The appearance of faults during tunnel construction is often difficult to predict in terms of strike, dip, scale, and strength, even though this information is essential in determining the strength of the surrounding rock mass. However, the strength and rock mass classification of fault zones are generally determined empirically on the construction site. In this study, 109 specimens were collected from fault of nine area throughout Korea, and direct shear tests were conducted and the particle distribution was analyzed to better characterize the fault zones. Six multiple regression models were established, using 97 of the specimens, to analyze the correlation between the shear strengths and weight rations of these fault materials. A verification of the six models, using the remaining 12 specimens, shows that in all of the models the coefficient of determination yielded $R^2{\geq}0.60$, with two models yielding $R^2{\geq}0.69$. These results provide useful information for determining the shear strength of fault materials in future studies.
Recently, along with the improvement of high-speed rail and road design speed, the proportion of tunnel construction work is increasing proportionally. In particular, the construction of long tunnels is rapidly increasing due to the mountainous terrain of our country. In this way, due to the trend of tunnels becoming longer, it is difficult to design and construct tunnels by avoiding fault zones. In the case of tunnel construction in mountainous areas, ground investigation is often difficult even during design due to the topographical conditions, making precise ground investigation difficult, and as a result, the upper part of the tunnel is damaged during tunnel construction. When fault zones, which are vulnerable to weathering, exist, the stability of the tunnel during excavation is directly affected by the fault zone distribution, strength characteristics, and groundwater distribution range. In particular, when a fault zone is distributed in the upper part of a tunnel, damage such as tunnel collapse and excessive displacement may occur, and in order to prevent this in advance, countermeasures must be established through analysis of similar cases. Therefore, in this study, when a large-scale fault zone exists in the upper part of a tunnel, the relationship and characteristics of damage to the tunnel structure were analyzed.

Three processing strategies of seismic refraction data are tested in terms of velocity and depth profiles or structures for mapping of geological discontinuities: GRM(generalized reciprocal method), GLI(generalized linear inversion), Tomography. The test data used in this study are the shot gathers reconstructed by numerical modeling for the structures of 3 planar layers(horizontal, inclined), the buried vertical fracture zones, and vertical fault zones. Tomography is shown to be very efficient for mapping of more complicated tone such as vertical fault and buried fracture zones, whereas GRM and GLI can be useful for horizontal and/or inclined layers, probably on their bases of analysis of first arrivals in travel time curves.

In order to outline the kinematics and movement history of a new Quaternary fault, Jingwan Fault in Dangjin, West Korea, we analyzed the geometry of the fault zone composed of a few gouge zones, and made ESR dating for fault gouge materials. The $N55^{\circ}E$ striking Jingwan Fault is a normal fault and exhibits a gradual change in dip (gentle in the lower part, steep in the upper part), indicating a listric fault. As for the fault gouge zone, its thickness varies and reaches 2~3 cm in the lower part or between basement rocks, and 20~30 cm in the middle-upper part or between the basement and Quaternary deposit. It is observed in the latter case that more than three gouge zones develop with different colors, and branch out and re-merge, or they are partly superimposed, indicating different movement episodes. The cumulative displacement is estimated to be about 10 m using the geological cross-sections, from which it is inferred that the total length of fault may be about 2.5 km on the basis of the empirical relation between cumulative displacement and fault length. Therefore, a more study would be needed to verify the entire fault length. The results of ESR dating for three gouge samples at different spots along the fault yields ages of $651{\pm}47$, $649{\pm}96$, and $436{\pm}66ka$, indicating at least two movement episodes. Slickenlines observed on the fault planes indicate a pure dip slip (normal faulting), which suggests that the ENE-WSW trending Jingwan Fault was presumably moved under a NNW-SSE extensional environment.
Geophysical surveys(seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating radar) were performed to delineate the weathering zone associated with vadose water in Chojeong area and investigate the fault related fracture zones. On the basis of seismic velocity structures, weathering layer for the southwestern part is interpreted to be deeper than for the northeastern part. The depth to bedrock(i.e., thickness of weathered zone) from seismic refraction data attempted to be correlated with drill-core data and groundwater level. As for the investigation of geological discontinuities such as fault related fracture zone, seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating data are compositely employed in terms of velocity and resistivity structures for mapping of surface boundary of the discontinuities up to shallow depth. Surface boundaries of fracture zone are well indicated in seismic velocity and electrical resistivity structures. Accurate estimation of weathered zone and fracture zone can be successfully available for mapping of attitude of vadose water layer.

