This paper presents a case study on the construction of a long tunnel named as "Solan tunnel", which connects between Mt. Dongbaek station and Dokye station in the Youngdong Railroad. The tunnel will be the longest tunnel with length of 16.4 km in Korea when completed. The tunnel site is located in a complex geological region with faults, cavities and coal measures. In construction of adit No. 2, geophysical investigation methods such as electrical resistivity method and GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) were used to detect faults, cavities and coal measures in advance with some success. The geophysical investigation results and in-situ boring data were used as feedback to improve tunnel reinforcement design. Also, the tube umbrellas of grouted steel pipes were found to have a good reinforcement and grouting effects in zones of faults, cavities. In zones of coal measures, swellex rockbolts with mortar grouting were verified as successful.

Recently, tunnel technology in Korea has shown various achievements such as long tunnel and large section by tunnel construction using TBM in Korea and abroad. Especially subsea tunnels are frequently designed and constructed. The Ga-deok subsea tunnel was completed in December 2010, and the Incheon North Port Tunnel was opened and operated in 2017, and the Bo-ryeong subsea tunnel between Dae-cheon Port and Won-san Island will be completed in 2021. In foreign countries, many subsea tunnels have been constructed and operated in such as Norway and Japan. The main technical problem in the construction of subsea tunnel is to secure stability due to high water pressure conditions and large-scale seawater inflow in fault zones and weak zones. In this paper, various risk factors and solutions are described in the subsea tunnel planning of national road 77 construction work between Abhae and Hwawon.

The Cretaceous Kyongsang Basin is known to be composed of several tectonic blocks (or subbasins) with each distinct stratigraphic succession. The study area represents a major part of one of these blocks, i. e. the $\check{U}is\check{o}ng$ block. The area is charaterized by a suite of WNW-trending sinistral strike-slip faults as well as a number of ring faults. A total of 292 independently oriented core samples were drilled from 23 sites, covering virtually all the formations of the Cretaceous $Ky\check{o}ngsang$ Supergroup. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization experiments were conducted to reveal the primary magnetization. Due to the homoclinal nature of the strata in the area, it was not possible to make use of the conventional fold test It is, however, believed that the primary remanent components have been obtained from the majority of the formations, considering the similarity of the palaeomagnetic pole positions with those of contemporary strata of other blocks and the existence of antiparallel reversed remanence. It was found neither any significant difference in magnetic declination on each side of the strike-slip faults nor systematic change of magnetic declination with distance from the fault-line. This does not support such a block rotation hypothesis associated with the strike-slip faulting in the area as alleged by some authors. The samples from the outcrops on or near the fault-lines were severely overprinted by the recent magnetic fields regardless of age and lithology. Epithermal Au-Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn mineralizations are known along some fault lines in the area. It is interpreted that these two facts are closely related with fluid circulations along the fracture zones caused by fault activities. In regard to the age of the strata as deduced from the magnetostratigraphic consideration, the $Ch\check{o}mgok$ formation and the lower strata should be older than Barremian or 124 Ma. The age of volcanics of the $Yuch^{\prime}\check{o}n$ Group sampled in this study should be younger than Campanian or 83 Ma.
The study area, Bonggil-ri, Gyeongju, SE Korea, is composed of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, and Tertiary igneous rocks and dykes. A research on fracture developing history and density distribution was carried out on well exposed Tertiary granites. The fractures developed in this area have the following sequence; NW-SE trending duo-tile shear bands (set a), NNW-SSE trending extensional fractures (set d), WNW-ESE trending extensional or normal fractures (set b), NE-SW trending right-lateral fractures (set c), WNW-ESE trending reverse fault reactivated from normal faults (set e) and NW-SE trending left-lateral faults reactivated from shear bands (set a) under brittle condition. According to the result of fracture density analysis, the fracture density in this area depends on rock property rather than rock age, and also higher fracture density is observed around fault damage zones. However, this high fracture density may also be related to the cooling process associated with dyke intrusion as well as rock types and fault movement. Regardless of the reason of the high fracture density, high fracture density itself contributes to fluid flow and migration of chemical elements.
