Test models which have geometrical similarities with a real room air conditioner (RAC) have been manufactured including visualization windows so that a laser beam can pass through a cross flow fan. Then, flow distributions of the RAC have been investigated using a visualization technique such as a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to analyze an efficiency and noise of the RAC. Pitot tubes have also been used to measure the flow velocity inside the RAC with various positions to confirm the measurement accuracy of the PIV technique. The measured flow velocities have been analyzed and new designs of the RAC have been proposed to improve the efficiency and to reduce the noise for the RAC in this study.

Fuel rods using in nuclear power plants consist of uranium dioxide pellets enclosed in zirconium alloy(zircaloy) tubes. It is vitally important for the pellet surface to remain free from pits, cracks and chipping defects after it is loaded into the tubes to prevent local hot spots during reactor operation. This paper investigates the feasibility study for detecting surface flaws of pellets contained within nuclear fuel rod through X-ray tomography simulation. Reconstructed images used by parallel and fan-beam filtered back projection method were presented and confirmed the accessibility between simulation data and MPS(missing pellet surface) image data.
This study aims at investigating the hysteretic performance of a novel composite wall panel fabricated by infilling aerated concrete blocks into a novel light-steel frame used for low-rise residential buildings. The novel light-steel frame is consisted of two thin-wall rectangular hollow section columns and a truss-beam assembled using patented U-shape connectors. Two bare light-steel frames and two composite wall panels have been tested to failure under horizontal cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves, lateral resistance and stiffness of four specimens have been investigated and analyzed. Based on the testing results, it is found that the masonry infill can significantly increase the lateral resistance and stiffness of the novel light-steel frame, about 2.3~3 and 21.2~31.5 times, respectively. Failure mode of the light-steel frame is local yielding of the column. For the composite wall panel, firstly, masonry infill is crushed, subsequently, local yielding may occur at the column if loading continues. Hysteretic curve of the composite wall panel obtained is not plump, implying a poor energy dissipation capacity. However, the light-steel frame of the composite wall panel can dissipate more energy after the masonry infill is crushed. Therefore, the composite wall panel has a much higher energy dissipation capacity compared to the bare light-steel frame.

Iterative reconstruction of CT takes a long time because projection and back-projection are alternatively repeated until taking a good image. To reduce the reconstruction time, we need a fast algorithm for calculating the projection which is a time-consuming step. In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm to calculate the line integral and the algorithm is approximately 10% faster than the well-known Siddon method (Jacobs version) and has a good image quality. Although the algorithm has been investigated for the case of parallel beams, it can be extended to the case of fan and cone beam geometries in the future.

A 1257-m-long irregular deep foundation pit located in the central of Nanjing, China was constructed using the combined full-width and half-width top-down method. Based on the long-term field monitoring data, this study analyzed the evolution characteristics of the vertical movement of the columns, internal force of the struts, and axial force of the structural beam and slab. The relevance of the three mentioned above and their relationship with the excavation process, structural system, and geological conditions were also investigated. The results showed that the column uplift was within the range of 0.08% to 0.22% of the excavation depth, and the embedded depth ratio of the diaphragm wall and the bottom heave affected significantly on the column uplift. The differential settlement between the column and diaphragm wall remained unchanged after the base slab was cast. The final settlement of the diaphragm wall was twice the column uplift. The internal force of the struts did not varied monotonically but was related to numerous factors such as the excavation depth, number of struts, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the dynamic force and deformation of the columns, beams, and slabs were analyzed to investigate the inherent relationship and variation patterns of the responses of different parts of the structure.
To investigate the mechanical behavior of the post-tensioned prestressed concrete lining (PPCL), the desilting tunnel of the Xiaolangdi Hydro Project in China is adopted as a case, and a detailed three-dimensional continuum model verified by the observation results is established for the PPCL. The radial stresses, longitudinal stresses, axial forces and bending moments of the PPCL under the completed cable tension condition (CCTC) and design water pressure condition (DWPC) are analyzed, respectively. The numerical results reveal that the PPCL concrete is significantly compressed in the circumferential direction by the prestress, while the prestress has a negligible influence on the radial stresses of the PPCL concrete. It should be noted that the concrete near the anchor slots has a complex and adverse stress state with stress concentration, longitudinal tensioning and large bending moment. In addition, a simplified shell model and a further simplified beam model which can take the influences of the prestress loss and the anchor slot into consideration are proposed for the PPCL. The results of the simplified models are in a good agreement with these of the three-dimensional continuum model, and they can be used as efficient approaches for the structural design and analysis of the PPCL.

