Proton Irradiation Effects on GaN-based devices

  • Along with the needs for feasibility in the field of space applications, interests in radiation-hardened electronics is growing rapidly. Gallium nitride (GaN)-based devices have been widely researched so far owing to superb radiation resistance. Among them, research on the most abundant protons in low earth orbit (LEO) is essential. In this paper, proton irradiation effects on parameter changes, degradation mechanism, and correlation with reliability of GaN-based devices are summarized.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as one of the promising candidate for next-generation field emitters because of their unique properties, such as high field enhancement factor, good mechanical strength, and excellent chemical stability. So far, a lot of researchers have been interested in field emission properties of CNT itself. However, it is necessary to study proper field emitter shapes, as well as the fundamental properties of CNTs, to apply CNTs to real devices. For example, specific applications, such as x-ray sources, e-beam sources, and microwave amplifiers, need to get a focused electron beam from the field emitters. If we use planar-typed CNT emitters, it will need several focal lenses to reduce a size of electron beam. On the other hand, the point-typed CNT emitters can be an effective way to get a focused electron beam using a simple technique. Here, we introduce a fabrication of CNT fibers with nanoscale point tips which can be used as a point-typed emitter. The emitter made by the CNT fibers showed very low turn-on electric field, high current density, and large enhancement factor. In addition, it showed stable emission current during long operation period. The high performance of CNT point emitter indicated the potential e-beam source candidate for the applications requiring small electron beam size.

An Investigation of the Control of Two-Spotted Spider Mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) Resistant to Organo-Phosphates (유기인제저항성 점박이응애(Tetranychus urticae Koch)에 관한 연구)

  • The study involved determination of resistance levels of spider mites ta argano-phosphates using topical application and slide dip techniques; laboratory serening tests of alternative acaricides using an O/P resistant strain and a field trial of the screened materials. 1. Strains of Tetranychus were from Timaru(TR), Havelock Narth (HNR), Lincaln (LN). Germany (GR, GN). Comparisons of the resistant strains and normal strains at the LD50 and LC50 levels were as follows : (a) Using the topical application tochnique; with Parathian. resistant levels of the GR. TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were respeativuly, 1035. 484 and 452 times as resistant' as the LN strain. (b) Using the slide dip technique; with Phosdrin, resistant of GR, TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were 635, 274 and 266 times greater respeativuly, than the GN strain. 2. The laboratory sereaning tests were carried out far their contact plus stomach and residual effect to assess the toxicities of eleven alternative materials which would be used far control of O/P resistant strain of T. urticae. The acaricide groups represented were 3 organo-chlorines (Spidex, Kelthane and C 8514), 2 nitrophenyls (UC 19786 and Morocide), 2 cyclic carbonates(Eradex and Morestan). I carbamate (UC2004 7A), 1 mixture of carbamate and orano-chlorine and 2 other chemicals (C 8677 and M2527). From all acaricide tested. Kelthane and Morocide were the most effective, folowed by Spidex and M2527. Morestan, C8514. C8677 and RS 143 were intermediate, but Eradex, UC 19786 and UC 20046A were poor. 3, The number of sapmles required for estimation of the population in the field evaluation of acaricidal effects was one giving the highest practical precision. It was decided, after preliminary sampling trials. to use samples of 30 leaves per replicate which gave a $5.7\%$ standard error. 4. In the field trials, Morocide applied at the $0.05\%\;and\; 0.04\%$ a. i. conc. to black currant trees gave excellent control of O/P resistant population of T. urticae for about 12 days, but Morocide 0.025 and Kel thane $0.02\%$ a. i. cone. gave efficient control for about 6 days. In other words. first applications of Kel thane ane Moroeide gave very high degrees of control of O/P resistant population of the two-spotted spider mite. However, the results indicate that secondary application would sometimes be necessary. There was no foliage damage of black Currants and strawberries by either acaricides at the concentrations used.   • Two dimensional slow viscous flow around two counter-rotating equal cylinders is Investigated based on Stokes' approximation. An exact formal expression of the stream function is obtained by using the bipolar cylinder coordinates and Fourier series expansion. From the stream function obtained, the streamline patterns around the cylinders are shown and the pressure distribution In the flow field is determined. By Integrating the stress distribution on the cylinder, the force and the moment exerted on the cylinder are calculated. The flow rate through the gap between the two cylinders is determined as the distance between two cylinders vary. It Is also revealed that the velocity at the far field has finite non-zero value. Special attention is directed to the case of very small distances between two cylinders by way of the lubrication theory.