In order to map the acoustic basement and to locate fracture zones in the Galgok fault, seismic refraction data were acquired near the Chonbuk ranch in Gyeongju. Along three profiles of 72m(Line 1), 72m(Line 2), and 36m(Line 3) long, seismic signals were generated by a 5kg hammer. The refraction data were collected by employing twelve 8 Hz geophones at an interval of 3m and recording time of 192ms at a sampling rate of 0.2ms. The data are interpreted using GRM method. The top layer (Layer 1) is characterized as the velocity of approximately250 m/s and thickness of approximately 2.1m. This layer is regarded as a soil layer. Underneath Layer 1 lies unconsolidated layer (Layer 2) whose refraction velocity is determined to be $1,030{\sim}1,400m/s$. Layer 2 is approximately 4.6m thick and is regarded as a Quaternary gravel layer. The third layer (Layer 3) has the mean refraction velocity of $2,100{\sim}2,200m/s$ and is interpreted to be the acoustic basement. In some parts of Lines 1 and 3, the difference in depth to the top of Layer 2 is greater than 20 cm indicating the possibility of existence of Quaternary faults. Along Line 3 and the eastern part of Line 1, refracted energy from the acoustic basement was not recorded. This may highly indicate that a relatively large scale fault exists under the western part of Line 1.
Southwestern contact zone of the Boeun granodiorite occurs near the thrust fault between the Ogcheon Group and Majeonri Limestone Formation. Ogcheon Group, metasediments composed of the Munjuri Formation, Changri Formation, and unconformably overlying Hwanggangri Formation, belongs to greenschist facies of regional metamorphism accompanied with deformation of two fold axes, $N10^{\circ}E$ and $N45-65^{\circ}E$ directions. Basic metamorphic rocks occurring in the Changri and Limestone Formations are the meta-basalts and meta-diabases of tholeiitic basalt series. The meta-basalts intruded in the Changri Formation as sills, whereas the meta-diabases in the Changri and Limestone Formations as stocks in appearance. They are considered to have emplaced before the formation of two fold axes and related with the thrust fault, based on the geologic setting of the area. The metamorphic facies are identified to be greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-basalt, and epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-diabases. It is interpreted that such a variety of facies was related from the combination of earlier deuteric alteration and later regional metamorphism. The metasediments in southwestern contact zont of the Boeun granodiorite which is a product of later syntectonic intrusion of middle Jurassic in age, show pyroxene-hornfels facies near the contact and amphibole-horenfels facies away from the contact to the mineral zoning in the contact metamorphic aureole of the Limestone Formation, based on the paragenetic analysis of mineral assemblages. The Limestone in the area appears to be considerably $SiO_2-CaO-MgO-CO_2-H_2O$ can be adopted to evaluate equilibrium conditions of the mineral assemblages in each mineral zone. It is revealed that a temperature gradient was existed accross the contact aureole ranging from the higher igneous side to lower sedimentary side, whereas no clear trend of $XCO_2$ variation appears but high mole fraction. The tremolite diopside-quartz-calcite assemblages occurs in common through the most mineral zones of contact aureole that is in good agreement with the equivalent reaction curve which extends over a wide range of $T-XCO_2$ conditions.
The northeastern part of Ogcheon zone which consisted mainly of Cambro-Ordovician arenaceous, argillaceous and calcareous formations and Carboni-Triassic arenaceous and argillaceous formations is delineated as the eastern mass of a thrust fault along Choongju-Moongyong-Cheongsan in the middle of the zone. The present study proposes a geotectonic line, Imgye-Samchog fault(see, figure 1) which divides the northeastern part into two blocks, Hambacksan block in the west and East coast block in the east. The igneous rocks in the Hambacksan block ranging from granite to gabbro are distributed in a symmetrical zones parallel to general direction of Ogcheon zone as follows (Fig. 2 and Table 2). Southeast igneous rock zone: it aligns Jurassic granites in its south and Precambrian leucocratic granites in its north. Central igneous rock zone: it aligns Cretaceous granites in its south and Jurassic granites, and some of diorite and gabbro in its north. Northwest igneous rock zone: aligns Jurassic granites in its south and huge batholithic granodiorite in its north. The distribution of the igneous rocks in the East coast block shows an entirely different features from those of Hanbacksan block. In the southern part of the block they assemble in a narrow area ranging in age from Early Proterozoic, through Middle to Late Proterozoic, Devonian, Jurassic, Cretaceous to Tertiary, whereas, the igneous rocks in the northern part of the block gathered to a restricted area, in ages of Middle Proterozoic and Cretaceous. The assemblage of the igneous rocks in the studied area shows a compositionally restricted, mixed S-type and I-type granites, $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ > 0.706, rare volcanics and shortening with upright folding. These lithologic and structural features suggest that the igneous activity in this part related intimately to Hercynotype Orogeny of Pitcher(1979). Chronological episodes of igneous activity from Early Proterozoic to Early Tertiary in the northeastern part are figured.