In this paper, it is described about the tri-band mobile antenna system design to provide broadband multimedia and direct broadcasting services using goo-stationary Koreasat 3, simultaneously operated in Ka/K/Ku band. The radiating part of the antenna system with a fan beam characteristic in the elevation plane is composed of the quasi-offset dual shaped reflector and the tri-band feeder. The tri-band feeder is also composed of the Ka/K dual band feeder with the protruding dielectric rod, the circular polarizer, the ortho-mode transducer and the circular-polarized Ku band feed array. Especially, the Ka/K dual band circular polarizer was realized firstly using the comb-type structure. For fast satellite-tracking on the movement, the Ku band feed array has the structure of the $2{\times}2$ active phased array which can make electrical beams. And, the circular-polarized characteristic in the feed array was improved by $90^{\circ}$ rotating arrangement of four radiating elements polarized circularly by a $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler, respectively. Four beam forming channels to make electrical beams at Ku band are divided into the main beam channel and the tracking beam channel in the output, and noise temperature characteristics of each channel were analyzed on the basis of the contributions of internal sub_units. From the fabricated antenna system, the output power at $P_{1dBc}$ of Ka_Tx channel was measured more than 34.1 dBm and the measured noise figures of K/Ku_Rx channels were less than 2.4 dB and 1.5 dB, respectively, over the operating band. The radiation patterns with co- and cross-polarization in the tri-band were measured using a near-field measurement in the anechoic chamber. Especially, Ku radiation patterns were measured after correcting each initial phase of active channels with partial radiation patterns obtained from the independent excitation of each channel. The antenna gains measured in Ka/K/Ku band of the antenna system were more than 39.6 dBi, 37.5 dBi, 29.6 dBi, respectively. And, the antenna system showed good system performances such as Ka_Tx EIRP more than 43.7 dBW and K/Ku_Rx G/T more than 13.2 dB/K and 7.12 dB/K, respectively.
The treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion in adolescents is challenging. Maxillary protraction, particularly that using bone anchorage, has been proven to be an effective method for the stimulation of maxillary growth. However, the conventional procedure, which involves the surgical implantation of mini-plates, is traumatic and associated with a high risk. Three-dimensional (3D) digital technology offers the possibility of individualized treatment. Customized mini-plates can be designed according to the shape of the maxillary surface and the positions of the roots on cone-beam computed tomography scans; this reduces both the surgical risk and patient trauma. Here we report a case involving a 12-year-old adolescent girl with skeletal Class III malocclusion and midface deficiency that was treated in two phases. In phase 1, rapid maxillary expansion and protraction were performed using 3D-printed mini-plates for anchorage. The mini-plates exhibited better adaptation to the bone contour, and titanium screw implantation was safer because of the customized design. The orthopedic force applied to each mini-plate was approximately 400-500 g, and the plates remained stable during the maxillary protraction process, which exhibited efficacious orthopedic effects and significantly improved the facial profile and esthetics. In phase 2, fixed appliances were used for alignment and leveling of the maxillary and mandibular dentitions. The complete two-phase treatment lasted for 24 months. After 48 months of retention, the treatment outcomes remained stable.
Computed tomography system is widely used on various fields because section image of an object can be acquired. During several step to obtain section image, artifacts by many error factors can be added on the image. Ring artifact induced by the CT system is examined in this study. A test phantom of $512{\times}512$ size was constructed numerically, and the ring artifact was investigated by the algebraic reconstruction technique. The computer program was realized using Visual C++ under the fan beam geometry with projections of 720 and detector pixel of 1,280. The generation of ring artifact was verified by applying different detection efficiency on detector pixels. The ring intensity became large as increasing the ring value, and the ring artifacts were strongly emphasized near the center of the reconstructed image. The ring artifact may be eliminated by tracking the position of ring artifact on the reconstructed image and by calibrating the detector pixel.
Sparse view CT has been widely used to reduce radiation dose to patient in radiation therapy. In this work, we performed sinogram restoration from sparse sampling data by using inpainting method for simulation and experiment. Sinogram restoration was performed in accordance with sampling angle and restoration method, and their results were validated with root mean square error (RMSE) and image profiles. Simulation and experiment are designed to fan beam scan for various projection angles. Sparse data in sinogram were restored by using linear interpolation and inpainting method. Then, the restored sinogram was reconstructed with filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm. The results showed that RMSE and image profiles were depended on the projection angles and restoration method. Based on the simulation and experiment, we found that inpainting method could be improved for sinogram restoration in comparison to linear interpolation method for estimating RMSE and image profiles.
