Directional felling is a felling method practised by the Forestry Department in Peninsular Malaysia as prescribed in Field Work Manual (1997) for Selective Management Systems (SMS) in forest harvesting. Determining the direction of tree felling in Peninsular Malaysia is conducted during the pre-felling inventory 1 to 2 years before the felling operation. This study aimed to predict and analyze the direction of tree felling using the vector-based path distance back link method in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and compare it with the felling direction observed on the ground. The study area is at Balah Forest Reserve, Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. A Path Distance Back Link (spatial analyst) function in ArcGIS Pro 3.0 was used in predicting tree felling direction. Meanwhile, a binary classification was used to compare the felling direction estimated using GIS and the tree felling direction observed on the ground. Results revealed that 61.3% of 31 trees predicted using the vector-based projection method were similar to the felling direction observed on the ground. It is important to note that dynamic changes of natural constraints might occur in the middle of tree felling operation, such as weather problems, wind speed, and unpredicted tree falling direction.
The purpose of this study was to broaden our knowledge on the productivity and costs of felling operation in three different harvesting methods(whole tree, tree-length and cut-to-length). Felling was conducted in three different harvesting methods with two workers who have different work experiences. Worker A and B have had felling experiences for about 5 years and 15 years, respectively. Felling productivity in whole tree method was $10.3m^3/SMH$ for worker A and $12.7m^3/SMH$ for worker B. Felling costs for worker A and B were $2,066won/m^3$ and $2,201won/m^3$, respectively. Although felling productivity of worker B in whole tree method was higher than worker A, felling costs of worker A were similar to worker B because the wage of worker B was more expensive than the wage of worker A (p>0.05). In tree-length method, felling cost of worker B were cheaper than that of worker A. Felling productivity and cost in tree-length method were $2.2m^3/SMH$ and $9,890won/m^3$ for worker A and $3.3m^3/SMH$ and $8,459won/m^3$ for worker B, respectively (p<0.05). In cut-to-length method, felling productivity and cost were $2.3m^3/SMH$ and $9,584won/m^3$ for worker A and $3.0m^3/SMH$ and $9,395won/m^3$ for worker B, respectively. Felling productivity of worker B was higher than that of worker A(p>0.05). Our preliminary results found that harvesting methods and worker's experiences highly affect on the productivity and costs of felling operations. These results should be useful for forest managers when planning cost-effective harvesting operations.
A tree-length harvesting system using the HAM300, which is mounted on a farm tractor prototype machine, have been recently introduced in South Korea for thinning old (>30 years) forests. However, no research has previously been conducted on the characteristics of residual stand damage associated with cable yarding systems on thinning treatment stands in South Korea. Therefore, there were assessed on the degree and quantity of residual stand damage caused by felling and yarding process to broaden the knowledge of residual stand damage on semi-mechanized skyline thinning operations. This study investigated scar size, direction, area, shape type and their distribution on the residual stand damage caused by felling and yarding operations. Damage to residual trees was generated for 7.4% and 6.9% of residual trees in felling and yarding operations, respectively. Damaged direction of scars was located in front-side (38.9%) and up-side (34.7%) for felling operations while the highest scar damage was found on down-side (44.6%) for yarding operations. Scar heights of felling damage were higher than those of yarding damage. In yarding operation, the most of the scars was located within l0m from the center of the skyline corridor. These results should be useful information for forest managers and landowners to reduce residual stand damages and retain valuable timber volume from thinning treatments.
There are 3 kinds of forest managements: One of them is forest utilization management which collects abundant forest resources by felling the trees: the second of them is scientific forest management which cultivates forest resources; and the last one is emergency aid forest management, needed by the forest resources davastation, for the surposes of soil conservation and preventing the indirect damages. During the 36 years of Japanese occupation, they pillaged 600 to 800 million cubic meters of the forest resources, in the condition of the colonial system. After the emancipation from the Japanese occupation, the national soil conservation work has been practiced for 18 years without correcting the Japanese forest management (which means felling system); therefore the essential in the forest, conservation works is to get rid of imitating the Japanese pillage management so as to turn the direction of the forestry policy to the emergency aid management which means forest investment.