To extend our detailed knowledge for the Hwasan caldera, we carried out magnetotelluric (MT) survey, which is pretty sensitive to electrical property variation in both horizontal and vertical direction of subsurface, across the Hwasan caldera with the direction of EW. The 2-D inversion results of observed MT data lead to following conclusions. Firstly, the depth of the basin basement inferred by the MT inversion results matches well with that suggested by previous potential studies, but the basement resistivity seems fairly low when compared to that of general case. This feature might be related with the large-scaled, highly conductive layer beneath the Euisung Sub-basin suggested by the previous MT study. Secondly, the high resistivity zones reaching to 4000 $\Omega{\cdot}m$ are imaged around two external ring fault boundaries. These zones are thought of as the response of the rhyolitic dykes intruding along the ring fault, and in the previous gravity data correspond to relatively high density anomalies. Thirdly, low resistivity zone reaching to 200 $\Omega{\cdot}m$ is detected around a depth of 1km beneath the central part of the caldera, which has not been yet reported in korean geophysical literatures. If we take account of the evolution model of the Hwasan caldera, this zone is regarded as the past sedimentary layer that subsided during the period of forming external ring fault system. In addition, the relatively low density anomaly observed in the central part of the caldera may be attributed to this sedimentary layer.
The geologic structure of the Cheju volcanic island has been investigated by analyzing the gravity and magnetic data. Bouguer gravity map shows apparent circular low anomalies at the central volacanic edifice, and the maximum difference of the anomaly values on the island appears to be 30 mgal. The subsurface structure of the island is modeled by three-dimensional depth inversion of gravity data by assuming the model consists of a stacked grid of rectangular prisms of volcanic rocks bounded below by basement rocks. The gravity modeling reveals that the interface between upper volvanic rocks and underlying basement warps downward under Mt. Halla with the maximum depth of 5 km. Magnetic data involve aeromagnetic and surface magnetic survey data. Both magnetic anomaly maps show characteristic features which resemble the typical pattern of total magnetic anomalies caused by a magnetic body magnetized in the direction of the geomagnetic field in the middle latitude region, though details of two maps are somewhat different. The reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly maps reveal that main magnetic sources in the island are rift zones and the Halla volcanic edifice. The apparent magnetic boundaries inferred by the method of Cordell and Grauch (1985) are relatively well matched with known geologic boundaries such as that of Pyosunri basalt and Sihungri basalt which form the latest erupted masses. Inversion of aeromagnetic data was conducted with two variables: depth and susceptibility. The inversion results show high susceptibility bodies in rift zones along the long axis of the island, and at the central volcano. Depths to the basement are 1.5~3 km under the major axis, 1~1.5 km under the lava plateau and culminates at about 5 km under Mt. Halla. The prominent anomalies showing N-S trending appear in the eastern part of both gravity and magnetic maps. It is speculated that this trend may be associated with an undefined fault developed across the rift zones.
Gold contents with major and trace elements have been determined in 67 fresh igneous and altered wall rocks in the acid-sulfate alteration zone of the Ogmaesan-Seongsan pyrophyllite deposits in the Haenam area of the south-western part of Korean peninsula. The results are as follows; (1) Li contents have a tendency to show high value in dickite and altered rocks with dickite, while As, Mo and Sb contents have tendencies to show high values in alunite vein and silicified zone. F contents are higher in the altered rocks compared to fresh rocks. (2) Gold contents are enriched in alunite vein and silicified zone of the Seongsan deposit, but depleted in dickite and altered rock with dickite. Gold contents are especially concentrated in fault or conjunction area of two faults. (3) Gold contents are higher values in the mineral assemblages of alunite-quartz-pyrite and alteration zone of the Seongsan deposit among the studied deposits. (4) Gold contents in samples of silicified zones tend to show positive correlations with Ag, As, Co, Hg, Sb and V content, but negative correlations with Y and Zr contents, while on the other gold contents of silicified tuffs tend to show positive correlations with Hg and Sb contents. Therefore it is important to survey alunite vein and silicified zone at the conjunction of faults, and to analyze pathfinder elements such as Ag, As, Hg and Sb for geological and geochemical exploration of gold in the studied deposits.
