  • The matrix-type superconducting fault current limiter (MSFCL) consists of the trigger and current-limiting parts. The trigger part with reactors connected in parallel improves the quenching characteristics by applying the external magnetic field into the superconducting units. The current-limiting part with superconducting units connected in parallel and shunt reactors connected in series limit the fault current when the fault occurs. We developed the integrated reactor with the trigger and the current-limiting parts to apply high external magnetic field into the superconducting units. This was composed of a superconducting unit for the trigger part and two superconducting units for the current-limiting parts. We confirmed that the external magnetic field generated in the MSFCL with an integrated reactor was larger than that of the MSFCL with the separated reactors. So the differences of voltages generated between superconducting units were decreased in the difference according to the increment of the applied voltage. The whole magnitude of the SFCL was reduced because the volume of an integrated reactor could be reduced by one-third than that of the separated reactors. We confirmed that the critical behavior between the superconducting units in the MSFCL with an integrated reactor was more improved than that of the MSFCL with the separated reactors.

  • Internal & External duct acoustic fields are calculated by using a finite element method. The geometry is assumed as an axisymmetric duct. External acoustic field; outside the duct, and combined internal & external acoustic fields are solved. For both cases a far field's nonreflecting boundary condition is enforced by using a wave envelope element, which is a kind of finite element. First, a pulsating sphere and an oscillating sphere problem are calculated to verify the external problems, and the results are compared with exact solutions. When the wave envelope element is applied at the far boundary, the calculated finite element solutions show good agreements with the exact solutions. Secondly, the combined internal & external duct acoustic fields are calculated and visualized when monopole sources are distributed inside the duct. It is observed that the directivity of sound intensity outside the duct is beaming toward the axis for high frequency sources.

  • A formalism of reference language and homogeneous field is constructed for Iverson Language to organize a virtual file among external media. To execute some data manipulations among these external media files must be organized homogeneously forming multi-dimensional array like single media. This paper shows some organization of reference language to build the virtual file using many external media and some examples of program and hardware organization is presented for the justification of proposals.

  • A CICC type superconducting bus-line electrically connecting a superconducting magnet to a power supply is cooled down to low temperature under the external magnetic field during operation. The thermal contraction during the cooling may be constrained by the supports which are installed to protect the bus-line from Lorenz magnetic forces. This constrained contraction causes thermal stresses in the bus-line to release thermal contraction. The minimum stress conditions in the bus-line may be optimized by controlling the supporting arrangement considering the thermal contraction and the external field. The analytical method to find optimal supports arrangement was suggested by using the beam theory, and numerical calculation using commercial code was performed to verify the suggested analytical optimization method.

  • We have fabricated superconductor ceramics by chemical process. A high Tc superconductor with a nominal composition of $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ was prepared by the organic metal salts method. Experimental results suggest that the intermediate phase formed before the formation of the superconductor phase may be the most important factor. The relation between electromagnetic properties of Bi HTS and external applied magnetic field was studied. The electrical resistance of the superconductor was increased by the application of the external magnetic field. But the increase in the electrical resistance continues even after the removal of the magnetic field. The reason is as follows; the magnetic flux due to the external magnetic field penetrates through the superconductor and the penetrated magnetic flux is trapped after the removal of the magnetic flux.

  • Quench characteristics of HTS cable conductor due to external magnetic field were investigated. Firstly, the influence of critical characteristics of HTS tape on locally applied magnetic field was examined. Secondly, critical current of HTS tapes, which are wound on surface of former, were measured respectively, before the experiment for quench characteristics, Finally, 50mT and 100mT were applied to HTS cable conductor and quench characteristics were investigated through V-I curves. As the results, same as the result of HTS tape, HTS cable conductor showed strong dependence on external magnetic field with direction and magnitude.

  • Magnetization losses of HTS depend strongly on the orientation of external magnetic field because of anisotropy characteristics. For parallel and perpendicular magnetic field, analytical models to calculate the loss are well known but there is no analytical model for magetic fields which are applied to surface of HTS with arbitrary angle. In this paper, magnetization losses are measured for various incidence angles($15^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$) and compared with parallel and perpendicular loss. As a result, magnetization losses in HTS are strongly affected by perpenducular magnetic field component of external magnetic field.

  • The coercive field $H_{c}$ of amorphous Y-Fe alloys in the spin-glass state has been investigated. Foramorphous $Y_{10}Fe_{90}$ alloy, the thermal variations of $H_{c}$ in the maximum external field $H_{max}=300,\;600$ and 1 k Oe exhibit a maximum. Since spin-glass behavior is strongly affected by external magnetic fields, the maximum point moves to lower temperature with increasing $H_{max}$. The appearance of the maximum in $H_{c}$ has been discussed in terms of the change of the spin-glass state in the external magnetic field. When the value of $H_{max}$ is 55 kOe, the temperature dependence of $H_{c}$ has no maximum and shows an exponential decrease with increasing temperature. Similar trends have been observed over a wide concentration range. The concentration dependence of $H_{c}$ is associated with the magnetic phase diagram.
