The feeding effects of Rosa rugosa roots powder extracted with two different extracting solvents on lipid metabolism in rats were evaluated. Rats were fed with purified diets containing methanol or 70% aqueous acetone extracts at a 1% level for 4 weeks. In addition, to examine the effects of age, rats with different ages (4weeks old vs. 3 months old) were fed with purified diets containing methanol extracts at a 1% level for 4weeks. Feeding of methanol extracts decreased the concentration of triacylglycerol in serum and liver, whereas the aqueous acetone extracts lowered the concentration of liver triacylglycerol with concomitant elevation of the concentration of serum triacylglycerol. The methanol extracts ameliorated the degree of increase in the serum triacylglycerol level in relation to age and decreased especially the concentration of free fatty acid in serum of adult rats. The results suggested possibility that the regulatory mechanism responsible for triacylglycerol-lowering effects of Rosa rugosa roots extracts in the liver could be modulated by differences in the components of extracts due to the variation in extracting solvents, and that the methanol extracts might be effective in lowering an age-dependent increase in the concentration of serum and liver triacylglycerol in rats.
Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the influence of different extracting solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, or n-hexane) on the anti-inflammatory efficacy of Scutellaria baicalensis (Lamiaceae), which has been used widely as a traditional herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties. Methods: The ability of each extract to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF-$\alpha$, and $PGE_2$ by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells was measured. Results: The results showed that extraction solvents (except n-hexane) for S. baicalensis showed significant inhibitory effects on NO, TNF-$\alpha$ and $PGE_2$ production. Especially, methanol was the solvent with the greatest activity against NO and $PGE_2$ production. However, there was no difference between the extracts for inhibitory activity of TNF-$\alpha$. Conclusion: The present study suggests that methanol is a superior extraction solvent than water, ethanol, or n-hexane for maintaining the anti-inflammatory effects of S. baicalensis.

Metoclopramide reacts with ammonium cobaltothiocyanate to form a stable ion pair which has an absorption maximum of 625mm. The reaction product was insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. 1,2-Dichlorethane was the best extracting solvent among the several organic solvents tested. Metoclopramide can be determinded not only by visible light spectrophotometry but also indirectly by estimation of cobalt in the organic phase by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of 10$^{-4/}$-10$^{-3}$M by spectrophotometry and 10$^{-5}$-10$^{-4}$M by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The coefficient of variation by spectrophotometry was 0.9% and that of flameless atomic absorption was 1.8%. There was no interference with excipients, pH, temperature and reaction time. With this method, it is possible to determine accurately metoclopramide and tertiary amines in pharmaceutical preparations.
This study was carried out to investigate the biological activities of star anise extracts obtained from four different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol and chloroform) by measuring total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, DPPH radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, nitrite scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity. The methanol extract showed the highest extraction yield, followed by ethanol, water and chloroform. The properties of the extracting solvents significantly affected the total polyphenol content. Methanol extracts contained more total polyphenols than any other extracts. The highest DPPH radical scavenging activity was found in methanol extract. The hydroxyl radical and nitrite scavenging activity were highest in methanol and ethanol extracts. In antimicrobial activity, water extract showed stronger activities than methanol and ethanol extract against Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis, and no inhibitory effects on Gram negative bacteria were found in all extracts at the concentration used.
Pipethanate*HCl reacts with ammonium cobaltothiocyanate to form a stable ion pair which has an absorption maximum at 626nm. The reaction product was insoluble in water but freely soluble in most organic solvents. 1, 2-Dichloroethane was the best extracting solvent among the several organic solvents. Pipethanate*HCl can be determined not only by the spectrophotometry but also inderectly by estimation of cobalt in the organic phase by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}~4.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ by spectrophotometry and $1.5{\times}10^{-4}~4.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. With this method it was possible to determine pipethanate$\cdot$HCl in the pharmaceutical preparations.

The antioxidant activity of Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD was studied by partially purified culture extracts using various methods: ammonium sulfate precipitation, adsorption to Diaion HP-20 columns using polar solvents, and extraction using non-polar solvents. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picyrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of these partially purified fractions was then investigated. The precipitate isolated using 75%-saturated ammonium sulfate was shown to contain about 77.2% DPPH radical scavenging activity. Using the Diaion HP-20 resin adsorption method, the fraction obtained using 60% ethanol and 60% methanol possessed 76.7 and 89.5% DPPH radical scavenging activity, respectively. Fractions obtained by extracting with the non-polar solvents 80 mg/mL chloroform, 80 mg/mL n-hexane, 80 mg/mL ethyl acetate, and 80 mg/mL butanol contained 68.4, 75.0, 70.7, and 87.5% DPPH radical scavenging activity, respectively. Further study is needed to characterize the antioxidant substance(s) released by B. polyfermenticus SCD cultures.
To set up the outstanding and scientific dyeing method in making the condensed liquid of pigment obtained from onion skins and the improved reliability, the following basic experiments were performed. The pigment was extracted in the distilled water at $70^{\circ}C$ and methanol at room temperature and then it was analyzed with LC/MS/MS system (Liquid Chomatography/Mass Spectroscopy/Mass Spectroscophy, LIQ Advantage Max, Thermo Finnigan, USA) for its pigmental characteristics. The unrefined silk and refined silk were dyed by making use of the derived pigment in such a way. The chromameter (CR-200, Minolta, Japan) was used to measure the change in surface color in textiles to be dyed by the extracting condition and the color difference ${\Delta}E$ was determined according to the color difference formula CIE LAB through measuring the psychometric lightness L* and chromaticity coordinates a* and b*.
The analysis method of relative adsorption of disperse dyes on impregnated polyurethane resin and polyester fiber separately was investigated. The solvents for extracting the dyes from polyurethane resin and polyester fiber were determined by acetone and DMF, respectively. By extracting the dyed fibers with acetone at room temperature within 30 minutes, the dyes adsorbed only on the polyurethane resin could be extracted. And then by additional extracting the same fabrics with DMF at 95℃ for longer than 1 hour, the dyes adsorbed on polyester fabrics was extracted. This means that the dyes adsorbed on polyurethane and polyester could be extracted separately and that relative adsorption of the dyes on the both components could be analyzed quantitatively. Using this analysis method, the relative adsorption of a disperse dye was investigated after reduction clearing with various conditions.
