Powder injection molding (PIM) uses the shaping advantage of injection molding but is applicable to metals and ceramics. This process combines a small quantity of polymer with an inorganic powder to form a feedstock that can be molded. After shaping, the polymeric binder is extracted and the powder is sintered, often to near-theoretical densities. According1y, PIM delivers structural materials in a shaping technology previously restricted to polymers. The process overcomes the shape limitations of traditional powder compaction, the costs of machining, the productivity limits of isostatic pressing and slip casting, and the defect and tolerance limitations of conventional casting. Since 1980s when major attention was given to PIM process, it has been widening the application area from small parts with complex shape and tailored properties to structural parts requiring strength and ductility as in automotive, military and medical industries.

Pitch synthesis reaction was studied based on the effect for chemical composition of feedstock. Feedstock was selected as pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar (CT), which are by-products in petroleum and steel industry. Pitch was prepared at $420^{\circ}C$ for 180 minutes on atmospheric pressure by thermal treatment. Thermal stability and softening point (SP) of the prepared pitches were investigated and their molecular weight distribution was analyzed by MALDI-TOF. PFO has various aliphatic compounds and coal-tar has high aromaticity with 3 wt% of primary quinoline insolubles. The thermal property of PFO was enhanced with polymerization reaction during the thermal treatment with increased molecular weight range. But CT was inferior to PFO because of side reaction by hetero elements. CTP was appeared molecular weight by 0~200 m/z.

In this study, multi-ply SiC fiber reinforced Ti-6Al-4V composites have been manufactured by plasma spraying and subsequent vacuum hot pressing. Two different sizes of Ti-6Al-4V feedstock powders were used for plasma spraying to form matrix. A considerable amount of oxygen was incorporated into as-sprayed Ti matrix during plasma spraying, and consequently caused matrix embrittlement. The use of coarse-sized feedstock powder reduced oxygen contamination, but tended to increase fiber spacing irregularity and fiber strength degradation. Longitudinal tensile strength and ductility of the composites were mainly affected by the matrix oxygen content.
Chemical composition and enzymatic saccharification characteristics of hemp woody core were investigated by their chemical composition analysis and enzymatic saccharification with commercially available cellulases (Celluclast 1.5L and Novozym 342). Hemp woody core have higher xylan and lower lignin contents than its bast fiber. Based on hemicelluloses and lignin composition, hemp woody core is similar with hardwood biomass. However, cellulose was more easily converted to glucose than xylan to xylose and this trend was confirmed both hemp woody core and yellow poplar. Hemp woody core biomass shows higher saccharification than yellow poplar (hardwood biomass) based on cellulose and xylan hydrolysis. With easier enzymatic saccharification in cellulose and xylan, and similar chemical composition, hemp woody core have better biorefinery feedstock characteristics than hardwood biomass.
Application of biochar to soils is proposed as a significant, long-term, sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide in terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to reducing emissions and increasing the sequestration of carbon, production of biochar and its application to soils will contribute improve soil quality and crop productivity. Objectives were i) to evaluate biochar productivity from crop residues using a low-cost field scale mobile pyrolyzer and ii) to evaluate characteristics of feedstocks and biochars from locally collected crop residues. Pyrolysis experiments were performed in a reactor operated at $400-500^{\circ}C$ for 3-4 hours using biomass samples of post-harvest residues of corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium spp.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Feedstocks differed, but average conversion to biochar was 23%. Carbon content of biomass feedstock and biochar samples were 445 g $kg^{-1}$ and 597 g $kg^{-1}$, respectively. Total carbon content of biochar samples was 34% higher than its feedstock samples. Significant increases were found in P, K, Ca, Mg, and micro-nutrients contents between feedstock and biochar samples. Biochar from corn stems and rice hulls can sequester by 60% and 49% of the initial carbon input into biochar respectively when biochar is incorporated into the soils. Pyrolysis conversion of corn and rice residues sequestered significant amounts of carbon as biochar which has further environmental and production benefits when applied to soils. Field experiment with crop residue biochar will be investigated the stability of biochars to show long-term carbon sequestration and environmental influences to the cropping systems.
Fatty acid methyl esters, also referred to as biodiesel, have been determined to have a great deal of potential as substitutes for petro-diesel. In order to enhance productivity in the biodiesel production process, feedstocks were previously recommended to be anhydrous, with a free fatty acid content of less than 0.5%. In this study, the effects of several catalysts, methanol molar ratio, catalyst amount, and reaction time on the reduction of free fatty acid level were studied with a simulated feedstock consisting of 20% oleic acid in rapeseed oil. Ferric sulfate was selected as the best catalyst. Increasing the catalyst amount and methanol molar ratio is very effective in decreasing the acid value of the simulated mixture. Our results may provide useful information with regard to the development of more economic and efficient free fatty acid removal system.
In this study, blended feedstock derived pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar was prepared to produce a pitch by thermal polymerization reaction for manufacturing artificial graphite materials. The aromaticity value of 0.355 and 0.818 was obtained for PFO and coal-tar, respectively. In addition, PFO and coal-tar exhibited the difference tendency of weight loss curve for thermogravimetric analysis, which is related to the structural stability depending on the aromaticity and functional groups. The production characteristics confirmed that the pitch derived PFO showed lower production yield and higher softening point than that using blended feedstock. In particular, when comparing P360 (138.5 ℃) and B420 (141.4 ℃) having similar softening points, the production yields of both pitches exhibited 29.89 and 49.03 wt%, respectively. This is mainly due to the blending of PFO and coal-tar having high pitch polymerization reactivity including a large amount of alkyl groups and coal-tar having high thermal stability. This phenomenon indicated that the increased production yield is because of a synergic effect of both the high reactivity of PFO and thermal stability of coal-tar.

