  • We show that the minimum EOP (eye-opening penalty) obtained by tunable dispersion compensation is a function of a figure of merit for a nonlinear process, $I_0L_{eff}$, where $I_0$ is the optical intensity and $L_{eff}$ is the effective length of the interaction region. Using this rule, we do not need to conduct nonlinear simulations in all the cases of signal power and transmission length to obtain the signal distortion in dispersion-managed optical transmission. Instead, we need to conduct a simulation in only one case of a signal power and find the functional relation, and then we can obtain the values of the signal distortion in other cases using the discovered functional relation. This technique can reduce the number of nonlinear simulations to less than 10%.

  • High-quality transmission of $24{\times}40$ Gbps WDM signals obtained through controling residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in optical transmission links with zero net residual dispersion (NRD) of inline dispersion management (DM) of optical transmission links is researched. It is confirmed that RDPS values, which is improving system performance, depends on launch power of WDM channels, but optimal RDPS, which can simultaneously improve WDM signals with relative wide launch power ranges, becomes to be 210~230 ps/nm. Also, it is shown that effective launch power range that making eye opening penalty (EOP) of worst channel to below 1 dB is more increased as RDPS is more increased.

  • The compensation characteristics of WDM channels depending on residual dispersion per spans (RDPS) deviation in optical links with the randomly distributed RDPS for the adaptive configuration are investigated in this paper. Also, the link design rule related with RDPS deviations is proposed, from the viewpoint of the allowable net residual dispersion (NRD). It is confirmed that the effect of compensation for the distorted WDM channels is more increased as RDPS deviation is smaller. Also, it is confirmed that the decrease of the allowable NRD range for the exact eye opening penalty (EOP) is proportional to RDPS deviation. Therefore, the results of this research is expected to be the design reference for the flexible link configuration of long-haul optical transmission links.

  • Nonlinear effects and chromatic dispersion are the main causes of pulse degradation in high bit-rate WDM transmission systems and several architectures have been proposed to compensate them by means of optical phase conjugation. In this paper, a new method to exploit an optical phase conjugator (OPC) for nonlinearity and dispersion cancellation is disclosed. The proposed method is using optimal total dispersion of each fiber sections and it is simpler than those previously described in literature. Power penalty between WDM channels and the maximum launch power in $28{\times}40$ Gbps WDM transmission system designed by optimal total dispersion are more decreased and more increased than those in the conventional WDM transmission system with OPC, respectively. Furthermore, optimal total dispersion proposed in this research should provide the flexible design of WDM system, which less depends on OPC position.

  • Effective transmission distance depending on transmission capacity of WDM systems with inline dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugator (OPC) at middle of total transmission length is investigated. The range of net residual dispersion (NRD) resulting 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP) in 1 Tbps WDM system, in which NRD controlled by only postcompensation, is also investigated. It is confirmed that effective transmission distances are increasedto longer than several hundreds kilometers by applying optimal NRD depending on transmission capacity and distance. And it is confirmed that in 1 Tbps WDM system if NRD is determined to +17 ps/nm, the maximum transmission distance is achieved, and, especially, in long-haul 1 Tbps WDM system the effective NRD range will be determined within positive value.

  • In this paper, optimal position of optical phase conjugator (OPC) for best compensating distorted WDM channels due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) in $8{\times}40$ Gbps WDM systems is numerically investigated, and the eye opening penalty (EOP) and bit error rate (BER) characteristics of overall WDM channels at this position is investigated, comparing with that in case of OPC placed at mid-way of total transmission length. It is confirmed that the compensation extents in WDM system with OPC is more improved by the shifting OPC position from the mid-way of total transmission length, depending on the modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient. Ant it is confirmed that, from a viewpoint of the reception performance, EOP of each channel is more or less different with one another, but the BER characteristics of overall channels are almost equal.

  • In this paper, we investigated the method of compensation for optical pulse shape distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and SPM(self phase modulation) in a single mode fiber We selected MSSI(mid-span spectral inversion) as compensation method using OPC(optical phase conjugator). We used EOP(eye-opening penalty) parameter in order to evaluate the efficiency of waveform distortion compensation. In this paper, we induced optimum pump power level in optical phase conjugator through analytic method of computer simulation. And we investigated input signal power range being able to maintain stable reception performance under the condition of optimum pump power. We verified the possibility of high performance optical transmission system realization through the inducement and application of optimum pump power, input signal power and in-line amplifier spacing, because power control is important in the compensation for optical pulse distortion.

  • In this paper, we investigated the degree of compensation for optical pulse shape distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and SPM(self phase modulation) in high speed optical transmission system with dispersion shift fiber. We adopted the power symmetric MSSI(mid-span spectral inversion) as compensation method. We used EOP(eye-opening penalty) parameter in order to evaluate the compensation efficiency of distorted optical pulse. We evaluated input signal power range being able to maintain stable reception performance in the case of various chirp parameter of modulated optical pulse. And, in order to verify the applicable to wideband WDM system, we evaluated the wavelength range being able to maintain stable reception performance through the EOP calculation of various dispersion coefficient of first fiber D$\_$11/. We showed that proposed MSSI is effective compensation method to down chirped optical pulse transmission rather than up chirped optical pulse transmission in anomalous dispersion range. And we showed that this method have possibility of relative high power transmission and wideband transmission in WDM system.

  • We investigate an approximate analytic expression of signal distortion caused by the interaction between self-phase modulation (SPM) and dispersion in the dispersion-managed optical transmission where the dispersion is optimally compensated. From the analytic study, we obtain the analytic expression of the signal distortion in dispersion-managed optical transmission system. To confirm the validity of the analytic expression, we show that the eye-opening penalties calculated by the analytic expression correspond with the simulation results. Using the analytic result, we can easily estimate the signal distortion without complex nonlinear simulations.

  • The response of a single-mode fiber to a sinusoidally modulated input has been studied to see its utility in measuring system performance in the presence of fiber nonlinearities. The sinusoidally modulated signal models an alternating bit sequence of ones and zeros in on-off keying. The sinusoidal response of normally dispersive fiber shows a strong correlation with eye-opening penalty (EOP) over a wide range of the nonlinearity parameter N (0.1 < N$^2$< 100). This result implies that the measurement of the sinusoidal response can be an alternate way of measuring EOP without having a long sequence of randomly modulated input bits. But in the anomalous dispersion region, the sinusoidal response has a much more limited range of application to estimate system performance.
