforcing support system, not only to enforce resilience of student, but also to decrease the health problems in family and school life.

A Study on the Relationship between Fast Food Consumption Patterns and Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Attitude of Middle and High School Students in Busan (부산 지역 중.고등학생의 패스트푸드 이용 실태와 영양지식, 식생활 태도와의 관련성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate fast food consumption patterns, nutrition knowledge, dietary attitude of middle and high school students in Busan. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 562 students from April 8 to April 22 in 2006. The results are summarized as follows. Convenience to eat is the best motive for visiting fast food restaurants. Nutrition knowledge scores of middle school male students were lower than those of the other groups. The more nutrition knowledge female students have, the lower fast food consumption became. There was no significant difference in nutrition knowledge and fast food consumption in male students. There was a significantly positive correlation between education levels of their parents and dietary attitude of the subjects(p<0.01). Pocket money showed a significantly negative correlation with dietary attitude and with fast food use frequency(p<0.05). There was a significantly positive correlation between nutrition knowledge and dietary attitude of the subjects. The use frequency of fast food showed a negative correlation with dietary attitude(p<0.01) and nutrition knowledge(p<0.05) of the subjects. Therefore, proper nutrition education is required to improve their nutritional status and dietary attitude.

Comparative Study on Dietary Behavior, Nutrition Knowledge and Cognition of Body Image, Weight Control and Nutrition Education of Middle School Students according to Gender (남녀 중학생의 식행동, 영양지식 및 체형, 체중조절과 영양교육에 관한 인식비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how important providing nutrition education to young students is. The study is based on the assumption that students' food behavior, nutrition knowledge and cognition of body image, weight control and nutrition education are considerably influenced by gender. A total of 495 students (249 boy and 246 girl students) were surveyed in one middle school located Siheungsi, Gyeonggido. The average height and weight of the boy and girl students are 164.6 cm, 54.4 kg and l58.5cm, 47kg, respectively. According to average BMI, the boy students($20.0kg/m^2$) are in the normal state. However, the girl students($18.2kg/m^2$) are underweight. For the status of meal intake, 52.4% of the students took breakfast everyday. Female students had dinner with lower intake frequency than males(p<0.05). For snack intake, the kinds of snack differ according to gender(p<0.05); more milk for male and more fruit for female students. The scores of dietary behavior based on Mini Dietary Assessment were 21.5/30 for male and 21.3/30 for female students. The nutrition knowledge scores of 4.6/10 for male and 4.6/10 for female students were not significantly different according to gender. The score of dietary behavior is based on Mini Dietary Assessment. The survey shows that in terms of the experience of weight control, 35.5% of the girl students have made an effort to watch their weight and 21.8% of the boy students have tried controlling their weight(p<0.0001). It turns out that the students who have been provided nutrition education are more satisfied with their body shape than those who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.05).

A Comparative Study on the Relationships of Depression, Fatigue, BMI, and Health Locus of Control between Urban and Rural Female Middle School Students (도시 농촌 간 여중생의 우울, 피로, 체질량지수, 건강통제위 비교)

  • Purpose: The principal objective of this study was to assess the relationships of depression, fatigue, BMI, and health locus of control between urban and rural female middle school students. Methods: The study subjects included 377 girls in randomly-sampled middle schools in urban and rural provinces. The data were collected via self-recorded questionnaires from April 21.- to May 2. 2008, and analyzed using the SPSS Win 12.0 program. Results; 1) The mean score of depression was $10.22{\pm}5.72$ (urban), $10.81{\pm}4.92$ (rural). 2) The mean fatigue score was $50.43{\pm}1.57$ (urban), $51.90{\pm}9.70$ (rural). 3) BMI was classified into 3 groups: leptosomic, normal weight, and obesity groups. The mean BMI score was $18.73{\pm}2.05$ (Seoul), and $20.31{\pm}3.26$ (provincial). 4) The internal locus of control was higher than the external locus of control (urban). 5) Fatigue was correlated with depression (r=.512, p=.000) in both areas. The health locus of control was correlated with Fatigue (r=.153, p=.042) in province. Conclusion: An effective program to reduce the levels of fatigue and depression for middle school girls and to maintain normal weight is required. In particular, the high-risk depression group can be managed through community mental health care center deep interviews, and close observation.

A Study on the Consuming Condition of Cosmetics of Female Students in Middle and High Schools (서울시내(市內) 여중고생(女中高生)의 화장품(化粧品) 소비실태(消費實態) 조사연구(調査硏究))

  • The purpose of this study is to offer basic data to adolescents' cosmetic culture by investigating and analysing the choices made by female students who have been becoming principle consumers of cosmetics these days. Firstly, social and cultural backgrounds and concepts of N generation, and then characteristics and influencing powers of female students were reviewed. And this study also included questionnaire surveys of 500 female students in middle and high schools located in Seoul. Data were processed using a SPSS$^+$ program and analyzed by using frequency, percentage and the $X^2$-test. The major findings run as follows: Female students have the effects of spreading their words quickly and abilities of making a decision what to buy. And they accept consuming behaviors itself as a part of cultural lives. Therefore, industries have acknowledged them as new principal consumers with a powerful influence in the market. They also play an important role in active consumer as emotional generation who has distinct personalities and prefer fashion trends, changes and innovations. They show conformities with their peer groups and they also want to identify themselves with characters or stars. The cosmetic behaviors of female students relating to demographic characteristics showed a significant relation to grades, majors, school groups and places of residence. Female students have a lot of interest and knowledge about cosmetics. And they use various cosmetic products. This study demonstrated the age for using make-up for the first time has been becoming younger more and more. Recently, female adolescents tend to use face powder, lip gloss, mascara and eye shadow. It is assumed that cosmetic purchases of female students can be considered as an impulsive aspects. However, before purchases, the proportion of students having any particular cosmetic brand in mind previously has been increasing. They take into consideration skin safety, the quality of product and color, when purchasing cosmetic products.