Tree-ring chronologies can be used to date historical buildings by matching them with the chronologies of living trees or previously dated samples. Tree-ring dating gives a calendar year to each tree ring and produces the felling dates of logs or woods which had been used for buildings. In Korea, several chronologies of Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc., 'sonamu' in Korean), a major species for the wooden building materials, have been developed and used for dating historical buildings. In this study, Tongmyungjeon Hall of Changkyung Palace in Seoul was dated by tree rings. The present Tongmyungjeon Hall was known to be reconstructed in A.D. 1834 after burned-out in A.D. 1790. We sampled total of 122 wood samples which were replaced during the repair process in 2002-2003. Felling dates of the samples were determined by the dendrochronological crossdating method. Crossdating method employs graphic comparison of the master patterns (ring-width chronologies of known dates) with those of the sample chronologies of unknown dates. Tree-ring dates confirmed that the reconstruction of 1834 utilized second-handed timbers as well as fresh-cut ones. The felling dates of wooden floor frames were mostly A.D. 1913, indicating the 'Ondol' floors were changed to the wooden floors around 1914 when the Japanese rulers brutally destroyed the royal Korean Palaces and transformed palace buildings to their offices or exhibition halls after occupying Korea in 1910. This study proved that tree-ring dating was a useful and accurate method to identify the critical dates for the history of Korean traditional buildings.
This study's objective was to conduct species identification and tree-ring dating of wooden elements used in Mungyeong Juheulgwan of Joryeong (Gate No. 1). Of the 84 wooden elements evaluated, 76 were confirmed to be hard pines, 5 were soft pines, and 3 belonged to Abies spp. For tree-ring dating, cores of the wooden elements were collected using a drill, and ring-width plots of individual samples were constructed using the TSAP software. The results of performing tree-ring dating for the outermost ring of 59 hard pine wooden elements revealed the following 4 felling dates: summer of 1708-late fall of 1709, summer of 1792-early spring of 1794, late fall of 1838-early spring of 1840 and 1867, and early spring-fall of 1872. These felling dates were found to be consistent with those in the construction and repair records of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, Juhulgwan Jungsugi, and those engraved on Juhulgwan Walls. It is believed that some of the wooden materials harvested at that time were stored and used since there was a difference of approximately10 years between the repair records and felling dates.
This paper presents tile efficient polling architecture for simple network management protocol (SNMP). Now a day, tile internet traffics have been increasing rapidly within a few years as the subscriber's network to connect internet is provided commonly. With this trend, the network management traffics also make the same phases. To provide numerous higher Quality services to the customers, the management traffic must be controlled within the permitted limit. This paper proposes the policy-based felling architecture for SNMP MIB with several parameters and suggests the data collecting layer architecture for the efficient polling.
The Phyllostachys pubescens planted in the Nambu forest Experiment was used for this study. The growth ages of the P. pubescens were 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. The experiment was carried out every month in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. The p. pubescens were divided into upper, middle and lower parts according to the growing points. The static modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) and dynamic modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) were investigated for the physical and mechanical properties of the P. pubescens. The density, MOEs and $MOE_d$according to the growing points were highest in the upper part of the P. pubescens. Generally, density and MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P pubescens for 3 years grows larger every month. However, moisture content, MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P. pubescens for 1, 2 years had nothing to do with growth ages and felling time. In the case of the relationships between average MOEs and $MOE_d$ the correlation coefficient was 0.88 in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. Also, $MOE_d$ showed about 18.5% higher than MOEs. Generally, the equally expressed in research that was known that $MOE_d$ of wood is higher than MOEs of wood. Therefore, the $MOE_d$ using a resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method for predicting the MOE of the P. pubescens.
This study is concerned with the disasters that occure in the field of industrial explosives and analyzed by two side the disaster of the manufacturing factory and that of the field, and is studied about the safety and the countermeasure. The industrial explosives accidents occure just accidentaly and unforeseeable, and reappearance experiments are more difficult. The 3E of J.H. Harvey was applied in this study to establish the counter measure of preventation of accidents, overcoming these restricted factores. As a method of technical safety countermeasures. The blasting vibration formula which had been conformed from the Seoul Subway Construction work during 1980-1984 year, was uilized, and, using the formula $V=Kw^{0.5}D^{-1.5}$ for the gneiss which is widely distributed in Pusan area, an index of the minimum and maximum amount of gun powder, to be used according to safety distance was made, and it helped the gun powder managing technician's practical business. During the fore work discharging, the safety distances of felling were theoretically established based on the writer ${\diagdown}s$ experiences of more than 10 years on this field.
This study aims to date wooden coffins excavated from graves in Shinnae-dong, Seoul, South Korea, using dendrochronology. The species of woods used to make the coffins were identified as Pinus densiflora S. et Z., one of the major conifers in Korea. Of 12 graves, 10 were successfully dated using various red-pine chronologies of South Korea. Due to the absence of the last-formed tree ring before felling, the number of sapwood rings, used to obtain likely cutting dates, had to be estimated. The terminus post quem for two coffins without plaster frames were AD 1548 and AD 1571, respectively. Eight coffins with plaster frames yielded estimated dates from AD 1664 to AD 1799. The tree-ring dates indicated that the coffins with plaster frames in Shinnae-dong were constructed approximately 100 years later than those without plaster frames.