Since 1990s, efforts to recycle the waste plastics by chemical methods have increased. And in accordance with this trend, attempts have become active to use the waste PET as raw materials of chemical industries. In this article, the patents and papers for development of commercial technology for feedstock recycling and high end products from PET wastes were collected and analyzed. The open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1974 to 2013 were investigated. The patents and papers were collected using key-words and filtered by the definition of the technology. The patents and papers were analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies and the technical trends were discussed in this paper.
The objective of this work is to produce solid biofuel from sawdust using the HTC (Hydrothermal carbonization) process. The HTC process of feedstock involves the raw material coming into contact with high temperature and pressurized water. The HTC process could produce gaseous, liquefied and solid products, but this study focused on solid product only as an alternative to coal. In this study, sawdust used for a feedstock and its moisture content was under 5%. Water was added with the feedstock to raise moisture content to 80% and also used catalysts. The HTC process was performed at temperature range from 200 to $270^{\circ}C$ and reaction time was 15 to 120 min. Rising temperature resulted in increasing the higher heating value (HHV) of HTC product. In case of adding catalyst, HHV of solid biofuel was higher and reaction occurred at lower temperature and pressure. Also, HTC solid product had been characterized and found to be hydrophobic, increased HHV (over 40%), and pelletized easily compared to raw material.
Homegeneous feedstock is necessary to make plastic magents with uniform magnetic properties, therefore the optrimized mixing route and the homogeneity evaluation method are demanded. In this paper, method of homogeneity evaluation and effect of homogeneity on the magnetic prperites were investigated using Sr-ferrite /EVA plastic magnets. The feedstocks with different homogeneity were prepared using batch mixer and single screw extruder. The homogeneities of feedstocks were tested by torgue sensor, capilary rheometer, and measurement of magnetic properties. Mixing torque measurement using torque sensor was an effective method to determine the critical powder loading, but it was nor suitable to suitable to determine the feedstock mixing quality. Particle alignment measurement of a plastic magent was very accurate to evaluate the homogeneity, but expensive equipments were required to make and measure the samples. Pressure measurement using capillary rheometer was a very effective and easy method with high accuracy. Homogeneous feedstock increased the particle alignment of plastic magnet. Remanet flux density and maximum energy product increased linearly and quadratically with increasing particle alignment, respectively.