Array CSAMT surveys were conducted in two areas where it was not easy to identify the presence of faults only with geological survey because of thick overburden. The purpose of these surveys were to locate the faults and to delineate the deep resistivity structures around the faults. The steep dip lineaments having high contrast in resistivity laterally and the low resistive zones having some width in the resistivity sections were interpreted as faults and fracture zones associated with faults, respectively, The good applicability of array CSAMT to the investigation of fault was recognized owing to the agreement between the interpretation results of array CSAMT and the conclusive evidences collected by the following geological survey. The evidences includes the recent exposure of fault and the trajectory of fault evidences of the survey line. A comparison of the applicabilities of array CSAMT method and the resistivity method using dipole-dipole array was presented with the results of both methods along a same traverse line.
Gravimetric and magnetic surveys were conducted in order to reveal near-surface structures such as basements, faults, and fracture zones in an area near Angang, where the Yangsan fault is believed to pass through. Along two lines approximately perpendicular to the strike of the major fault, gravity and magnetic data were measured at 67 stations with a 15 m interval and at 296 stations with a 3 m interval, respectively. Average depth to the magnetic basement is estimated using the spectral analysis method to be 8.5 and 10.0 m along lines located to the east and the west of the Hyeongsan river, respectively. Average value of reduced gravity on the east line is higher than that on the west by the amount of 1.71 mGal, which indicates that the basement rocks are more severely fractured in the western part. Forward gravity modeling along the east line indicates that a fracture zone extends westward from a fault located 210 m west of the eastern end. Density and depth to the bottom of the fracture zone are estimated to be 2.44 g/cm3 and 70 m, respectively. The gravity model study also indicates presence of a small graben, 190 m wide and 3.5 m deep on an average, on the basement surface. The earth surface above the graben is approximately 44 cm lower than the nearby surface. This indicates that the graben might have been formed by recent fault movements.
Recently, the imaging of geological structures beneath water-covered areas has been in great demand because of numerous tunnel and bridge construction projects on river or lake sites. An electrical resistivity survey can be effective in such a situation because it provides a subsurface image of faults or weak zones beneath the water layer. Even though conventional resistivity surveys in water-covered areas, in which electrodes are installed on the water bottom, do give high-resolution subsurface images, much time and effort is required to install electrodes. Therefore, an easier and more convenient method is sought to find the strike direction of the main zones of weakness, especially for reconnaissance surveys. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of the streamer resistivity survey method, which uses electrodes in a streamer cable towed by ship or boat, for delineating a fault zone. We do this through numerical experiments with models of water-covered areas. We demonstrate that the fault zone can be imaged, not only by installing electrodes on the water bottom, but also by using floating electrodes, when the depth of water is less than twice the electrode spacing. In addition, we compare the signal-to-noise ratio and resolving power of four kinds of electrode arrays that can be adapted to the streamer resistivity method. Following this numerical study, we carried out both conventional and streamer resistivity surveys for the planned tunnel construction site located at the Han River in Seoul, Korea. To obtain high-resolution resistivity images we used the conventional method, and installed electrodes on the water bottom along the planned route of the tunnel beneath the river. Applying a two-dimensional inversion scheme to the measured data, we found three distinctive low-resistivity anomalies, which we interpreted as associated with fault zones. To determine the strike direction of these three fault zones, we used the quick and convenient streamer resistivity.

The fault can be defined, in a geological context, as a rupture plane showing a significant displacement generated in the case that the local tectonic stress exceeds a threshold of rupture along a particular plane in a rock mass. The hydrogeological properties of this fault can be varied with the spatial distribution and the connectivity of void spaces in a fault. When the formation of fault includes the process of the creation and the destruction of void spaces, a complex relation between the displacement along the fault and the variation of void spaces. In this study, the variation of flow with the geometrical characteristics of the fault is simulated and analyzed by using the three-dimensional discrete fracture network model. Three different geometrical characteristics of the faults are considered in this study: 1) simple hydraulic conductive plane, 2) damaged zone, and 3) relay structure of faults.
Hydrothermal gold deposits are evidence of intensive fluid flow through fault zones, and the resultant vein structures and textures reflect the fluid redistribution mechanism. This review introduces the suction pump and fault valve models as fluid circulation mechanisms causing hydrothermal gold deposits in the frameworks of the concepts of fault mechanics. The suction pump and fault valve models describe faulting-driven heterogeneous fluid flow and related vein formation mechanisms, accompanied by the cycles of (1) stress accumulation and fluid pressure build-up and (2) seismic rupture and stress/fluid pressure release. The models are available under different geological environments (stress conditions), and the vein structures and textures representing the mechanisms have similarities and differences. The suction pump and fault valve models must help better to interpret the origins of hydrothermal gold deposits in Korea and improve the efficiency of further exploration.