Prediction of seismic displacements in gravity retaining walls based on limit analysis approach

  • Calculating the displacements of retaining walls under seismic loads is a crucial part in optimum design of these structures and unfortunately the techniques based on active seismic pressure are not sufficient alone for an appropriate design of the wall. Using limit analysis concepts, the seismic displacements of retaining walls are studied in present research. In this regard, applying limit analysis method and upper bound theorem, a new procedure is proposed for calculating the yield acceleration, critical angle of failure wedge, and permanent displacements of retaining walls in seismic conditions for two failure mechanisms, namely sliding and sliding-rotational modes. Also, the effect of internal friction angle of soil, the friction angle between wall and soil, maximum acceleration of the earthquake and height of the wall all in the magnitude of seismic displacements has been investigated by the suggested method. Two sets of ground acceleration records related to near-field and far-field domains are employed in analyses and eventually the results obtained from the suggested method are compared with those from other techniques.

Rapid Heating Concepts in Sintering

  • Powder metallurgy applied rapid heating to sintering starting year 1900. Since 1970 the study has intensified. Now rapid sintering concepts embrace a spectrum of options ranging from dunk cycles to microwave, induction, exothermic, electric field, and spark approaches. Most of the efforts are targeting reduced microstructure coarsening during sintering, although reduced material decomposition is another common goal. The efforts are impressive for simple shapes and success metrics such a small grain size after densification. Several barriers need to be removed prior to application in powder metallurgy commercial sintering. Rapid heating research needs to focus on significant property gains, accurate product dimensions, and lower costs. So far each property gain obtained with rapid heating is matched by traditional sintering and composition changes. Several examples are cited to show the goals for the next round of innovations.

Earthquake Response Analysis for 2-D Fluid-Structure-Soil Systems (2차원 유체-구조뭍-지반계의 지진응답해석)

  • This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction systems. With this method, the fluid can be modeled by spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid elements which use rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and the near-field soil are discretized by the standard 2-D finite elements, while the unbounded far-field soil is represented by the dynamic infinite elements in the frequency domain. Since this method directly models the fluid-structure-soil interaction systems, it can be applied to the dynamic analysis of a 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. Finally, results of seismic analyses are presented for a spent fuel storage tank embedded in a layered half-space and a massive concrete dam on a layered half-space.

  • X-band Waveguide slot way antenna is developed for heliborne MTD radar applications. The antenna is composed of multi-layer waveguide structures. Each of them has it's own functions, such as, radiation, power/phase distribution, coupling, etc. Broad-wall offset slots are used for radiators, inclined slots on broad-wall for power distribution to radiating(branch) waveguide, some kind of coaxial probe structures for in-phase coupling and H-plane T-junction power dividers. Antenna is realized by precision machining and careful assembly. It is tested and measured by 3m${\times}$l.7m planar near-field probe, which is set-up in MTG. Far-field calculations have good agreement in tolerable bounds. Special but necessary process such as brazing, will increase the accuracy and performance. Results show promising possibilities of future applications for real systems.

The Effect of Induced Multipoles on the Fifth-order Raman Response

  • In our previous work we developed the Finite Field method in order to calculate the fifth-order Raman response. The method was applied to calculate various polarization components of the two-dimensional response of liquid $CS_2$. So far, all calculations relied on the dipole-induced dipole. Accurate time-dependent density functional theory calculations have shown that this model has big discrepancies, when molecules are close together as in the liquid. We now report results of investigations on the importance of multipole and electron overlap effects on the polarizability and the fifth-order Raman response. It is shown that these collision effects, especially the induced multipoles, are crucial in the description of the fifth-order response. The impact is found to be especially pronounced for the χ_{mmzzzz}^{(5)}$response that is solely due to interaction induced effects. The calculated response will be compared with various experimental results.
